UPCOMING CONCERTS IN CHARLOTTE-UPDATED!!!

[ul][li] And here’s an example or two of what I’d consider to be killer lyrics:
The Trapeze Swinger - Iron & Wine

Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention

But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry

And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city

So please, remember me mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"

And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior

But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"

And please, remember me seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger

So please, remember me finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

Between the Bars - Elliott Smith

Drink up, baby, stay up all night
The things you could do, you won’t but you might
The potential you’ll be that you’ll never see
The promises you’ll only make
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I’ll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you’ve been before that you don’t want around anymore
That push and shove and won’t bend to your will
I’ll keep them still
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I’ll kiss you again between the bars
Where I’m seeing you there with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time and I’ll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you’ve been before that you don’t want around anymore
That push and shove and won’t bend to your will
I’ll keep them still

My preference is better than your preference!

The Avett Brothers are alright, I just don’t consider them great lyricists. There is a little objectivity to that.

BTW< did I ever mention how long it takes that animation of yours to load? no doubt its funny, but guhhh… kills my little laptop.
They both are progressive rock/metal so I could see some similarites in that, but neither sound identical…at least I don’t think so. The cover of In Absentia though seems to almost be taken straight from Adam Jones’ (Tool’s guitar player) creation in this video-
Agreed.

BTW, reading a preview of PT’s Buffalo show and Buffalo News writer Jeff Miers has this to say:

The band might more accurately be seen in the same light as more menacing proginfluenced acts like Tool and Nine Inch Nails, both of whom have indulged in multisection song-stories and fully developed, often challenging musical ideas.

Buffalonews.com: Jeff Miers: Sound Check - April 30, 2010

FWIW, my nomination for dbag lead singers/front men - Scott Weiland and John McCrea.

Speaking of The Hold Steady… they are coming up on Letterman in a few minutes if anyone is still awake.

Thanks for the heads up in time for the DVR. Boy did Dave like them. I’m still getting used to their sound without all the over the top keyboards. Liked it quite a bit, especially on a repeat viewing.

No video link yet. Craig was smiling the whole performance. Think he’s really loving the band right now.

Lyric dickfight! Those songs you posted were not anything better or worse than the Avett Brothers, I’m sure they affect you more with the music.

Lyrics almost always look stupid just layed out like that imo. They just always seem like cheesy poetry. Really needs the music to tie it all together. Laundry Room is that way to me. Just a great great song.

I think really great lyrics hold up outside of the context of the song. But, a great song doesn’t usually have great lyrics. There are a few bands I listen to because their lyricist is so amazing, but generally I find at least one cringeworthy line in even my favorite songs.

Yeah, I’m sure it’s super cool to be dismissive of The Trapeze Swinger or anything Elliott Smith wrote, but saying that Avett Brothers song is even remotely in that league is absolutely ridiculous.

The other songs I posted weren’t intended to be great. They were just illustrative of the point that most of the songs on my random playlist are on par with Laundry Room, as you pointed out.

Avett Bros fans tickle me… there’s no denying the Jonas vibe there. They’re the alt.country Jonas Bros.

I’m not an Avett Brothers fan.

The songs you posted were all fine lyrics, yours were just more verbose than the AB song that was posted. I’m sure in the context of the music they are very powerful, especially for you.

No, they’re not more verbose. verbose is word count. The Trapeze Swinger is an absolutely amazing package of multi-layered metaphors. It is probably one of the most tightly packed pieces I’ve ever read.

And I’m sure you read Between the Bars at the superficial level in your rush to be dismissive.

Look, I know you’re desperate to make your point that all lyrics are subjective, but it’s just not true. Mary Had a Little Lamb is not a Bob Dylan song. Same principle applies here.

I get it, you think those are great lyrics. That’s what you think great lyrics are.

That Elliot Smith song is smothered in ambiguity. It works in songs, because there is music to give words context, but great lyrics (like great poetry) require descriptive and exact language. I love a lot of songs with similar lyrical quality and content, so it’s not like I’m saying it’s bad. But, it’s nothing earth shattering.

Eh, I’m not gonna get into a debate over who writes better lyrics than others. I rarely get hung up on the lyrics to begin with. I really enjoy a lot of the Avetts lyrics and think they are a terrific band. Laundry Room in particular.

