No idea what is fueling this quick turn around optimismā¦but if this were to happen it would substantially change a lot of things around here with the program.
Perception, money, the city getting more involved, publicity, alumni/student/walmart fan supportā¦and ultimately hope and momentum going forward in all phases as well.
I think we tend to forget that these AAC schools have similar players on their rosters. IMO, what we have done is built our roster to a level where we can be legitimately competitive with them. Pretty much since we started football I have felt that we were usually outclassed from a talent perspective despite usually having a couple of stud players amongst the 1s. Where we got hammered was certain positions (OL, DL, DB) and especially in depth across the board. Big dropoff to our 2s and even moreso to our 3s. I think Poggi has mostly eliminated that and is working to plug the few remaining holes.
If we had an easier schedule this season I could see 7-5 or even 8-4. But we have two P5 games and several tough AAC road games. I still think 6-6 would be a strong performance against this schedule.
I think 6-6 would be a fantastic season. My gut tells me 5-7 and that is not bad for first year in AAC, tough non-conference and huge roster/coach turnover.
I think Jones looking as good as he did Saturday got people a little more optimistic. QB was our biggest question, and it looks like we have a decent answer.
Tulane, SMU, ECU, and Memphis seem to be the dominate figures remaining in the AAC. I beleive they are a step above CUSA. That being said the rest seem to all be in the same boat as before. UTSA will be good but FAU and UAB are a toss up, new coachās that donāt seem to be recruiting as well as Biff. Until weāre on the field though this is all based on appearances.
Including our portal transfers and freshmen commitments for 2023, both here and anticipated, I am curious who in the AAC had a similar windfall of new talent? We have a lot of talented dudes coming in and you yourself just named a few more studs that are coming. Many of these guys are older, fully developed or damn near fully grown, and have already played at top 20 football programs.
Having written the preceding , enough wins for a bowl win is a successful season. That would show real progress in the most difficult schedule in program history. I have no doubt we could crush it in CUSA with the guys.
I agree with mean Joe, and correct me if I am wrong but doesnāt CHEAT usually bro g in on average about 4-5 four stars each year. I think this year they are a bit above that. I think it is either 5 or 6 four stars this year.
The GA state game seems to be pivotal in terms of number of wins on the season.
As many college football games come down to situations, 4th down etc⦠and clock management⦠we will need to give Biff time to learn with no experience at this level, wins in conference often come down to this.
Very sudden like, I am really starting to get excited about our football schedule. Itās full of games that would be meaningful to win for our Charlotte University., with each win making the next more meaningful. It makes last yearās schedule look blah
In case anyone didnāt see it in the portal thread, James Foster is leaving. Not that surprised, other than I didnāt think Williams outplayed him in the spring game.
If I had to pick a QB to cut, it would be Foster. He got his chance to start, fumbled on his first solid hit while scrambling, claimed his finger hurt too bad to go back in, then was well enough to dress the following week. Williams is much better and certainly much tougher.
