Yes, another music thread… but baseball and golf are over and we have 4 months until midnight madness. We have to fill the time with something, right?

So what bands or albums do you find yourself currently listening to a lot? Stuff that hasn’t worked it’s way into your favotite albums list yet. I’m always looking for new bands to check out and I like hearing what other people with similar music taste are listening to. Here are a few of mine:

 1. The White Stripes - Been around for a while, but I’ve only recently gotten into them. White Blood Cells, Elephant, and Get Behind Me Satan are all solid albums, but I think their newest one Icky Thump is their best yet. Highly recommended.

 2. The Fumes - An Australian band I only discovered about a week ago. They play a strange mix of blues and hard rock, but it seems to work. I really like what I’ve heard so far on their Guns of Gold album.

 3. The Derek Trucks Band - I first saw Trucks play when he was playing backup for Clapton last fall. This guy is incredible on the slide guitar. He is the nephew of Butch Trucks and also tours with the Allman Brothers. If you want to check out any of his solo stuff, get Songlines or Out of the Madness.

 4. Gov’t Mule - Another band that has been around for a while that I have only recently started listening to. Another blues/rock type band with some great guitar work by Warren Haynes. Check out Life Before Insanity or Deja Voodoo if you are interested.

 5. Chris Cornell - Unplugged in Sweden - I listened to some of his new solo album and I wasn’t crazy about it. I did like his stuff with Soundgarden and Audioslave. I think the unplugged album is actually a bootleg but it available online. It is just Chris and his guitar… he has an great voice and does excellent covers of Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, and Led Zeppelin. His version of Billie Jean is probably my favorite song on the album.

 6. The Black Keys - A lo-fi electric blues band. Similar to the White Stripes, but more bluesy. Check out Magic Potion or Thickfreakness.

In related news, I have some invites to oink (a very good torrent mp3 site). Send me a pm with your email address if you want one.

Chevelle’s latest
The Warped Tour 2007 Compilation (I know. I’m 36 and need to grow up)
My itunes mixes I’m listening to most is a “Best Post Grunge” with a lot of Bush, Foo Fighter’s etc.
I’m also listening to cheesy 90’s (ALT?) rock like Live, Sister Hazel, Everclear etc.

I tried a torrent one time, but didn’t like the results. I had the file for a full length album, but when I used the torrent (I guess) it showed that I was 100% complete, yet some songs were only 15 seconds or so of the entire song. Any recommendations?

Yeah, a lot of the public torrent sites fill up with garbage just like limewire and other p2p sites did. Some trackers also come with ratios where you have to upload a certain amount before it will let you finish your download (even if it says 99.9 or 100% finished). Oink is very good though… only quality stuff. They don’t even allow any mp3s below 192k.

I’m currently listening to…

 • Augustana… they’re kind of like The Fray, but I like their sound a little more.
 • Old U2… their stuff before Joshua Tree was quality. I just bought Boy and War, and they’re both great albums
 • my high school mix… Matchbox 20, Coldplay, Collective Soul, Wallflowers, etc.
 • I’ve gotten back into Counting Crows, especially their earlier stuff.

the last few cds that have cycled through my cd player are…

-G . Love and the special sauce - if you havnt listened to this you need to, kinda chill like jack johnson but it has some hiphop flair in it to keep you in a good mood

 • sublime because its that time of year
 • jimmy buffett for the same reason above
 • millencolin, pennywise, much the same, and other punk stuff…
 • some old audio adrenaline and dctalk just because i havnt listened to it in a number of years

stuff I have listened to the past week…

The Who- Endless Wire
Alice In Chains- Unplugged
Barrington Levy- Hear I come
Cold War Kids- Robbers and Cowards
The Ziggens- Ignore Amos
John Lennon- Shaved Fish
And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead- Source Tags and Codes
Arlo Guthrie- Hobo’s Lullaby
Downset- Do we speak a dead language
Mott The Hoople- All The Young Dudes
Pepper- No Shame
Laurie Berkner- Under a shady tree (my daughters favorite CD)

I recommend Last.fm. It has plugins for all major music players and records what you are listening to and then gives you charts and info every week. It also has an event management system and other cool features.

http://www.last.fm

also www.ruckus.com - free LEGAL music downloading for college studends - all you need is a valid school email adress (just like you needed for facebook before it went to highschools) - the update every week with the newest albums, and you can generally download anyone you want’s full lengths - for instance i think they had like 28 bob marley albums?’

if you havnt checked it out you need to - and im not sure but i would assume they will be making it (if they havnt already) available to everyone in the near future for all of you alums

Arlo Guthrie- Hobo’s Lullaby

He sings a song called the Motorcycle Song - I love it!
Laurie Berkner- Under a shady tree (my daughters favorite CD)
Time stops for my son when we put the DVD on. I think crack addicts have a less intense obsession that he has for those songs.