This is my favorite performance of Laundry Room. I love NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts…

As for the Jonas Bro vibe…I don’t get it at all. Not at all. I guess you could pull a few press photos and try to make a random comparison based on the clothes they wore that day. I would imagine thats where any comparisons would end.

It’s not ambiguous, it’s very deliberate triple entendre. If it’s that easy to write, then rip off something original that’s as good. I can’t do it. It’s hard. And I’m hardly alone in thinking he’s one of the best songwriters of recent memory. There’s a reason he is revered in the industry and covered like crazy. You know, kinda like that Bob Dylan guy I mentioned.

Go to one of their shows. The girls in the audience do a good job passing themselves off as recent graduates from the Jonas fanclub. I’m sure they don’t mind the extra attention and money, but more than one of their female fans is into them cause they’re just so cute. Not saying that applies to you :stuck_out_tongue:

Isn’t Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the Jonas Brothers?

I havent noticed a lot of high school chicks at Avett concerts. I havent seen them since their new record came out either though so maybe thats changed. Not that it matters I think. I try not to get to caught up in what other types of people start to listen to particular bands. If certain girls listen to them just cause they think they are good looking then knock yourself out. Seems like a good problem to have imo.

Speaking of great lyrics…how about this one? Deep s***. The video to this garbage is amazing too.

If magic is all we’ve ever know
Then it’s easy to miss what really goes on
But I’ve seen miracles in every way
And I see miracles everyday
Oceans spanning beyond my sight
And a million stars way above em at night
We don’t have to be high to look in the sky
And know that’s a miracle opened wide
Look at the mountains, trees, the seven seas
And everything chilling underwater, please
Hot lava, snow, rain and fog
Long neck giraffes, and pet cats and dogs
And I’ve seen eighty-five thousand people
All in one room, together as equals
Pure magic is the birth of my kids
I’ve seen s*** that’ll shock your eyelids
The sun and the moon, and even Mars
The Milky Way and fing shooting stars
UFOs, a river flows
Plant a little seed and nature grows
Niagara falls and the pyramids
Everything you believed in as kids
f
ing rainbows after it rains
there’s enough miracles here to blow your brains
I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco bay
It tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away
And music is magic, pure and clean
You can feel it and hear it but it can’t be seen

Music is all magic
(Are you a believer in miracles)
You can’t even hold it
(Do you notice and recognize miracles)
it’s just there in the air
(Are you a believer in miracles)
Pure motherfucking magic Right?
This s***'ll blow your f***ing mind
(Do you notice and recognize miracles)

Music is a lot like love, it’s all a feeling
And it fills the room, from the floor to the ceiling

I see miracles all around me
Stop and look around, it’s all astounding
Water, fire, air and dirt
f***ing magnets, how do they work? ;D
And I don’t wanna talk to a scientist
Y’all motherfuckers lying, and getting me pissed

Solar eclipse, and vicious weather
Fifteen thousand Juggalos together
And I love my mom for giving me this
Time on this planet, taking nothing for granted
I seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly
Miracles ain’t nothing to lie
Shaggy’s little boys look just like Shaggy
And my little boy looks just like daddy
Miracles each and every where you look
And nobody has to stay where they put
This world is yours for you to explore
there’s nothing but miracles beyond your door
The Dark Carnival is your invitation
To witness that without explanation
Take a look at this fine creation
And enjoy it better with appreciation
Crows, ghosts, the midnight coast
The wonders of the world, mysteries the most
Just open your mind, and it ain’t no way
To ignore the miracles of every day

(Are you a believer in miracles)
Magic everywhere in this b****
(Do you notice and recognize miracles)
it’s all around you, you don’t even know it
(Are you a believer in miracles) s***'s crazy
(Do you notice and recognize miracles,
So many miracles, the magic miracles)

ICP? Hot shit.

You know who could turn a phrase? Tupac, that guy was golden.

LOL I like the part you bolded.

Last Avett Bros show I was at was loaded with 20 year old girls lusting after them. I think it jaded me. Kinda like Kings of Leon, though KoL has also sold out hard on their sound. e.g. Use Somebody… :gagging noises:

edit - holy crap I just watched the video for that ICP song… Why? Why???
