The 2016 Big Dance

CUSA didn’t kill basketball at Charlotte.

Rose, CHP, Major killed basketball at Charlotte.
Basketball was coughing up blood when Major got here. He just did not stop the trend (which was his job).
Our basketball program was diagnosed with a deadly disease the day all the good teams left C-USA 1.0 for the Big East. We were left out in the cold, just like Mike Tranghese told Judy back in 2000 that we would be, and our downward spiral started in March 2005. Alan Major was probably our Dr. Kevorkian.
I think Mr Bojangles pretty accurately summed up the sad reality that is 49ers men’s basketball.

As far as considering any possibility/future of the AAC, it likely starts with hosting home football games in a stadium larger than 15,300.

Since there appear to be no plans for football stadium expansion, I think the AAC talk can be put to rest

If they have plans, they aren’t sharing them.

But then we scheduled home games against in state foes that will draw very well.

Also, with a winning program, there is no excuse to not have a 12-15k season ticket base. It’s SIX GAMES a year.

Would love leadership that actually shared their goals and plans for the program. It is so weird seeing/hearing it at virtually every other school in the nation.

Yes but we should already have the plan out there. Judy has reactive mentality rather than proactive one, which is why we are already behind the 8-ball when it comes to the realignment world.

Look at USM, they put their name out there in the public for AAC expansion before anyone has even left. If Judy cared, we would be doing this too and we would of started football 15-20 years ago.

110% agree with this.

And if USM is publicly shot down? Judy and co. are behind the scenes types because they don’t believe that all publicity is good publicity. I’m not saying they are doing anything proactive, I can just understand their mentality about talking too much in public about stuff like this.

Agreed. You have to pick and choose what you put out in public, and while sometimes #stealthad is annoying, I don’t think actively campaigning for a conference publicly is a good idea either.

Then they are right back where they are in CUSA. Personally I look at as this may be the last chance to get into the AAC, give it your all.

Would LOVE to move up to the AAC, BUT what do we have to offer? Good academics, large enrollment, an international airport, 2 intersecting Interstate highways, and a GREAT market area. That’s it. Athletically, including us adds nothing to the AAC, and some may say takes them down a notch. Until our programs start winning (for God’s sake!), we have no leverage to move up. Facts.

The next shift will be the last major one under the existing collegiate dynamic. The basic underpinnings of amateurism, the existence/purview of the NCAA, and the like would have to change for any further upward moves. We’d better be ready and present our best case, instead of just taking 2 hour lunches and coasting for the next 5 years.

We have to be compared to the alternatives to fill spots in the AAC that are vacated by Cincy or whomever jumps to the Big 12.

I am confident that we can get to the top of CUSA on the basketball side, but I am not sure if we can elevate our football to the level we need to in order to warrant an AAC invite before the next change happens.

Who would we be competing with for that opportunity? I don’t think any Sun Belt teams can make a more compelling case than us? Maybe another CUSA team?

You’re right but Tulane got in, which means there is a possibility.

On a side note of the Women’s Big Dance, there is a story in the LOCAL paper about the Big 3 from the Triangle missing out on the Women’s Tourney, never mind that one of them, UNC-CH isn’t even eligible because of a losing record. No mention of the local team, UNC Charlotte, not getting a NCAA Women’s bid. Hmmm…

Tulane got in so the AAC schools can celebrate Mardi Gras. :o

Yes, basketball is at low point and is just downright upsetting in comparison to where it once was at. But look at every other sport. Going C-USA was a step-up in literally every other sport, just like bleedsgreenandgold said.

It’s not that we are in this pit we can’t get out of. I think it’s just the thought of where we could be that makes it seem worse than it is. We are in a top 20 market with 100,000+ alumni in the area, and we struggle mightily to get our brand out there. We had a high level basketball program at one point. Poor leadership derailed what could have been a very big time for us in the mid-2000’s.
I think this is the mindset of our AD’s office. We traded potential high level basketball for low level basketball and football, which is justified because our non-revenue sports can now compete at a higher level.
Judy stated on many occasions that she would not hurt basketball for the sake of football.
Sometimes you just have to say, what you have to say.
In my experience good leaders seldom get caught in situations that require that type of spin. That aside, the audience that statement was made to made me believe that she truly meant it. This was her reality until she had her Oprah ah haa / light bulb moment when Kansas was close to getting left out of the shuffle in conference realignment because of football dominance and she realized what her new reality really was. Unfortunately, it was too late and the train had left the station and was barreling down the track and in life and careers once you get left behind it is hard to catch up in the new world we all live in now.

To bad LR in D2 Sweet 16 isn’t on TV tonight. I’d like to see my parents’ alma mater play. They play Lincoln Memorial, & when they played in Dec. it was 123-122 in 4 OT’s. LR is coached by our former interim coach, Ryan Odom.

I wonder who gets a Div I head coaching job first (from today), Lutz or Odom?

11 seed Wichita State (9) now has a higher kenpom rating that 1 seed Oregon (10).

Crazy!
