Why do we even pay this guy any attention?
because for some reason a few niners think he is a niner fan. and 1 or 2 even thinks they’re special because they know the sports editor. whoopee ****.
Mike,
No story on the results of the Charlotte City Amateur golf tournament? The best amateur golfer in Charlotte. But 4 pages on the olympics? I fear with the merger the Observer truly is becoming more “regional” or “national”, depending on how you look at it. I read the USA Today for national story’s.

You shouldn’t expect a city like Charlotte to have its own newspaper. That’s just being ridiculous. You can watch the local news or read NN.N if you want to read about “local” news.
IIRC Mike P is in China right now, covering the Olympics.
Greetings from China. Here’s the city amateur story.

Mike Persinger 他共產主義?
有道理。

是。 他呆在那里。 他就是未推测怎么向Niner国家说再见。

Hey Mike. I am gonna say something nice about your paper.
夏洛特观察员是最佳的日报可利用为家庭交付在市夏洛特。
In case you were wondering, SilvioDante and I have trained for years in the Chinese Arts. We have mastered a lot of the language.
Here ya go Mike. This expression may turn out to be useful:
汗水商店不聘用?
Mike Persinger非常好在性感的舞蹈上。 Mike Persinger非常好在按摩上。 Mike Persinger需要金錢。 Mike Persinger需要飞机票向美國。
Survivor and I are not a liberty to disclose all of the reasons we are trained in the Chinese Arts.
However, I will tell that if you see someone at Halton Arena with a tattoo that looks like this on their left forearm
it is in your best interest not to talk with us…unless we address you 1st.
Thanks for the reminder to stay away.

It appears China doesn’t block NN.N.
Mike, noticed any censorship?
Some blog sites. They haven’t stopped anything from going out of Main Press Center, though.
Thanks Mike. I guess it was one of those deadline things that made it a day late?
It ended Sunday, it was in Monday’s paper. That’s not late in my book.
I’m all about criticism that’s fair, but we had a story in Monday paper off a Sunday event (that’s as fast as it goes in the dead-tree world), so I’m not sure where you’re coming from.

My apologies. I must have overlooked it yesterday, and I was specifically looking for the article. Then, when I saw your post, I assumed the article link was from the Tuesday edition since I missed it in the Monday edition.
For the third time in five months, the Charlotte Observer, amid a slumping economy and changing media landscape, is cutting jobs through voluntary buyouts – and layoffs, if necessary.
Contrary to what you might think, Mr Persinger, I hope this doesn’t impact you.
However, I am concerned that the trickle down may mean even less acknowledgement of Charlotte 49ers athletics in your paper and on your website.
Worse yet, would be making Mr Utter’s blog a pay site.

There’s no chance Utter’s blog, or any of our blogs, or any portion of our website, will become pay in the short term. In the web world, that ship has sailed for most topics. There are individuals who can make enough money that way to make a decent living – Dave Barry comes to mind, and some of the more popular sports teams have some writers who could do it.
In general terms, though, you need 100,000 unique visitors a week to attract national advertisers, where the real money is on the web. That’s why the decision was made (I was opposed, for the record) to do away with separate pages for Charlotte and Davidson and put the college basketball stuff all together on the same page, to try to aggregate the unique visitors to reach that 100,000 magic number.
While I see the business sense of this, I don’t agree with the concept. I suggested coming up with some way to do the page with cookies that would allow people to choose which team they’d like to see featured, but that’s a ways off. In the short term, you’ll have to wade through the ACC and Davidson stuff, too, to find your stories. They won’t always be the art (and we still face the issue with away art being unavailable in many cases).
Anyway, thanks for the sentiment – I think. It is a tough time in the business. There will be many sacrifices, and many will lose jobs for no reason other than economics. Keep those who do in your thoughts. They are no different from people at Wachovia or Freightliner or anywhere else that resorts to job cuts – struggling human beings who are out of work through no fault of their own.
Those of us who remain will continue doing the serious work of newspapers, which goes far beyond sports. Far, far beyond.
