The EV news thread 🔌

I believe he’s simply referring to SUV sales, of which the Telluride is currently the king. But you’re correct in that they’re targeting slightly different audiences. Having said that, I think there will be quite a few Scout owners, like the Bronco and Wrangler, who will never use the offroad benfits.

The newness of PHEV procedurally I think will still be cumbersome for some, and I don’t think that’s necessarily specific to the Scout. In other words, yes you’re going to be less dependent on electric range and network for availability of charging, but will it mean you’re going to have perform 2 tasks regularly, plug in and fill the tank. Yes, it will be nice to be able to strictly use gas while traveling, but since it will be a PHEV, the gas tank size is predicted to be in the 10-15 gallon range. For a vehicle of that weight, I can’t imagine the mpgs on gas alone will be great, so how often are you going to have to fill up on gas alone roadtrips.

clt says the bronco and scout will swim in the same off road waters. IFS up front makes it better for karen to drive on 485.

wrangler remains in another category with the unimog, the off road elite

  1. I was talking purely in terms of sales volume re: Telluride

  2. the gas engine on the Scout is a range extender. It is NOT connected to the drive train. It solely recharges the battery. The Scout will have ~150 miles of EV only range, which is going to cover probably 95%+ of most owners drives (occurrences not total miles).

I think that’s actually better on paper than Toyota PHEV system which gets about 40-45 miles of EV range. The only time you’re going to use the range extender engine is on long road trips. They anticipate it’s going to be so rare for many people that the vehicle will have a reminder system to burn the gas in the tank so that it doesn’t go bad.

That said, you will be able to choose from EV only or Hybrid mode when driving it. Jay Leno just did a long video including the only test drive I believe they’ve allowed because the one they have is preproduction.

clt says don’t forget the low profile mt tires

Going to give this thread a rest for a while.

for those that don’t know Xiaomi is a huge company in China. They had a pretty big presence in Europe too last I checked.

Initially that is the way I understood it as well. However, if you watch the Leno clip, the CEO says the driver will have settings they can choose for full electric, hybrid or full gas.

The gas engine still isn’t connected to the drivetrain. If you select that option youre running the vehicle directly off the recharge it is providing the battery. Basically, it’s zero stored energy mode.

clt says very demure

Well I don’t know about the rest of you. But the one thing I am excited about with the emergence of more EV’s is the idea that I can now consider buying a mini cooper without having to worry about shitty transmission issues popping up in the future.

I’m old enough to remember when a MINI Cooper was actually just that - mini!

May have been called just mini by many but the mini copper was part of models sold by BMC starting in the early 60s. They were a separate model with performance upgrades like enlarged displacement and discs, the current John cooper works editions of minis we see today are that legacy.

Curse me and my British car knowledge given to me by my dad.

Wanna know about a sunbeam alpine tiger? Haha
