UNC Charlotte Campus Headlines šŸ“°

The board has to approve any new professional programs. Even if we lined up our own private funding source, it would still have to be approved by the board and probably legislators.

Yep, approval process is the BOT, then the BOG, and finally the NCGA.

Other than the UNC program, all these are small, private schools mostly from dying markets so the BOG has no control. Remember when Northeastern came into the market from
Boston and it was a big deal for like 2 minutes. Are they even here anymore?

I know not all lawyers end up being rich and powerful but attorneys often end up working in places that give them influence both in businesses along with politics. Having a law school at Charlotte would benefit us likely placing more grads in the legislature and counseling businesses.

Obviously DuBois was a stooge. Spend any time with Gaber though and you know she’s not just rolling over. Painful fact though is, as stated above, there are limits to what she and our BoT can do.

First, we should pursue a medical school over law in my opinion. Prior to the recent expansions, Charlotte was the largest city without a med school so there was clearly a need and frankly we are big enough and growing fast enough that a second GREEN option would be possible in the future.

Second, I get the frustration with that BLUE school but really people should not get the panties in a wad about other schools opening campuses here. That is a testament to the size of the city, industries here and future growth which for any of us that live here is a direct correlation to our local economic health.

Growth of the city is a good thing and helps the University too. We need to take a lead on some of these things in the future, but any major city is going to have multiple higher ed options in and around town to serve a diverse, complex work force.

I’m glad other schools have campuses in Charlotte. My youngest kid lives in Southend and is getting her Masters from WFU because they have a campus in town.

In a metro area of 2.5 million people you will have multiple higher education institutions but if there is a market need for an area of study why isn’t UNC Charlotte trying to fill that void? I want the university to grow in prominence and enhance the perception of my degree. Why shouldn’t UNC Charlotte attempt to attract the brightest people in the area over Wake Forest, Elon, or Chapel Hill?

I’m almost to retirement so I don’t have those concerns. I get your point and it’s valid but I’d rather my kid have a WFU MBA than from Charlotte.

My apologizes if that makes me seem like an ass but I’m being honest.

Why can’t it be both you’re an ass and also honest? Most honest people come off as asses to everybody anyway.

I don’t care that private schools are coming into the city. What I do care about is that the BOG sees a need AND has a major research school currently in the city and rather than leverage that school they push the mothership into the city. Thats bull shit.

Lol, touchƩ.

Don’t you love our Mother? Why would you not want our Mother living in our house?

I was pulling onto campus last week and was stopped by the light rail crossing. Nice to see one of the light rail cars pulling on to campus covered in a huge Elon advertisement.

The problem is, there is a demand for professional schools in Charlotte. In lieu of us filling the void via THE University of Charlotte, the system BOG would prefer a small school fill the void if not filled by Chapel Hill.

In other words, they do not want Charlotte to enhance our status and are determined for us to stay in a more complimentary role limiting our full potential. I have confidence in Gabber to succeed where he predecessors have failed.

Time will tell.

She is gonna fight the fight, but there is a limit to what she and our BoT can do. That is just reality.

Well, I think it is more about us; not the chancellor or leadersip by themselves. I am still baffled how a relatively small group was able to move the masses allowing us to finally get football. Imagine our school today without football.

Now, imagine our university ā€œwithā€ a medical school. We have had a hospital sitting on the edge of our campus for decades. A medical school has been a ā€œno brainerā€ for decades.

Charlotte submitted a request to start a med school many years ago. The UNC board responded there was not a need. The largest city in the nation without a med school, by far, andv there is no need. Really?

Then, secretly they began plans to extend UNC Chapel Hill’s med school into our front yard. Really? This was dirty.

Although we challenged, they told our leadership to"stand down." Really?

I went to Charlotte. I am proud of my school. However, if we are going to be ā€œweak kneed and passiveā€, eventually I will no longer care.

It’s time for someone, or a small group, to stand up and demand more. In many ways we have been successful in spite of ourselves. Imagine what we could accomplish with some strong effort. The sky is the limit!

The difference is besides the increase student fee we didn’t need much else at the BoG/GA level for football. The decision was ours to make. For any new programs like a med school that is a much much harder battle to fight. Not saying impossible, just that the players you need involved is going to be significant: it’s soooo much harder than football.
