UNC Charlotte student found dead on the Catawba River

Am I the only one that didn't know cars had this kind of "black box" technology?h

I was very surprised at this too. Since when have cars had black boxes? I’ve heard of them on planes, but never in cars.

I think its different than a plane, it don’t think it records audio. I think it is essentially the computer that tells your airbag to go off, tracks gas mileage and lets you know to put on a seat belt, but with memory that can be decoded. Mostly its for accident reconstruction.

I just didn’t know they could tell things like someone was in the driver’s seat at impact, seat belt was engaged at impact and that the car had been started at the scene.

Well, there are certain things that you can figure out just by looking at them. It wouldn’t be too difficult to tell if the seat belt was engaged at the time of impact. I too have never heard of black boxes in cars, although it’s not a bad idea at all. Just have it constantly recording, so that you always have the last 15-30 minutes or so of the car.

They didn’t say anything about someone in the passenger seat. I don’t think the technology monitors the rear seats. So there’s one of four possibilities. Someone purposely drove the car down the bank. Someone forced her to drive the car down the bank, probably from the back seat. Someone outside the car somehow induced her to drive down the bank. She drove down the bank accidentally (probably by far the least likely).

Has anyone seen any news about this lately? There have been no new developments reported in the media in the past couple months. The Department of Theater is having her brother come back to campus to speak, so I’ll post details of that when it is scheduled.

I’m just hoping I’ve missed something.

sad stuff to hear- thoughts go out to the family and those who knew her- hope to hear more information soon

I saw a brief mention a few weeks ago on the news but missed the story. Couldn’t find anything online afterwards either.

Nothing new to report really, no. At this point, it doesn’t look like the killer will be caught unless it’s his own doing (he admits it, he talks about it to the wrong person, etc.). It’s really, really sad, but it looks like it’s going to go unsolved.

Ira’s brother and mother will be on campus Tuesday at 5:00pm in the Belk Theater in Robinson Hall for all who are interested in coming. He will provide an update on the investigation.

They did not announce anything new, but Pavel (Ira’s brother) seems to think the police have someone in mind. Also, they set up IraYarmolenko.com with a forum for people to come together and talk.

Basically, he wanted to get this back into the media so that more people come forward with information.

I hope they catch whoever did this soon…

I bet these sickos thought they got away with it too. Good job, police.

If guilty, these dudes should no doubt go straight to Death Row.
