The EV news thread šŸ”Œ

Why remove or lower the gas tax? There will still be a vast majority of ICE vehicles for decades.

Paying a usage tax for your EV to support the maintenance of roads is not debt.

A payment plan is debt. It is a yoke on your soul and existence.

It depends on what the payment plan is for. If it doesn’t carry interest and it’s not mandatory (as In this scenario you could not buy an EV and not have to pay the usage tax) by contract it’s not really debt. Is your power bill you pay every month debt? Is your water bill? Is your phone bill?

See the difference?

All major car manufacturers expect 40-50% of their sales to be electric by 2030. That’s an enormous decrease in gas tax revenue in a very short timeline.

If it’s based on the mileage driven you can shift ICE owners to paying that in a different way instead of pay the pump. This is just trying to find the best way for ICE and EV owners to pay for roads and maintenance. It isn’t the taking the tax away.

I’ll also say - depending on state, the payment could be big. In NC we already have to pay registration fee and the car tax(which should be illegal) so tacking on another 300 bucks to that could see those bills be 800-1000 dollars.

I’m in total agreement with the last two posts. If predictions for EV sales pan out (and they probably will because automakers can simply make less ICE vehicles, their price goes up and people are priced out (simplistic I know ) then we are in big trouble for road maintenance and we have to find an equitable method of apportioned cost of road maintenance to EV owners.

I’m a huge fan of road maintenance. Huge. Almost as much as the 49ers, lol.

Saw a Ford guy saying on camera that they could manufacture as many F150 lightnings as they wanted and people would buy them. It’s that good of a vehicle.

Was recently up in Detroit and in Dearborn there were rows and rows of them waiting for chips.

Pole to Pole: Nissan announces 17,000 mile trip from North to South in all-electric Ariya.

We need new battery chemistry (solid state preferred) comprised of more common, readily available elements.

The good news is that several companies are well into development of just such a thing.

An electric motorcycle is cool but honestly aside from easier maintenance I don’t see the point. There aren’t any performance advantages to them. They already get great MPG. Range is basically the same. I’d love to ride one though. The lack of gears is less an issue to me on bike.
