Ways to improve attendance

Please, only positive suggestions in this thread.

Idea #1 — On gameday, sell tickets downtown in Founders Hall and the Wachovia Atrium

  1. Video board along 29 or 49 that shows highlights, gametimes, opponents, records, etc, etc. A very good marketing tool that is in place for Georgia Tech in Atlanta along I-75/85 and it reaches hundreds of thousands of commuters daily in both directions. Amounts to about 14 lanes of exposure.

  2. Some sort of local sports store that sells Niner gear and goodies. A place to give us a college town sort of feel in our own part of Charlotte.

  3. A SOAR Niner hoops orientation that is MANDATORY, so perhaps incoming freshman can see what kind of stuff is going on around campus.

  4. An sports talk station that actually promotes the program instead of trying to tear it down.

  5. Bring back the Bonfires on the front fields and promote them.

Great Thread, my $.02

(1) Provide 30 to 70 tickets to prospective students visiting campus.
(2) Increase marketing to client-oriented businesses as a viable (and relatively cheap) way to entertain clients.
(3) Allow tailgating before the game in certain parking areas.
(4) Increase the variety of Niner items on the market and sell them both inside and outside the SAC.
(5) (Far fetched) shuttle bus to and from the Triad.

There are 3 threads on this topic, can we put them all in 1.

Win something. Make it out of the first weekend. Top 25. People see those things and take notice.

  1. Something on campus to let everyone KNOW there is a game going on (home or away)…not just those little crappy picket signs that say “Game Today”

  2. Get players and coaches more visibly involved with campus and community activities.

  3. With the exception of the sure sell out games (which will be few and far between), allot a thousand or more tickets to be distributed to kids who could be future fans of the program. They are just going to go to waste anyways. They could arrange it to one of those “campus tour” field trips culminating in a big time basketball game.

  4. Have more special events before and after games, like rallies, bands or something that will draw people to the arena.

  5. What ever happened to the spotlights that used to shine on a game night?

  6. Why are we giving free tickets to fan of the game when a lot of times it’s someone in Gang Green? Nix that. Also, better promotions. How do they pick who shoots the 3-pointers? And can’t we get better prizes than free Jack In the Box sandwiches? Whoever is responsible for searching for sponsors has dropped the ball there.

  7. Get on the sports marketing department’s ass about all of this. They need to do a better job of outside promotion as well as getting fun stuff to see during the game. How about some TV spots advertising tickets?

  8. They should also make a story out of every game and promote it as such, not soap opera like, but everything game should have a story line, like last night, Eddie’s steal records and Curt’s 1,000th point. Obviously you don’t have that every night, but you can always find something, even if it is for the other team.

  9. Give students up to two free guest passes, then make them pay the $5 after that.

Thats it for now…just a brain storm.

Get the money the state owes us ($40,000,000 and $10,000,000 more each year).
Use it to get a radio station going to broadcast the games.
Live happily ever after.

Sell beer at the games

A sign or some sort of notification of gameday along 49/85 is a great idea.
Hell, just use some giant spot lights out in the parking deck.

I think Coach/the team needs to be more involved. Watching “The Season” with Wake Forest the other night, noticed that when they “rolled the quad”, Prosser and the team were there along with the fans. How many “Meet the Coach/players” events have we had this year? Any?

Best idea I can think of is to take the cheerleaders and dance squad downtown/around town on game day to promote the game. Especially in their respective outfits.

We definitely need to make sure EVERYONE knows how important the DePaul game is now. If you know someone that makes it to some games but not all games, make sure you tell them the importance of this game.

I really like Nova’s idea of selling the tickets downtown on game day. We can combine the ticket sales with promotional material. That would target potentially new fans too.

Maybe it’s also time to call the Observer & ask “someone of importance” if there will be any pre-game coverage of the BIG game against DePaul.

All of these are great ideas but I am not sure how likely ANY of them are. I have seen the team alittle more visible on campus this year and even saw one of the assistant coaches handing out tickets this year on campus. I think the key is just to keep winning and promoting the team. I would like to see us do something to celebrate after a big win so everyone knows. If it’s not rolling the trees in the front lawn or do something.

I don’t know if we can pull it off for DePaul, but we should attempt a Niner Nation cookout and advertise it on campus at one of the remaining campouts.

I actually like this idea of having a cook out before the game.

I think we could have 2 threads on this, "things that should be done"(what this thread seems to be about) and "things WE can do" (the thread that I started)...

By visible I mean having them get things done, not just a coach handing out tickets or the players being nice to people they meet. There are a lot of things that can be done. I mean fraternities and clubs do a lot of things on campus to get people interested in them. I’m talking something like Blah Blah Blah Event run by the Charlotte 49ers Basketball team, or a toy drive totally run by them. That goes for every sport, not just basketball.

Nationally, they are the face of this school so getting everyone on board with something like that and getting the campus community behind them would do a lot I think.

You don’t have to worry about me doing that. I’m quite angry about this. The state of NC manages its money worse than MC Hammer did.
