The EV news thread šŸ”Œ

I agree. I think you need to move the tax out of gas to be honest and broadly charge usage fee similar to what you’re talking about.

Not new EV news, but this is what I plan on having for my next:

Convertible model planned for 2025 model year. The upper spec with 250 mile range would be just what I’d need for some trips up into the mountains.

They can (and I believe do) take odometer readings at annual inspections.

Seems like the most fair way to do it. If you make it a one time payment, it’s going to fuck a lot of people that are bad at managing money/planning for future expenses.

The alternative would be ev owners have to register with utilities and they get charged an additional fee for electricity use.

It’s gotta be something that is monthly at least. I mean even for people that manage well you could have a year of more driving than you expect to family illness or job relocation etc - and that bills get big in a hurry.

EVs also weigh on average 750 pounds more than ice so we are going to see a lot more wear on roads. Probably going to see a need of increased maintenance.

I’m shocked it’s only that much. My ioniq 5 is roughly the same size as my ford escape 4 wheel drive and it weighs literally a ton more.

That’s the stat I read. Maybe they are including hybrids as EVs.

I agree the weight will cause more wear and tear. Not that it offsets it, but the gas and oil drops also do their damage to pavement over time as well.

Now we are getting to a formula though… a mix of miles while also factoring in overall weight and number of wheels hitting the road.

How much does it cost to add a EV charger at home?

There will be charging taxes. Usage would be tough.

Level 2 is a couple of grand.

I bought my Level 2 charger for $350 and got the circuit added for it for $600. Just depends on where your breaker box is and where you need the charger.

As a motorcycle rider I’d welcome wheel number and weight as a factor usage tax

Taking mileage at annual inspection. Then dividing by 12 x the rate and then setting up a monthly payment plan seems like the only feasible option.

If they try to lay a surcharge on electricity in general people will riot.

If they install monitoring software in the vehicle people will riot and it will increase vehicle costs.

If they go on the honor system people will cheat.

I cannot think of any other way at this point.

Monthly payment plan is insane. It’s not going to be that much for most people.

Just bill them 1x or 2x a year at most. It’ll be like $150 -$200.

There is some kind of sick fascination in this country with monthly payment plans. We have all these highly combative people on so many issues who will willing sign up for monthly debt. It is really surprising to me.

Debt is slavery folks. It’s that simple.

Just to follow my napkin math up with some hard numbers, the average range of gas usage per year is round 500-600 gallons on most sites, and the NC gas tax was jacked up to 38.5 cents / gallon - which was up 2 cents from when I last checked it.

So call it 40 cents. 500 gallons. $200. Rough estimate.

Offer to split it in half. Setting up and monitoring a monthly payment plan will be so cost inefficient for such a small fee, it’s ridiculous.

Also, if you do this, you need to back it out of gas prices.

Which is what I think this is really about - removing the EV usage tax advantage. That will ensure gas engine cars stick around longer which is what the Oil companies and their fanboys want to happen.

This is govt I fully expect to get taxed twice. Plus it’s gonna have to increase to offset added weight and increased road wear. For comparison we are 38.5 Cali is 68 SC is 28

That cannot be allowed to happen either.

I’m having one installed during house construction. Since nothing has to be retrofitted, it’ll only be about $600.

In 5 years they are going to start being a ā€œstandard optionā€ for new home construction and eventually they will be universal
