USC Gamecocks "Charlotte" billboard, I-77

Looks like they pulled this stunt back in October 2007 in Chapel Hill, too…

WEEKEND ITEMS - October 12, 2007

The Gamecock Nation is making an impact in the Old North State this weekend. Along with our football team, scores of Gamecock faithful will be making their way to Chapel Hill for the South Carolina - North Carolina battle for the border on Saturday afternoon. And welcoming them to Chapel Hill will be these billboards:

The billboards have been placed on I-77 south of exit 7, north bound and I-85 north bound.

Except South Carolina actually IS “Carolina” and was the first to be “Carolina.” This incident is just a slap in the face, tho I’m thinking it is actually an ad about some campus they are going to have in Charlotte opening Sept 3rd?
I’m pretty sure it’s just about them playing EZU in Charlotte on the 3rd. If anyone is interested, I think they are favored by 20.5 over the Pirates.

If only LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO coached football too.

This has nothing to do with our Athletics Department’s marketing efforts. This is an effort by another school, within the region, to market to their alumni and fanbase. It’s completely legit and a great idea.

Remember those billboards with the goalposts we put up? That was our school marketing to our city. I’m sure we will have new efforts in support of basketball coming soon and there continues to be good PR around football.

As for people not wanting to see other schools marketing in Charlotte, you might as well get over it. This is a big city with alumni from all over and for anyone wanting to market to a captive audience, I applaud their efforts, whether it’s South Carolina, UNC-CH, Tennessee or West Virginia.

Some of you guys are taking this way to seriously. They are playing a game in Charlotte. They used their logo to make a catchy sign that markets that game in Charlotte.

They’re not claiming our city. They didn’t put a “buy season tickets to USC football” or “come study at USC” sign. They put a sign that said "come help us fill the 73,000 seat stadium that currently only has 50,000 seats sold, and it would be great if you wore red when you did it!

Some of you must be incredibly bored or sensitive. Or both.

Quick show of hands. How many of you would love to see us put a billboard in another city?

We have nothing to be upset about. USC is just trying to promote their product and sell tickets.

I imagine some chapel hill fans are upset because USC used the name “CAROLINA”.

I have no problem with them executing this. Just wish the mindset for other schools would be “Don’t bother even trying to advertise in Charlotte. It belongs to the Niners.” That’s probably unrealistic given our geography and the number of grads of certain schools living in Charlotte because of that geography. Do wish we’d nut up and put up retaliatory signs though.

South Carolina was Carolina first? Really? The only thing I remember them being 1st on is USC.

Yes, we can’t stop them, but we could be pro-active to promote our brand in the City & region where other schools would think it was fruitless to put signs here.

It doesn’t bother me that U South Carolina is putting up billboards that read “Charlotte” in our town.

It bothers me that we don’t put up billboards that read “Charlotte” in our town.

We have for the last few years… you usually see the highest number of them near basketball season since its our “main” sport that draws. But I’ve seen soccer, among others around as well.

I know this because for a long time we didn’t, or at least they weren’t put in places that I noticed them, so I would get really excited when I saw them popping up along I85 and I77. Remember when Nick and the AD came out with the nike-esk ad’s a couple of years ago? I also have pictures of CLT advertising our “big-downtown” game versus UT last year uptown in the bus overhangs among other places.

Even with a flashy sign, a preseason #12 ranking, and defending their SEC East championship they still have only out sold us by 5k with 50k thousand tickets sold so far. That’s with ECU being 4 hours away and USC only 1.5 hours from Charlotte.

Approximately 50,000 tickets have been sold for the Sept.3 college football meeting between 12th-ranked South Carolina and East Carolina at Bank of America Stadium, and organizers do not anticipate a sellout.

It will be the first of two scheduled games between the programs in Charlotte, with a second set for 2014.

Ken Haines, president and CEO of Raycom Sports which is managing the game, said South Carolina has sold approximately 5,000 more tickets than East Carolina at this point. He said ticket sales are in line with expectations for the 7 p.m. game, which is not included in the season-ticket package at either school.

“We’re still expecting between 50,000 and 60,000 fans, though these early-season first games often have late ticket sales,” Haines said. “With South Carolina being ranked 12th in the preseason poll, that’s good, but that’s where we are with tickets.”

All tickets cost $60 regardless of their location. Haines said the struggling economy also is a factor, though he expects numbers to increase with nearly two weeks left before the game. Tickets recently were made available through TicketMaster.

“I’m not discouraged,” said Haines, whose company also puts on the Belk Bowl and is involved in the ACC championship game in Charlotte.
“If we can put between 50,000 and 60,000 people in the stadium for the first college football game and it’s not on either season-ticket package, I think that speaks well for us. It’s pretty much what we anticipated. We hope it will be even better.”

ECU vs Virginia Tech sold out a couple years ago, but 50-60k fans at 60 bucks a ticket is still pretty solid given the economy. Especially with 20k+ pirate fans most having to drive 4 hours and stay over night. That’s why the promoters keeps bring us back to Charlotte and they are paying us over a million to come.

Even with you constantly posting and trying to convince everyone that EZU is a legitimate national title contender in every sport it plays, I still don’t care. That’s with you trolling the board 4 times as much as other fans.

What do you guys expect. Raycom see’s a chance to make money and offers $3 million dollars to split between ECU and SC to come to Charlotte. It’s then our jobs to get our fans to buy the $60 dollar tickets so its a good showing and we will be brought back. I’m kind of surprised we haven’t put up a sign too. ECU and SC win but the city of Charlotte wins big time too financially especially off ECU fans most of which will not be driving back after a 7 pm kick off.

We are 3-1 in Bank of America Stadium with wins over NC State, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech and have 2 games vs South Carolina scheduled in Charlotte in the next 3 years. It’s been a good place for us and I expect we will be in Charlotte for one of these season opening showcase games every 2 or 3 years from here on out as successful as they have been for ECU, Raycom and the city.

You really are bored. You’re arguing with yourself. :)) :)) Nobody commented on ECU playing a football game in Charlotte. Nobody, on NNN, cares. I hope you have a good time in the “big” city.

I don’t mind USC advertising their team/game in Charlotte. I do mind this ECU douchebag going on and on and on and on and on about a school/team none of us give a damn about.

Yes. They were “Carolina” first. Does this upset you? It should only upset UNC fans.

I don’t give 2 shits about UNC-CH, Parman, BUT I’m a lifelong citizen of NC, so I think my Carolina is the best Carolina, even if I don’t like our flagship school.

As far as I’m concerned there are only 2 Carolinas in sports. The Panthers and the Hurricanes. But we still have no reason to get upset with USC placing a billboard add in our town.

Don’t you have better things to do right now than troll our board?

Hint: you’re gonna need a bucket.

I’m betting UNC Charlotte never even crossed USC’s mind when they were developing this billboard.

It doesnt’ really bother mie since it’s just promoting a football game. However, we all know our “marketing” dept is lacking.

I think some are missing the point. I don’t believe anybody is mad directly at USC. More disappointed that we don’t have that billboard, with the same type of marketing(Charlotte with the C pick as the C).

It’s a great billboard for that type of ad, because of it’s location. Because of the location, with the skyline in the background, it looks more like an official city sponsored billboard than it looks like an advertisement. Kind of like when you cross a state line and see a “Welcome to North Carolina” sign.
