I need to know what the range is with a load kn the bed. Range with an empty bed doesnāt mean shit with a truck!
See the video above. He tows 7,600 lbs with the Rivian.
Alex on Autos does a really solid job. Very impartial auto reviewer and very thorough. I like him, and for reviews with really solid info, takes, and a bit of snark - savagegeese.
Iām hung up on the headlights. Just looks weird to me for some reason.
As much as I dislike EV cars Iād be perfectly fine with and EV truck. It just needs to be able to haul a heavy load or a wind disrupting load a long distance and be able to recharge relatively quickly. If Iām towing my camper I donāt want to add extend the trip too much.
I donāt do that work often with my truck but the point of having the truck is to be able to do those things when needed. If it canāt then whatās the point of having it?

I wouldnt buy any electric vehicle if you intend to do lots of highway miles.
They are primarily for short commuting or local heavy work loads.
I donāt understand why this is a debate still. EVs are not to the point where they are a perfect fit for the 10% of the populace that drives that way. They are being made for the 90% of the populace that rarely drives more than 50 miles a day, and studies show that the majority of those folks drive an average of 35 miles per day. If thatās you, and you have a place to home charge, get an EV. That includes something like that Rivian which can haul heavy ass loads, but not for 500 miles per charge.
If youāre going to be driving 100+ miles regularly, donāt get an EV. Maybe consider a hybrid or just get a regular ICE vehicle.
clt says RIVN is still a tease, back orders for days
I am just talking about the truck market specifically. You have some people that buy trucks and use them as cars never putting more than a load of crap to goodwill in the back. I think those people are dummies, but whatever. Those are the EV truck market.
Then you have a lot people like me that buy a truck because I might need to tow a motorcycle 500 miles or pull a trailer up a mountain, even if that makes up less than15% of the actual use of the truck. If it canāt handle that duty then its off the list of potentials. Like I said though I love the idea of a EV truck because it makes towing easier and the full loads easier. All the things I hate about an EV car are things I love about and EV truck.
$109k and up!
Definitely, but I think itās an interesting take. With electrics, trailers donāt have to be a leach on the car/truck like they are today. Hell, they can have their own drive system that communicates with the passenger vehicle so that they operate as one.
I think this is just a glimpse of what will become standard down the road.
The holy trinity of EV adoption:
- Affordability
- Reliability / build quality
- Range / charging (solid state batteries)
People still scream about infrastructure, but I do not believe it is nearly the issue people think it is once SSBs get perfected and we have 600 mile EVs that can charge on level 2 chargers overnight, or in 10 minutes at a fast charger.
That trailer is cool for all the reasons you said but it violates requirement #1.
Ev adoption is outpacing fast charger installation.
I used I never see stations full. Now itās pretty common to have 0 or 1 stall available on 10 stall stations.
There are also a lot of ev owners that donāt know anything about their own cars that make the process worse. Every time I see a Bolt owner plugged into a 150 or 350kw charger I want to slice their tires. The bolt is capped at 55kw charging speed, but these idiots think the bigger the charger speed number the faster their car charges.
I end up getting stuck going well under my top speed because dumb people are plugged into chargers that far exceed their vehicles capabilities.
I also bought a bolt recently to be a sales vehicle for my business. Itās a great around town car that you charge at home / the office, but itās a dreadful road trip car. I can do in under 15 minutes what it takes them an hour to do. I canāt believe how many out of state plates I see on bolts at charging stations. Their overall range and slow charge speed would make it an absolutely dreadful experience.
The point being that 600 Mile range SSB cars that charge in 10 minutes arenāt going to have to be charged for typical road trips, can be charged much quicker anyway, and can still be charged overnight at home. The SSB will lighten the load on quick chargers and reduce range anxiety.
