Dink had fire on the bench yesterdayâŚloved it!
This is the most concerning statement in your whole point. We are all worried that our athletic director will not make a good choice, so if coach Fearne does ends up with a very mediocre record, letâs choose the devil we know.
I agree Fearne is getting a lot out of these kids, but .500 is not a good finish. The question should always be - who is the best coach we can get? Not whether our interim guy did good enough, but who is the absolute best candidate we can get here? Finding and selecting that person is one of the absolute most important parts of Mike Hillâs job. The decision should be made on that and that alone.
clt says haltron was loud yesterday, it stinks the students were not back yet
the students that were there were loud and cheeky
I donât know if Fearne will get the job or not but I do know;
We beat a legit top 25 team with a shit roster and down a starter and some of the worst officiating I have seen in a 4 minute sretch to start the 2nd half.
Kids play HARD for him even with the talent and limitations they have
He teaches an accountable , physcial and tough style of BB that will.pay dividends over the course of a season and one we have not seen in a long while
He is great in post game interviews and a really good spokesman for the University if you meet or interact with him
If this was his first year of a 4 year contract we would be ecstatic where we were heading with this roster
His recruiting is his main limitation and I put that on the Administration as much as Fearne or any Coach we hire.
I love some of the names people have thrown out but I have heard ânamesâ every hiring cycle. I am weighing Fearne against an unproven assistant from a P5 that I think we will end up with.
Hills next decision is crucial to where we want to go.
I may be wrong, but didnât Fearne bring in Aly Khalifa?
Depends on whether Hill has the balls to make a real offer to get a guy like this:

IMO, this should be the floor for the type of external candidate Hill should be looking to hire.
We should have hired him before Utah State did, and we probably wonât be able to pony up the money to get him now. He will get a big time job making millions.
Team also seems to play better when JT is not on the floor (not shocking). Itâs amazing what happens when all 5 players on the court are at least a threat to either shoot, score or create offense.

We did a really good job in last 10 mins of the game to get/keep the ball in the hands of our 2 best offensive players and scorers, that was great execution by our Coach & team.
What would be the real advantage to Sprinkle to move from Utah State in Mountain West to Charlotte in the American? He would probably be more interested in a P4 position versus an almost lateral move. We would come closer to getting Odom I would think.
At this point $$$. We are too late, but thatâs the kind of coach we should have hired several times over by now.
Got it. Thanks. I misunderstood your comment and I donât disagree. However, letâs see what he (Fearme) can do before we throw the baby out with the bath water. He might be like Ryan Odom. Odom was only 8-11 as our interim and look what he did with UMBC and Utah State.
This.
FWIW, I havenât changed my position about letting the season play out with Fearne. Thatâs a separate issue from what Mike is willing to do if the hire is put in his hands.
Sign Fearne now if he looks like our best option. Negotiate a fair separation agreement in case things donât work out. Gives incentive for him to produce and makes him more attractive to us as a candidate.
He has proven he can coach. Signing him now gives him a legitimate chance to recruit.
- hire the man
- wait until more games are complete
- ask lutz if he is interested
Seeing how he prepares the team for the conference tournament is important with regards to his continued time in the role. We shouldnât make any decision until after that. Id rather wait late and it cost us a bit more due to success than jump early and do the wrong thing.
Last night was great. Stetson wasnât. He needs to finish the season then make his case to Mike about his staff and recruiting plan. Something else we have not even considered - is does he even want the role. I mean I guess the default answer is of course he does. but not everyone wants to be the head guy.
Fearne bas been the lead recruiter on three guys.
- Risetto (dud)
- Aly (hit)
- Niagu (undetermined but not looking good)
My perspective is this. Unless Fearne has us in contention to win the AAC, run a coaching search as soon as the season is over. If we get interest from head coaches that have proven success and roster / proven recruiting ability they can bring with them ready to win fast, I think we HAVE to go that route. If we have a bunch of Ho hum suitors, give Fearne the opportunity to build his own staff and take over for 4 years.
I think we have said this with every coaching hire since Major, but I truly think this is the hire that can kill the basketball program if we screw it up again. Our loyal fans from the 70s are dying. Our big boosters have died/are very old in age. 5 generations of students havenât seen us in the tournament. We need to win immediately. No rebuilds. The portal sucks in a lot of ways, but it also can allow us to build a winner immediately with the right staff.
Maybe thatâs someone new (likely) or maybe thatâs just Fearne with a new staff. If itâs Fearne, we desperately need to find a strong recruiter and give them a competitive salary. Iâm not a believer in the current crop of assistants though. Itâs the first staff we have had since I started following that I had no idea who they were or what they are responsible for. Theyâre just invisible in the background and the names we have been in the mix for the last several recruiting cycles has been extremely disappointing.
No. Geez louise. We are 6-7 against d1 this season. That would be such a small time look. Let him prove he is the guy. We will have plenty of goid options at the end of the season he is definitely not our best option, nor has he proven he can coach wow, low expectations
FAU lost to Bryant University and Florida Gulf Coast this season, it was a solid win, but gambling the next 3-4 years on the body of work so far is an just impulsive ill-conceived nonsense
We landed the number one assistant (Sanchez) on the most dominate team in the country (Virginia) for the past few seasons at the time , it is hard for me to believe that there will not be an exciting pool of candidates in line ready to take this job if Fearne does not win the job
Settling for Fearne if he goes .500 is lowering the bar and accepting mediocrity
.510 ?
