Your Observer questions answered ...

Of course, I don't set policy for charlotte.com, but ...

They’ve set up the system so that you can log in once and stay logged in forever, but sometimes it becomes necessary to kick everyone out (I got kicked out, too) and sign back in for maintenance of the database, moving it to a new server, stuff like that that IT folks understand but I don’t.

The reason for registration is so we can get metrics for advertisers – xx percent of our audience is local, xx percent out of market, xx percent male and female, etc. There has to be a model for the internet that makes money or you won’t have free sites anymore, only pay sites. To achieve the model, we have to be able to accurately describe our audience.

Certainly it’s a personal choice whether you register for our site or just use cnn, etc. Things like Panthers coverage and Niners coverage, we hope, bring you to charlotte.com. I doubt cnn.com has a Jim Utter or the local news you mention above.

Hope this helps. I’d encourage you to register, or re-register, or ask them to send your password as a reminder, or whatever. Despite issues in the newspaper industry, there’s still no organization that does as well with local news (in its entirety) as the Observer and charlotte.com.

I thought the Observer covers a region not local
I can’t blame you on bugmenot. Like I said, personal choice.
funny part is I have encountered many people (some are family) who our of the belief that if they don’t enter correct, accurate info, they will not see the story they are looking for.

my laughter at their assumption has gotten me in trouble more than once.
I thought the Observer covers a region not local
it was my understanding that, in the Observer’s eyes, the region IS local.

:lmao:

Local is not a geography, but rather a subject matter. We cover matters of interest to people who live in Charlotte, and prioritize by the things of interest to the largest number of our readers. You guys are smart and business-savvy enough to understand that, I know.

I think the Raleigh guy is taking his job anyways.

fwiw, it was a Raleigh woman…
fwiw, it was a Raleigh woman…
Caulton Tudor is a woman?

Mike,
A cost cutting suggestion, that’s probably already been mentioned in this thread somewhere, how about eliminating the coupon mailers I get in my driveway about once a week? Maybe the advertisers in the mailer pay the Observer enough to cover all of the expenses, but I doubt it. I know this isn’t your area. But just my $.02.

Mike, any idea why Packer is back on his anti-Observer sports page kick again? I listen to about 10 minutes before I can’t stand it anymore on my way home. He was belittling Langston yesterday and Sports in general the last few times I had it on.

Kinda related, kinda off on a tangent.

What the heck can we do to get him OFF THE AIR?

The only thing I can think is boycott his sponsors. Everyone I know, who likes sports, thinks his show is embarrassing.
We cover matters of interest to people who live in Charlotte, and prioritize by the things of interest to the largest number of our readers.
Mike, with all due respect, I want to challenge that statement. You would give some other NBA teams more coverage than the Bobcats and you would give the Cowboys and Steelers the same coverage as the Panthers if that were so. You would also give VA Tech and USC better football coverage than any of the football teams in this state if what you said was true.

I know what you’re saying but you need to emphasize the fact you hand pick the “things of interest” you provide to the largest number of readers.

I don’t think anything I put in there was accurate. Hope they don’t rely on that info to much.

+1. Those things irritate the bejesus out of me. Whatever happened to the days where the paper boys would just throw those things away for us before it even got to our driveway?

trees > driveway junkmail

lol sry… I thought you were talking about the sports editor at the N&O.

Hey Mike, I like the current layout for the baseball roundup.

Me, too.

mike. i believe this question has already been asked. why do you ignore some of the questions in this thread. it looks pretty unprofessional to come on the niner board and create your own question and answer thread. then not answer the questions unless they make you look good.

I would really like to see LakeNorman49er and Mike P duke it out. We can set the fight up outside of Prospector near the ATM…:shades:

I have an answer, but will resist typing it because my answer might be perceived as “crossing over the line”.

Why do we even pay this guy any attention?