Thank you for sticking them in my head again. ARGH!

Within last week or two…

Jerry Jeff Walker - “Viva Luckenbach” and “Scamp”; hard to even classify Jerry Jeff but great song writer, guitar picker and story teller. Actually played on the UNCC campus back in the 70’s I believe. Nothing like cranking up some Jerry Jeff on a Friday afternoon after work with a cold beer.

Kevn Kinney - “Broken Hearts and Auto Parts”; nothing very similiar to his days in DnC. Much more bluesy with some elements of bluegrass. Awesome array of string instruments on this album…steel guitars, dobro, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, etc.

Pearl Jam - “Rearview Mirror (Disc 2)”; rarely a summer where I don’t go through a PJ phase. Both discs in that set are good but I’ve been more into their mellow cuts on disc 1 lately.

Brandi Carlile - “The Story”; I’m a sucker for a chick who can play a guitar and has great vocals. She has a very powerful and unique voice. I guess I’d put her under the label of “folk” but I think she falls under several genres. VH1 has been wearing out her title track but the rest of that album is great. Good Sunday morning or lazy day music.

Digging Spoon’s new LP hard. It’s not out yet, but you can hear the entire album on www.gagagagaga.net. Check out “You got yr. cherry bomb”, "Black Like Me’ and “Rhythm and Soul” for some highlights…great stuff

clt is jamming to ace of base in the zep nowadays.

I signed up with one of my alumni email addresses and it costs $8.99/month, but you can’t burn the music to CD or us the music in your iPod…no thanks.

I’ve been listening to Candlebox’s first album. That’s a really good rock album, I think they got caught up in the grunge era which may have hurt them a bit. I highly recommend the first album. You’ll still probably hear a few of their songs on the radio such as You, Far Behind and Change.

This is on my to listen/download list.

I’m all over the place the last couple of days. Random stuff I’ve been listening to:

Wilco - “Impossible Germany” (which doesn’t suck as bad as I thought, until the Television wankery near the end)
The Wrens - “Surprise, Honeycomb”
Blonde Redhead - “23” (which led me to…)
Asobi Seksu - “Thursday” (end of this one is killer)
My Bloody Valentine - “Sometimes”
TV on the Radio - “Wolf Like Me” (I had shelved Cookie Mtn for a few months)
Secret Machines - “Lightning Blue Eyes”
Polyphonic Spree - “Running Away” (Which may me think of Thumbsucker, which led me to):
Elliott Smith - New Moon double album (24 unreleased tracks)

I also briefly listened to Blitzen Trapper - “Wild Mountain”, Band of Bees -“Listening Man”, Feist - “Moon & My Man”, and Silversun Pickups - “Little Lover So Polite” somewhere in there. Plus a buncha stuff I tried but didn’t like, such as the new albums by Battles, and also that Fields trance stuff. Not a fan. Also, Icky Thump is a dud to me. Not diggin it at all.

I have pretty much lost that strong loyalty to any one artist, although I still have a few longtime favorites. But I enjoy way too many songs/sounds to stick to any one band/genre/sound. I am so enthusiastic by how much good music is being made right now.

Of course, I also sat enthralled through the entire 2005 V Festival playback on HDnet this weekend. Holy crap, that was good vibe. Oasis and Scissor Sisters were surprisingly awesome.

Yeah, that is a great album and I still break it out every few months too. They were kind of hit and miss after that album… mostly miss.

Some pretty obscure stuff there. I’m looking for some new stuff so I might check some of it out. I can’t believe you didn’t like Icky Thump though. It thought it was pretty quality from top to bottom with “Catch Hell Blues,” “Rag and Bone,” and “Little Cream Soda” being my favorites. Did you like their other stuff?

1) The White Stripes - Been around for a while, but I've only recently gotten into them. White Blood Cells, Elephant, and Get Behind Me Satan are all solid albums, but I think their newest one Icky Thump is their best yet. Highly recommended.

I’m kinda torn about the new album. Some songs I really like, the title track and Rag & Bones. Some though are not so fun. I don’t care for the Effect and Cause song. He basically just repeats that phrase 40 times. I don’t think I care for the Conquest sing either.

Squeeze Toy, Zebrahead, Cronic Future, Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, and Mos Def are the CD’s in my changer right now.
