I think some are missing the point. I don’t believe anybody is mad directly at USC. More disappointed that we don’t have that billboard, with the same type of marketing(Charlotte with the C pick as the C).
It’s a great billboard for that type of ad, because of it’s location. Because of the location, with the skyline in the background, it looks more like an official city sponsored billboard than it looks like an advertisement. Kind of like when you cross a state line and see a “Welcome to North Carolina” sign.
We have had these types of billboards and will do so again when we have something to market in early September. No reason to spend marketing $$ on basketball now…that typically doesn’t happen until Oct/Nov.
No offense man, but I would venture to say that ECU fans care a lot more about this game than USC fans… If I were to pick upward of 3-4 games to go to a year as a USC fan, driving to Charlotte to see ECU play wouldn’t be up there. Stay home and watch it on TV, then spend your 50, 70, or 100 bucks to see a home game against Auburn, Florida, or Clemson. I would honestly expect you guys would outsell them, even at 2.5 hours further away.

Yeah, we can sell out Halton (or a lot of tickets) against pretty much any ACC school but I doubt the GT, Clemson, etc fans get too excited when we come to town. It’s just the way it is.

What’s wrong with dreaming that we had the budget to make that billboard ours, 12 months out of the year?

Exactly. Local folks would of course come, but I’m not driving up from Clemson or Atlanta when I can see Duke or uncch play a home game in my arena for a similar price. This game, IMO, is more for ECU fans than USC fans.
This is the season opener of the most hyped S. Carolina team ever, in an NFL stadium they’ve never played in. Some talking heads are picking them to win the national championship and most everyone is picking them to return to the SEC championship game. What more motivation does a fanbase really need to see their team 1.5 hours away?
ECU on the other side is 20 point dogs. It would be very easy to just save the money and it’s a big statement to be taking 25k fans 4 hours away. S. Carolina has one of the best fanbases in the nation and we are more than holding our own.
ECU fans seem just as excited to be playing a good football team in Charlotte as they used to get when they would play a good basketball team in Halton Arena.
So, just for kicks and giggles, who are folks “rooting” for in the heated rivalry between the CockPirates? My brother, stepsister, and tons of folks back home down east are die hard ECU football fans so I’m going to go with South Carolina.
When the Gamecocks take on the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium, USC plans a veritable spirit assault on the Queen City, rallying its 8,000-person-strong alumni base to help the school get a spur-hold on the city.
Only 90 minutes from Columbia, Charlotte is a fertile ground for student recruitment and fundraising for USC, and the university hopes to expand on those successes.
“I don’t know if it’s the baseball championships or what,” Wolf said. "But it is hip, it is cool to apply to the University of South Carolina."
Whether i like it or not, this is how lots of people choose where to apply. Come on, football at Charlotte.
