Okay, I want to see people put themselves in Judy’s fro for a moment: If/when do you extend Bobby Lutz? What are you looking for? Keep in mind right now we are trying to recruit with other coaches using Bobby’s lack of a contract against us and we have 2, possibly 3 scholarships to fill. Bowden is already committed, but he hasn’t signed an LOI yet.
Level of difficulity: extending Bobby has to be an option for you.
After the first 10 games, if he has won 6… extend him.
For reference, the first 10 would be: HPU, ASU, GT, TBA (Winthrop/Chicago-Ill), TBA (Wichita State/Baylor), Wake, Davidson, Southern Ill., Hofstra, and Tulsa.
First of all…this is not Judy’s call. Its all on Phil D. That is scary because I think Dubois has not proven he is capable of anything in regards to athletics, football, name change, etc. His focus is on jock sniffing the UNC system/Erskine and the uptown train crowd.
keys to Lutz extension:
[]Janet Lutz needs to tone it down
[]we have play and appear more Hoosier-like instead of And-1 style
[]we need a OOC record above .500
[]we need to be top 5 A10 (even in a down year we should be top 5)

Bobby has to continue to sell the program to the public better/improve PR
edit- now that early signing is here, Lutz has the entire year to prove himself again (assuming they are not extending him by Nov 14). The next signing period for recruits is April after the Final 4 thru May. Whatever happens… extension/or not, happens in March/April IMHO just before next signing dates.
I am for extending lutz contract, with the right progress. He deserves that, based on what he has done, and the fact that we have some young guys. We will not get anyone more loyal and better than him for the money, fact. Also, I think lutz wants football.
Now what does it take?
I prefer elimination style…
step 1) We must beat High Point and App, otherwise we may as well have their coach.
step 2) We must win a game in the PJ tourney, that isn’t just the last game in the tourney.
Step 3) we cannot lose to Davidson by more than 9.
get to this point, negotiations start being made.
The Final Task) Of Southern Illinois, Hofstra, Tulsa, Gardner Webb, Fair-Dickinson, maryland, clemson, Temple, St. Joes.
We must win 5 games, and one of the 4 losses can’t be GW or FD.
I think a decision will be made either way by Jan. I like the idea of win 6 of 10, competitive in all games, playing good basketball. If that happens, get it done by conference play.

why Jan? I think its gotta be near the end of A10 play. He is already going thru this early signing period w/o a deal. Thats a big loss and gamble on Dubois’ part to only be holding back the extension for 10 ooc games. I think Dubois wants to see where we stand in the A10, there really is no difference between now and Jan. It also depends on who they think might want the job or be available next year for 300k/yr.

Because it needs to be done sooner rather than later. It hurts recruiting all year long, not just during signing period. Win some games, show improvement, be thankful, say the right things with the right attitude…and 10 games is all it should take to evaluate. I know he’ll be coaching his ass off, but of course I’ve always thought he did.

I agree partially with that. I just don’t know if Dubois is savvy enough to understand the recruiting side of it.
then again, they might have wanted Bobby all along and are extending him, just making him a little squirmy to get better results, which is a good mgmt tactic.

Agree with that, but not the rest.
Scoreboard-watching won’t tell you if a team is well-coached. If everyone functions as a unit on both ends - and if fans feel confident about the future of the program - then the coaching situation is sound.
I am not sure when to give the extension, but the first thing I am looking for is do we play like a team. The last couple of years we have been like anti-synergy–the whole has been less than the sum of the parts. If Coach can get this group to play up to their potential he is back on track in my book.
i agree with both of the last two posts. you play the season; but i have a feeling things will be clear well before march. this group may simply be too young to kick a$$ but they’re not too young to play as a team. and we’ll know that about half-way into the a-10 schedule.
Who said Dubois makes the call, and not Judy? Surely Judy has tremendous
influence in any decision. What an interesting conversation here where
we’re worried about losing to H. P., App. State, Davidson, etc. I yearn
for the return to the days when these type games were a given, and
we were trying to predict what our “seed” would be in the NCAA tourney.
I can only wish.
First: The decision process is not as logical as you may think. This is not here, but general college athletics and pro sports for that matter. The best logic is to make sure you have a alternate plan if you let someone go, especially someone whom has had a lot of success.
You would think people that make these decisions would have an alternate plan, but they don’t necessarily in most circumstances.
Case in point, the Falcons fire Dan Reeves and the Chargers fire their coach last year, what was their alternative, they did not have any. So look what happens.
My guess is probably under most circumstances, he gets another 2 or 3 years. Right now they should be focusing on football, leave the bball to the bball coach.
No need to talk about the extension until after the season. I wish an announcement saying he had one was released already. If you don’t sign them in the early signing period next week, they likely are not going to help you next season. The damage with recruiting has already been done. It’s now up to Bobby and the team. Dr. Phil is the one who has made this decision.
The above does not mean I want him gone. It was handled poorly last year and regardless of what happens this season, we will suffer due to it for the next several years, one way or the other.

HP,
I agree with you that regardless of what happens this season we will pay for it the year after next. We will have to reload with JUCO’s again, and that will ultimately hurt our overall growth.
I give Bobby big time respect for the schedule this year and for the recruiting job he has done for this year. I don’t think he has gotten enough credit for either.
Also, how different things would be right now if Phil and Anjuan had been eligible last year and if Dewhurst had not been hurt.
It is what it is.
Also, loses to HPU or APP will NOT ruin our season…with all the new pieces it will take time.
Our fans HAVE to be patient this year and not freak out if we are inconsistent and sloppy at times.
Metro, maybe I'm naive, but doesn't Lutz report to Judy, or am I missing something.
sort of…I guess in a direct organization chart kind of way. But Lutz makes more $$ than Dubois, I assure you this deal hinges at Dubois’ desk, not Ms Rose.
