UNC Charlotte changes police chief's title

March 15, 2007 09:16 EDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – A lack of credentials has prompted U-N-C Charlotte officials to rename the title of the school’s top cop from chief to director of Police and Public Safety.

W-B-T-V in Charlotte says the change came after the station questioned the credentials of Marlene Hall. She’s not a sworn officer in North Carolina and can’t legally be called a police chief.

A campus spokeswoman says Hall doesn’t have to be a sworn officer to hold the director’s title.

U-N-C-Charlotte says Hall will enroll in classes to be certified as a chief in North Carolina.

I sort of feel bad for her.
