He always seems happy… we are 3-8 over our last 11 games, but our coach is happy go lucky… I’m sure he’s thinking, I’m still rich, nobody at little ol Charlotte cares if we win, ho hum…

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Please fire this guy.

Ron is a good guy that cares about his players. I appreciate that about him. The coach speech about ā€œstandard is the standardā€, ā€œit’s about the journeyā€ can’t change ā€œwhen we lose a game or twoā€ā€¦You can get away with that stuff when you actually lost a game or two. It ain’t working Ron, but hats off that you can get in front of a camera and Coach speak like it is. If I were coach in Year 5 like this, I would be losing it on camera, and it would be entertaining.

  • He talks about how young we are…still!? It’s year 5…and he says it EVERY year.

  • ā€œWe have a standard of excellence and we are not lowering that standardā€
So…that standard of excellence is 9th place in CUSA??

  • ā€œOur goals from the beginning of the year have not changedā€
WTF are our goals??? Obviously…nothing to do with winning.

  • ā€œWe continue to learn and grow…all we are working towards is being the best version of ourselvesā€
Again…the BEST version of ourselves is currently 9th of 11 in CUSA!!

He talks about how close we’ve been in a lot of games…like that f’n matters. The participation trophy/moral victory parade is not anything I am remotely interested in. Being close to beating a Top 5 team or even a top 10 team is something to build on…being close and losing to UTEP, MTSU, FIU and RIce is NOTHING to brag about!

And he NEVER talks about winning and losing…ever. Nothing about being disappointed with where we are…that we are better than this…that 9th place is unacceptable and we are working to go on a run… NOTHING about winning and losing…ever.

A coach that does not prioritize winning will have a team that plays like they don’t care about winning and that’s exactly where we are. He couldn’t give 2 sh!ts about winning and it shows in the team and the record. But…we are working to be the best version of ourselves and if we do that we’re winners!

For the record I was bought in to Mike’s mantra of ā€œCompeting for Championshipsā€ā€¦not this Moral victory/close losses/participation trophy/process/learning/best version of ourselves bullsh!t.

Ron does believe Winning Matters. He stated multiple times early in the season. Here is one from the Boise St Game:
(83) Charlotte Men’s Basketball vs. Boise State - Postgame Presser - YouTube

I’m not listening to it so I’ll take your word for it…but that was 22 games ago.

If you have to look back 22 games to find a comment form Ron about winning…you pretty much proved my point.

It caught my attention as it was the first time I heard him state winning matters. It just stuck with me. Easier to state winning matters when you are winning. I want to see Ron succeed, but I do believe he is feeling the pressure to win.

Could be that Ron cares about winning and assumes you know it. It’s sort of like not going around always stating that ā€œwater is wet and is needed for lifeā€. Bitching about the results he’s getting is legit, but bitching about his sunny public demeanor is just bitching.

Well, you may be correct but he’s the happiest coach I’ve seen after getting his ass kicked repeatedly

Winning mattered until he was losing more than winning

Announcing the roster? Ron decided to reset the conference record and start fresh?

How about that 1 team eventually make the NCAA tournament.

One of my biggest issues with Ron is he is always happy to talk about why we lost players not playing hard enough, not following instructions, too young etc. I don’t if I have ever heard him accept blame.

Which is something that nearly every great coach does. When the team wins it’s the players and when the team loses the coach accepts blame . It’s a defining characteristic of great coach but also great leaders.
