True Hootie. Unfortunately it’s not the opposing teams’ low scores that sell tickets but the home team’s high score. I think that has something to do with it.
This is not the NBA, winning sells tickets in college basketball.
Actually, winning sells tickets at every level.
Winthrop is a good squad in a bad conference, they would beat us because they move the ball better and take smarter shots. I don’t think they have anywhere near the level of players we have, but that is irrelevant.
That said, no one knows what Gregg would be able to recruit given a better opportunity, so we can’t say what kind of team he would have were he to coach at a better school.
It is hard to say, though, that he hasn’t done a remarkable job with what he has. If he was at a school in even a decent mid-major conference, it is likely that a few less whistles get blown and they get the win.
We should play Winthrop every year at bubcats arena. It would be a good game, but we’d get beat sometimes and maybe THAT would help us be a better team.
As for the “so-and-so is afraid to play us” mentality: I used to yell this out every chance I got. I believed it. I believed we were good enough to beat anybody and we had the ATTITUDE needed to back it up. So, for YEARS I was right up front on that “so-and-so is afraid to play us” bandwagon, just swaggering and talkin’ trash up one side and down the other. GO NINERS!! WE’LL KICK YOUR ASS!!..especially all you All Chicken Conference teams!!
Well, some interesting things happened in the last few years:
- We could have made a HUGE statement by beating ncsu in the NCAAs recently. Had a BIG lead and frickin’ blew it and lost, looking like a mid-major in the process.
- Last year, had another chance to beat a Wake Forest team who was DOWN, for sure, but still acc, right? Well, we all know how that went… even with the great Curtis Withers on the team.
So here we are, no where near where we all want to be in our minds, but we had the opportunity to convince people, and we failed. So, I am NOT on the “so-and-so is afraid to play us” bandwagon any longer. I would be glad to get back on if we ever do anything to change my mind. (Hint: Losing to NT is not one of those things.) I do like to talk a bit of trash to the acc’ers, but not look like a FOOL when my team cannot back it up when given the few opportunities we are able to get.

I agree, I’d like to play them. They are building a good program over there. They are a lot better than St Bonaventure, Duquesne, LaSalle, Fordham or Richmond - and they have a brighter future!
Winthrop just won AT Mississippi State 74 -63. We play at Miss State Nov 29th and need to get even for last year’s loss.
Winthrop and Charlotte should both agree to play each other home-and-home or yearly at the Bobcat’s Arena with NO money changing sides except home game ticket revenue. Davidson and Winthrop are comparable programs stature-wise. We’re able to get it done yearly with them, but not Winthrop. I don’t think we’re entirely to blame though. I know Winthrop demands a lot for a guarantee game. But if someone knows why a home-and-home won’t work, I’d be curious to know the reason.
you know how much it would cost to play in Bobcats arena?
Bob Johnson charges an ass load…more than J-Lo’s …
this whole thread is a sad state of affairs.
10 years ago we were giants compared to Winthrop, now thier program has surpassed us

How do you know? Winthrop has never beaten us. Kinda sad that Oral Roberts has surpassed Kansas as well…who knew??? Will everyone quit jumping off the bus because of the North Texas loss?

For the love of God come in from the ledge why don’t you.
Winthrop has not surpassed us and it’s lunacy to try and say they have. We’re 2 FREAKIN GAMES INTO THE SEASON!! This constant bitching about how awful our program is combined with the 24/7 hummer you’re giving Marshall and Winthrop is pathetic. If you love them that much find one of their messageboards and have a nice big group hug. I promise you the program will make it without you.
We’re a young team with new players that need to gel. No we’re not as good as in past years but we sure as hell haven’t been surpassed by Winthrop.
this whole thread is a sad state of affairs. 10 years ago we were giants compared to Winthrop, now thier program has surpassed usYep. And anyone that thinks Wintrop doesn't have more talent than us is an idiot. DA is the only one that would start for them. I was surprised at the shot selection and number of threes they attempted against UNC. I can onlt assume their big men were tired from playing the night before or simply outmatched. Maybe Marshall loosened the reigns because of these things. They won't need to play that style in conference play. Neither do we.
For the love of God come in from the ledge why don't you.:rolleyes:You aint seen nothing yet BTO. Wait until next year when we lose DA. Ok, I have to ask… How do you know they have more talent than us? Are you a Winthrop fan? Maybe even a season ticket holder? Or did you base you opinion on one game you watched them play?
Since you just called many of us idiots, I think we are at least entitled to know how you concluded Winthrop has more talent?

I think winthrop’s team THIS year is one that could beat our “team”. Surpassing our program? Not til they beat a No.1 team to go to the Final Four will they surpass our “program”.
I’d just like to see us play a quality opponent home and home where we can drive to see both the games. Just like Davidson. We can bolster our tournament resume every year that Marshall keeps Winthrop in the state it’s in. There’s barriers keeping this from happening, so I’m just hoping both sides will work to eliminate the barriers to bring this area more high quality hoops. Nothing more, nothing less.

In 31 games last year Winthrop had 658 3pt attempts. In 31 games last year Charlotte took 716. That works out to about a 21 3pt attempts per game for Winthrop, 23 for Charlotte. Now you’ve made clear you don’t like the Niners shot selection yet we only attempted a whopping 2 more 3pt shots per game than Winthrop does. Do those 2 make that much of a difference to you? They shot 36% from 3pt land on the season, we shot 37%.
Now it’s true the other Greg Marshall is God crowd on here have argued they play defense and we don’t. Well last year their opponent’s FG% was 40% against the stifling Eagle defense while opponents shot 43% against the Niners. I guess that 3% makes all the difference huh. And let’s not forget it was against far lesser competition than the Niners faced.
Seems to me that you people on here who have crowned Winthrop better than us and Greg Marshall as God really don’t know much about their program.
I don’t think they have passed us as a program and I don’t think they ever will. They do have a better baseball and soccer program - but certainly not hoops. They might beat us this year but most years we would win.
More importantly, I would just like to see us have quality opponents on the schedule that are nearby. We could play home and home and that gives us one more game to go to that is in the area.

provider,
actually, looking at every preseason publication I see Winthrop in the dance and nobody picking Charlotte. One loss has nothing to do with my opinion. You are freakin high if you dont think 10 years ago we were not in the same league as Winthrop, but now I would wager every expert thinks their program is far more sound right now than ours.

we would lose by 40 to UNC
we would lose by 25 to Miss St

They play in the Big South genius, a one bid league that you have to win the tournament to get in from. Who else from there are they going to pick?
we would lose by 40 to UNC we would lose by 25 to Miss St
Well given your profound expertise and ability to examine every situation that doesn’t even occur I’m convinced.:tired:
