This is supposed to be posted in my blog, but somehow got stuck in Above the Rim. So I am just posting the entry here.

If you thought there was a large student turnout at Halton Arena on Saturday night for the Charlotte-Clemson men’s basketball game, the ticket numbers back you up.
According to John George, the 49ers’ assistant athletic director for ticket operations, 4,373 student tickets were used for the game, a 71-70 Clemson victory. In 9,105-seat Halton Arena, there are 4,500 seats reserved for students.
Saturday’s mark was the largest student turnout since the homecoming game with Southern Mississippi in the 2004-05 season, for which all 4,500 student tickets were used. Since the 2001-02 season, student turnout has surpassed 4,000 just nine times, including Saturday.
Go niners students! The last time I remember Halton that full was when we played Indiana during the 2005-2006 season.
The Hoosiers beat us so bad most of the people there decided not to come back for a few years.
Really?
I don’t recall Halton being near that full for that game. In fact I think the Davidson and Xavier games last year were probably better crowds. Could be misremembering though.

nadda - Indiana had more fans than both those games.

student turnout or overall turnout?
I do recall Indiana having a good number of fans there but they always travel well and I was there and just don’t recall there being a crazy number of student fans as it was over winter break.
Perhaps I’m just forgetting because the crowd was pretty somber as we got blown out.
The Richmond game had the largest attendance of the season at Halton last year, and was our only sellout. Of course that’s tickets sold and not turnout, but that’s all you can go by really.
not sure records were kept back then but at the old coliseum on Independance, in Mullins 2nd year (?), the Wake game had a huge student turnout, not sure anyone has the student attendance for that one.
Records were kept then, it was the standard 11,666 Coliseum seating number but I doubt there is any record today of the student turnout.
Times have changed, back in the old days (1978-81) one of my duties was to drive down there and count the student ticket stubs from the regular ticket stubs to figure out how many were attending vs tickets given out.

Does scanning the tickets not give an accurate count of attendance?
I don’t know for a fact, but somehow I remember the number of 2,000 being used for student tickets during the Mullins era at the Old Cricket Bojangles Independence Arena Coliseum. I do remember several sellouts, including Wake and Muggsy Bogues. That would have left 9,166 for non-students.
Having been in 104 for the three games mentioned, I think Jersey is right on.
I agree, I wasn’t in 104 for all of those games, but this game definitely had the loudest moments as far as I can remember. The only time I can remember that could match recently (A10 days) was the double OT game vs. Davidson in 05-06.
