The EV news thread 🔌

Using the Hummer in any comparison is a bit of a stretch. That thing is ridiculous. It has a battery twice the size of even the largest Tesla battery, yet somehow it gets less range. That vehicle is a joke.

Lol yeah can power a house for a week with that thing.

Just heard about this. Tesla quotes $22k for replacement battery. That would effectively turn them into disposable vehicles. Not sure how environmentally friendly a vehicle can be that costs that much to keep it running when it’s 12 years old. For reference, 12 years is the average age of the vehicles on our road. Average for ICE is end of life unless you want to pony up 20 grand for EV apparently.

This is an old story. It was a specific case anecdote and included the following:

As noted in the report, he was quoted $22,500 from Tesla, but ended up getting a repair for $5,000 from a third-party shop

This was a problem car not an end of battery life vehicle.

There are plenty of 1st generation Tesla model S sedans still on the road, and they are over 10 years old now.

This is comparable to the lifespan of many other cars, especially luxury cars which actually depreciate far faster than Teslas do.

The interesting news of the day was actually from Elon Musk who threw his hat into the SSB ring saying something about how Tesla’s SSB was going to blow their new generation LiON batteries away. I actually don’t doubt that’s true. I just wonder how many years it’s going to be before he actually has it in the market (looking at you Cybertruck reservation holders).

My fiat with its ESC turned off could probably boil off the fronts. Even with it engaged you have to be careful on takeoff sometimes. I’ve often gunned it pulling out and had some spin. And the Fiat is no Tesla, not even close.

From what I understand, tires don’t last as long in general.

This is why PHEV should have been what we migrated to until battery tech got to where it needs to be. The world would have been better off with more Volts and RAV4 Prine types of vehicles.

100% agree. PHEVs for the masses.

It sounds like the $5,000 repair - about the cost of a new ICE motor - is only good for a year or two. The recommended course of action is full battery replacement that costs as much as a new entry level car.

This isnt some biased anti ev info. Here is more detail from an EV site:

I think what you’ll eventually see is reconditioning services pop up where they take your old battery and give you a trade in for it and netting the cost out from a new battery install.

The used packs can be reconditioned back into car batteries, grid power storage, golf cart batteries, and more.

Apparently the $22k batteries are refurbished. Itll be interesting to see if they can get the costs under control.

Where did you see this? I can’t find any mention of this anywhere. I don’t doubt that their battery team is working on a SSB deep down in their skunkworks lab somewhere, but for now they are going all-in in a massive way on their 4680’s.

With gas prices going up and up, I started doing some research into these electric cars, this thread is very informative, I didn’t realize how little the maintenance cost is. I’m sure they have break downs on yearly cost, it must be substantially lower than regular engine cars, if they can get the price down a little bit sales should go way up.

An electric vehicle maker considered — and then rejected — North Carolina for a $5 billion manufacturing plant, and public records show it likely came down to politics.

Rivian, an Amazon-backed company that in December confirmed plans for a 7,500-job facility near Atlanta, took North Carolina off the site list because a state bill it thought could pass was never brought forward.

While negotiating with the state over potential incentives, records obtained through a Freedom of Information request show Rivian, which is also backed by Ford Motor Co., was in contact with Wake County state Rep. Julie von Haefen on a measure that would allow certain automakers to sell directly to customers rather than through auto dealers — potentially leveling the playing field. Tesla had already negotiated the ability to have six direct sale centers in the state — that state law was passed in 2019. The new bill would have allowed Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) the same opportunity.

But it never materialized.

North Carolina is one of several states with restrictions on direct sales for automakers — it also bans direct auto servicing. Georgia lawmakers have introduced a bill to allow electric vehicle makers to have unlimited dealer locations. Like North Carolina, the state currently allows Tesla to have a limited number of locations.

I was calculating my costs per mile out so far a few days ago. With the public charger at my apartment, which has higher rates than if I were just charging at a house, I’m paying about 4 cents per mile. If I were charging at home, it would be about 2.5 cents per mile.

My house won’t be finished with construction for at least 6 months, but I’m having a 240v 50 amp charger installed.

It’s going to be 5 years before Rivian is any kind of factor in the market, best case scenario. It pretty much took Tesla 8-10 years to ramp up production to any reasonable levels
