What is the level of success needed to extend Fearnes contract after the season?

Problem is it’s nearly impossible to recruit as an interim coach.

Everyone transfers now… hire someone in June, they can put together a team by October.

Flipping half your roster is the norm now so as long as we have coach hired by early April it’s fine. If he performs well in tournament we can sign him quick and he has time. The two months or so between now and then won’t make a big difference in high school recruiting as we kicked that can down the road putting interim title on him.

Sign the guy now. He was put in a hole in the beginning and is still there until he is signed. It is not all about Wins and losses this year. We all know the Talent Deficiencies.
It is more about the coaching ability and culture I see developing.
Totally surprised he got the guys to buy in and play like this.

There are always things behind the scenes, but unless Hill knows something detrimental he should not wait.
If we have some late year success, other teams will come calling.
Of course we want to finish strong, but I want Fearne thinking-planning about next year already.

Who is this ā€œbig hireā€ that people are waiting for, and what is he going to do better?

It is, but all but one of them were essentially Ron’s hires. If he is retained, he may want to make some changes.

I really want to see how the team prepares and looks for conference tournament before we lock him in. We have a unique opportunity to get a trial period before we buy. Might as well see the trial period all the way out.

Everyone wants to wait to see more games, but we are 2/3 of the way through the season so we are getting an idea of what he can or can’t do.

I agree. I can’t imagine if we signed him now or later it is going to make much difference with freshman recruiting. Look at our last 2 freshman classes. We have like 20 minutes of playing time out of both.

This program needs some stability and continuity badly. I think Fearne brings that

We’ve played 16 of 30 scheduled games. If we win at least one conference tourney game that’s 16 of 32. We are at the halfway mark. We were under. 500 overall just a couple of weeks ago. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Last couple of weeks of the season you have to re-recruit (is that a word?)your existing players.

It’s remarkable that we’ve played so well the past three games that this is a possibility. I’m in the wait and see crowd, we lay an egg at Rice and this conversation changes (not that I think we will).

I like the top 4, @ 100 NET as being the bar. It’s been fun watching us play since SMU but let’s see if that continues. The Stetson game is still too fresh in my memory for me to do otherwise.

If a brand new, ā€œbig splashā€ coach had inherited this team and produced the current results, y’all would be happy with the effort, grit and teamwork this team shows. We would also be looking forward to next year’s team and results.
It is obvious Fearne can coach and lead a team. Not sure what else he needs to prove to get the gig.
We don’t know behind the scenes what is going on but unless something is awry there, I don’t know why we would wait.
Screw around and we could lose him to another program and be back at square one wringing our hands hoping we can land a retread coach or an up and comer

He needs to prove he can recruit. Thats the most important part. Also, he has made more than a few in game mistakes and probably cost usbthe ucf and davidson games, so this narrative that hes already proven he can coach is not a good one

I totally agree if we finished where we are now. We also had a rocky start and it’s not impossible for this team to end up around. 500 and mid pack. No one is wishing for that, but we are only half a season in right now. I actually think we may continue to get better. If we finish where we are now or better, I think he’s earned it.

As for 55s point… No way we can allow him to prove he can recruit without a contract. That’s just not a reasonable expectation for him.

Fearne is on the right track to be retained, lets see how he finishes the season and go from there. Top four in the league with some action in the confrence tourney and I don’t see a reason for Hill to go shopping.

Can’t ā€œprove he can recruitā€ without a contract. Kids come because of coaches, and now money, not the name on the uniform (except for true big name teams)

Story book finish to the season… we finish top 4, announce Fearne has signed on, and we go win the damn conf tournament.

Unless we go on a run and make the tournament, and win games there, there is no shot of that happening. No team in a better conference than the aac is going to hire Fearne barring an absolutely miracle run and if we want him, we aren’t going to lose him to a team in a lower conference.

Look at other successful mid major coaches that didn’t get hired away after a year or two of moderate success. Just in states that border nc we have the longwood coach and Kelsey at CoC.

We are in a unique position where we don’t have to rush anything.

It by miracle we make the tournament and make some noise, we will be well positioned to hire a hot name anyway even if we lost Fearne.

I’ve enjoyed watching the last few games. I hope he keeps it going and earns the job.

Yeah there are guys who have turned around garbage programs and made the tourney that haven’t been hired away. We aren’t at any risk of losing Fearne yet. We will have a chance to lock him up if he earns it.
