Entertainment complex planned near campus including a brewery.

Has the site been cleared for grave sites yet? A lot of old graves have been found in the UC area since it started being developed. There are graves near CMS, CMC, all over out there. A lot of slaves and indigent folks laid to rest out that way, away from the city.

I would not consider it that close to campus. It’s near Ikea off of Univ. City. I think the land has mostly been cleared already.

Tryon is slowing going to become a great road with all the development… still a long way to go but seems a lot of investing going on. 1 question though where are all the less fortunate going to move to? Seems the city will be pricing all of them out soon. Hidden Valley may be making a comeback.

Northlake and Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road area is my guess since is still relatively affordable over there. This has been a big probably for the city for a while now NODA, Plaza-Midwood, Wesley Heights, Villa Heights, Wilmore…the list goes on and on.

I think gentrification is a good thing. More. More. More. I am not worried about having more affordable housing. Every month I realize I live in what seems like unaffordable housing and you should too.

They seem to be getting priced out of living near campus. I lived at The Edge this year and rent went in two years from around $470 a month to now for new residents $609 a month.

I’m not sure why gas stations, car dealerships, and an entertainment complex is being built right next to the light rail. Wouldn’t housing make more sense?

I think Top Golf makes a ton of sense there, its a spot with a lot of traffic and University City is dying for something for students to do during the weekends. But if they really want to capitalize on this land they need to add a couple bars to create a nightlife. A atmosphere students will want to be at so they dont have to go to uptown or NoDa, and a place that 49er fans can go to after a game. I thought i heard a few months ago that there was a plan to use the land for a top golf, rooftops bars, and a brewery.

Way too much retail space in University City that uselessly eats up land near the university that could be used for neighborhoods or office space.

One of the reasons our fan support isn’t better is because there aren’t nice neighborhoods adjacent to the university. It is difficult to make a midweek basketball game when most of your alumni base lives 20 to 30 miles away. Most of the university faculty and staff don’t live nearby either.

Also, instead of the university being surrounded by shuttered big box stores and old chain restaurants imagine having more land where research related businesses could build right next to the school and develop partnerships.

It will probably be 10 years before we experience South End type development near the University light rail station.

Longer, they keep approving non-transit and pedestrian -oriented development like automalls, storage places, retail that doesn’t face the sidewalk and has huge parking lots.
