Unca roll call

Anyone coming to wnc to the game Sunday? Kimmel Arena is a nice facility and I’m looking forward to the game. Myself, my daughter , and big dan will be in section 1 row G behind our bench. Let me know who all is going and where everyone is sitting.

how much are tickets and whats the weather gonna be looking like up there?

Wife and I are going to spend some time with my dad and go to the game. I think he bought front row tickets at mid court.

16 bucks for reserved and 10 for general admission. Weather as of now will be 64 and sunny on Sunday.

I’ll be there, hitting Asheville Brewing before the game. Seems like the best option close to campus.

Asheville pizza and brewing company? If so, good beer and only a couple miles away. 5 minutes max.

I’m probably hitting Beir Garden

Yep, Ive never been out of all the times Ive been to Asheville.

the wife and I will be there! Sec 1 row D 8 & 9 8) Gonna watch the Panthers game at the hotel til about 2:15 then head to the game.

75% chance I’ll be there. I have 3 questions:

  1. Which brewpub is the best?
  2. Which brewpub is closest to the basketball arena?
  3. Are any brewpubs within walking distance to the arena?

  4. People seem to love Wicked Weed.
  5. LAB (Lexington Ave Brewing)
  6. not that I know of

All that being said I am no authority on Brew Pubs. I’m probably gonna hit Bier Garden

Wedge and Burial are my two favorites in Asheville. Greenman has really solid beer but I havent been to the brewery. Wicked Weed is solid but gets a lot of hype because of its location.

Whew! I knew OUR schedule said 3, the unca schedule said 3 and the WCCB broadcast schedule says 3.

Lexington ave Brewery is awesome! Great food and beer but a little pricey. I also really enjoy The Thirsty Monk (get the pretzels and cheese dip A-mazing!)

I don’t know that there are bars in walking distance or not but UNCA is on the north side of the city, 5 minute drive from downtown.

I, unfortunately will be working at Target (Xmas blackout) in Arden, a mere 20 minutes away and will not be able to attend. Kind of makes me sick seeing as how I was looking forward to this and would be in attendance if it was an evening game >:D

Watched UNCA vs USC tonight. USC won by 14. Was up by 20 at one point but for most of the second half only was up 8-12 before getting some space around the 8 minute mark. Few notes:

  • rowsey for them is a damn good shooter. Only needs minimal breathing room to get his shot off. Pull up, off screens, or fast break and this guy will shoot it. He’s a bit foul prone though and he dribbles at times for far too long. He’s maybe 6 feet tall but crafty going to the hoop. Chase him off the 3 pt line and attack him when he’s on defense and he can be had.

  • they have a few other shooters. 2 other guards have no issue shooting from deep. One, Robertson, hit 5 3’s in the second half. They have one big (abaru?) who can step out and hit the 3. They shot 15-29 from 3.

  • they really only have one big #45. He’s probably 6’10", long and lanky. He got a number of put backs and tip ins which could be issues since we suck at blocking out. Decent shot blocker. Not a heavy guy, so Thorne should be able to post him and work him over so long as they don’t double him.

  • there other bigs are shorter and pudgier. Clayton should be fairly comfortable.

Basically, if they’re not hitting 3’s they’re easily beatable. Their defense is very susceptible to drives and drives/kickouts. USC struggled with them initially bc they tried trading jump shots with them. Once they got it through their heads to drive they built a large lead. They also sucked at picking up shooters.

I often travel to Asheville for musical entertainment and I have a suggestion for anyone going to the game. Go Saturday afternoon or evening to spend the night and then go to Jack of the Wood (an Irish style Pub) in downtown Asheville on Patton Avenue. Every time that I’ve been there I’ve experienced great musical entertainment, food and beer (Green Man Ale). The musical cover charge is only $5 for really great music of all kinds. I have seen musical acts there for $5 which include Buddy Guy, Old Blind Dogs which is Prince Charles’ favorite band, the Cowsills, the original members of the Muddy Waters band minus Muddy of course, the remaining members of the Bill Monroe band (the band which Jerry Garcia’s wanted to leave the Grateful Dead to join as a permanent member but was turned down, however they did let him along with Bob Dylan play with them one night in Miami according to a couple of friends of mine in the band). If you don’t enjoy the music they will give your back but nobody ever wants their money back. Anywhere downtown is 5 minutes from the arena. Visit the pub and it will make your trip to the game feel secondary.
