U-Times: Judy Interview

if pembroke can get a team i think 3 and 4 are done and done

No shit. When schools like that are starting up football, one has to wonder about our administration, and why they are so hell bent on NOT going forward here.

I just read the Judy Rose interview. It is no where near as optomistic as what is posted on here. I am very critical of it as I am with most things associated with this athletic department. But I really wish it was posted online so more alumni can read it. It may be very poorly written, as are most things with the University Times, but it seems like it was written word for word from a tape recorded interview. Parts of it are very hard to understand. Other parts trail off and are left incomplete. Overall, the interview is marginal at its very best.

The first question deals with the 49ers first year in the A-10. Judy herself tells alot about how unorganized and how behind the A-10 is compared to CUSA. The conference voted to do away with the Commissioners Cup because a points system could not be determined. How Charlotte had been operating similar to a BCS conference but the A-10 does not have this same “government structures.” Some important positions that were present in the CUSA such as an SWA or facuilty representatives no longer exist in the A-10. She is on the committee to determine the best way to schedule basketball games to get more teams in the NCAAs. YIKES!

I think we are a little later in the process of going through with planning than some other conferences, but its an evolutionary type thing.

The next question is about football. This is the most incoherent section. She asks herself:
“Do we need football to protect our basketball?”
“Is the A-10 going to be a major player in college basketball?”
“Will the day come that non-football schools that have basketball dont participate in the NCAA Tournament?”
“Will the big boys walk away from the table if they dont get their way and they got schools that dont have football they dont think they think theyre stepping up to the plate, will that occur?” She answers “I dont know.”

I dont hear that, but I have to keep that out there, if not I'm not doing my job as Athletic Director.

My job is not to sit behind this desk and just go raise money everyday. My job is to say OK, where do we need to be, what do we need to be looking at, like I was tried to do with the Big East during that time period, it didn’t work unfortunately.

But, having said that, but protection of what we worked very hard to develop here. Maybe protection means to stay where we are. We got to make sure we can do that. If it takes football to that, if we do an analysis and we find out ok, it looks like we’re going into this direction, we really need to add football, it’s not an easy thing to do.

I know what I personally think right now, it needs to be big boy football, 1A, and that means you have just don't jump to 1A, you have to go through some levels to get there and the reason I feel that way if we do football, again I'm not advocate for or against football, I'm an advocate of trying to study and seeing if we need to do it.

She then says the city would not support D1AA and that we would have trouble scheduling quality competition just as we do in basketball. Then she goes on about programs with football operate in the red and how Charlotte operates in the black and we do not fully fund our current scholarships, yada yada yada.

Then they give her some fluff questions: What was it like to participate on the NCAA selection committee? What is your greatest accomplishment as Athletic Director? And What is your ideal scenario for Charlotte 49er Athletics in 20 years? And this is where she says she would love to fully fund our scholarships including football if we have it.

I know ..uh..that I personally .. uhm. think right now, it needs to be big boy football, 1A, and that means ..er.. you have ..uh.. just don't jump to 1A, you have to go through some levels to get there and ...uhm.. the reason I feel that way if we do football, again I'm not advocate for or against football, I'm ..uh.. an advocate of trying to study and ..uhm.. LOOK OVER THERE!!! *runs away*

fixed.

I’d love to see the articles. Does someone have access to a scanner, perhaps?

anyone that wants to read the whole article… I can mail the paper to them/

here ya go

Thank you lutz9er!

here ya go

Underminer… ;)

It was not a bad article, but, the author needs to learn where to break paragraphs and put in punctuation, etc. There were numerous instances that Judy’s sentences were not broken up correctly and that made the flow really, really terrible.

Gotlutz used that article to our advantage today. very well done sir.

That sounds like some of the posts on this board.

I hope the author didn’t also confuse “your” and “you’re”, “there”, “they’re”, and “their”, etc…

I guess I’ll read the article to find out for myself.

That whole run down on the Pembroke college naming rights/sponsorship deal is something I think you guys need to include on your web site and in any presentations to the admin of UNCC. Make it “Charlotte Sponsorship Opportunities” with realistic “Charlotte” dollars and see how much it totals up to per year etc.

I think this is a good platform and you guys need to show HOW and WHERE the money will come from, looks like some of the hard work has already been done for you guys.

How much does all these “Sponsorship & Naming Rights” add up to? This isn’t Pembroke either, this is CHARLOTTE… You also got to remember any DONATIONS these Corp. spends, is tax deduc. on their part… Which is an advantage over Panthers/Bobcats/Checkers/ETC and would be MUCH cheaper.

This coming from a Business Owner in Charlotte (who has no association with UNCC, just like football).

Indeed. Stadium advertising, PA advertisements, possibly even stadium naming rights. It all adds up. Heck, isn’t Louisville’s stadium sponsored by Papa John’s?
