Between her and their hawk that kept flapping his arms (even during the National Anthem!) It was quite a show in the corner of the court…
I felt honored to have the Hawk in Halton… but no flapping should be allowed during the National Anthem.
Well, when I asked about the flapping, this is what St. Joes fan told me on their message board
The motto of the school is "The Hawk Will Never Die!" and has become the most defiant cheer in sports (as per 2001 SI article). With that, the Hawk, who is a student manager goes to every game and continually flaps his wings at all times the moment he or she steps on the court, never ceasing in a losing cause or in pre-game introductions or anything. Also, during every time out the Hawk does a figure 8, again done winning or losing.
I still don't think they should do it during the National Anthem...

We were talking about that very thing as pregame warmups finished up. Initially, I was surprised to think it would still be moving. But the more I thought about it, I can understand why the Hawk would continue moving. If you assume it is an animal, which I think is what they want you to believe, could you reasonably expect the animal to not move during the Anthem? In my opinion, a real animal would not be fully restricted during the Anthem.
Does this make sense? I dunno…I guess I’m just trying to rationalize why it did what it did.
Personally, I thought the Hawk was great. Not because of the costume (which was less impressive than I expected), but because of the identity it creates for the school and their athletics.
To the best of my knowledge, this was Coach Martelli’s 1st trip to Halton Arena. I wonder what kind of impresions he was left with…besides the obvious…“Damn, this school has one butt ugly main entrance sign to their campus” and “this place isn’t even half as loud as the Cintas Center or the Dayton Arena”.
In the second image of the gorgeous woman up top I thought her shirt said “Love Chili”… and then in the last one it almost looks as if it says “Love Jet Li”… then I realized it said what it really says, “Love Child”… I think the “Love Chili” is more appropriate.
