What is the level of success needed to extend Fearnes contract after the season?

I believe Fearne can absolutely coach. I believe he is a good, no nonsense leader for the guys and he has high expectations and calls a spade a spade (with a colorful accent). I hope we continue to play like we have been and he gets the job.

Fearne may be the best thing Ron ever did at Charlotte!

I dont think it works like that

It doesn’t on paper because NIL is seperate from all that. He is correct in that money that could be going to Foundation and Building fund might go to NIL

Hey, heres a thought. Increase our donor base.

I talked to our AD and what they have said is the majority of NIL giving nationally is redirected giving from existing donors and sponsors that is simply redirected.

This fanbase and city has a nice long track record of wanting shit but not wanting to pay for it, even dating back to when we were winning. They say when we do X they will donate but then never do. So yeah I have zero faith in this fan base to step up and even less in the city.

Usually what it takes is people donating enough money to make a difference before the winning starts and they certainly hasn’t happened. I do want to believe if we win we bring in more money - I do. It should work like that. But i will believe when I see it.

We have been but need more

Fwiw, the alliance already raised over 250k so we will donate but need to win to significantly add to that

Right and my point is that most of the 250k is likely just money that was going to operating fund,
Scholarships or facilities campaign.

We can’t afford to do it all.

Nil has to cone first. Kids care more about getting paid than about facilities. Win, and you get increased revenue and you can use that for facilities

Again you hope for that. I’m not convinced out fanbase will do it though.

We also have to increase our operating budget by about 30% to get into mid aac territory. That’s a non negotiable. If we want to have a winning program that’s budget has to go up.

This past game seemed to draw in some Hornets fans based on what I saw on X/Twitter. If we could get the point across of ā€œyou can help build the teamā€ to the diehard local hornets fans, now is the time to get their money since the Hornets suck. Billboards or other ads throughout the city with a pic of Igor and DJ and a tagline ā€œBuild the ultimate franchise @ linkā€ (or something similar) could work wonders with NIL if it reaches the right crowd.

clt says biff can make things happen if needed

Only recruiting assistant Fearne needs is $$$$$

Lock Fearne up now. I’m convinced he’s the right guy. And money isn’t the problem, it’s just another company line excuse. Stop buying it, you’re smarter than that

I’m not quite there yet but if we ended the season where we are now, Top 4 in AAC, right around 100 in the NET, with what we had to work with it’s a win. I’ve been thinking, if we had hired a new coach instead of tagging an interim, I think almost anyone would consider those results a success. We finish out how things are going or better I think he’s probably the right choice. I honestly don’t trust Hill at all to hire anyone better.

This quote isn’t far from the truth.

Would rather have the money from one of the assistant roles available to spend on players, but I realize it ā€œdoesn’t work that wayā€.

Staff is full right?

We don’t have unlimited resources. In fact we have very limited ones. Is money the reason we have sucked so bad? Partly. We made bad hires and bad extensions that is the direct reason but given the financial constraints it has made the pool of candidates small and the ability to course correct hard. We couldnt meet salary to retain Alex Atkins, we couldn’t match money for Jahmir, we needed Biff to not take his full salary to fund assistants pool. Our baseball and softball coaches are here only because they want to be and are engaged - they have both been offered way more.

If we weren’t trying to build facilities and also increase operating budget by over 30% then I’d say money is less of an issue - but trying to do those things while also funding NILs for two sports and also adding sports. Yeah money is an issue. We just had to increase the student fee - again. Back in the day you could hire the right coach and hold onto talent to win and generate money, but now that talent isn’t going to stick around.

I know ya’ll harp on Mikes wins and losses records with coaches - but I am way way way more concerned with the fund raising side of his job. I had hoped they were sitting on some big new donors and sponsors - but that doesn’t appear to be the case. If we cant get the financial house in order then we need a new leader who can somehow find us some new money somewhere. We need an AD that can generate funds independent of wins and losses because the new reality is any success at our level will likely be temporary because we can’t retain talent or coaches.

There is no need to lock him up now. Need to see more from him and see who wlse is out there. Hes not a proven recruiter, which is the most important piece, plus witj the portal the way it is, we can afford to wait and if we hire a new coach he can fill out roster through portal.

I agree no reason to do anything right now, plus after the Rice game the schedule get’s tougher. I also want to see how we do in the conference tournament, if he can win even 1 game I agree give the guy a long term deal, but still to much basketball to be played.

I do agree with Central I don’t trust Mike Hill to hire anyone that much better though.
