2023 C-USA Basketball Tournament, 3/8-11

Sadly that is good for CUSA. From the league’s perspective, it didn’t really matter who won our game. We had about equal NET ratings. But now UAB and UNT will get important NET lifts at the end of the year (Two Q1 games for the winner of that game). I think there are multiple scenarios that result in 2 bids for CUSA. Not a lock, but looking favorable. UNT beating FAU in the CCG being the most obvious one. But UAB beating them should do it too. The horror show is if MTSU somehow upsets FAU. Then it gets dicey.

Biggest question is what if FAU beats UNT… That will be a close call.

NA’s unscientific probability predictions of 2 bids:

UNT beats FAU 99%
UAB beats FAU 85%
FAU beats UNT 50%
FAU beats UAB 20%
MTSU beats FAU <10% - this is me being cynical. This is the “give FAUs deserved at large to some .500 P5” scenario

Ideal scenario is UNT beats FAU in the finals allowing the two best from CUSA (future AAC) in the tournament.

Dude he made an amazing step back 3 after faking the drive. Weston had the game of his career and probably misses that 8 out of 10 times. He actually hit both late 3s.
D was good but O was better on that play, unfortunately.

That entire rationale ignores the massively long run for almost the entire back portion of the first half and a good bit of the early 2nd half where the only pts we had were Gipson’s contested 3. MTSU was on a 12-0 run after they switched to a zone. Ron’s answer? Sit on 4 TOs. He didn’t even try to break up their momentum.

That is what I dreaded about him in a tournament setting. How his entire philosophy is about teaching moments and stubborn adherence to his dogma. That crap is probably serviceable inside a long season. But you cannot coach a 1 and done environment like that. You have to value every possession.

If he instead stems that tide, and assuming he actually can coach, is smart enough to adjust his lineup and strategy to deal with that zone, we probably aren’t looking at a 1 possession game at the end, or waiting for Gipson to bail us out with a desperation 3.

In my mind, we used up our clutch end of half shot for that game just trying to hold a lead at halftime after we pissed a 13 pt one away. No freaking wonder we didn’t have it in us again at the end.

Good post NA, I mean how many times have we had double digit leads and we lose them while Sanchez sits on the bench and does nothing, even the announcers asked why we didn’t call a TO last night, I can’t do another year of this, Halton will have 500 people in it next year if he comes back.

Mike Hill do the right thing like you did with football, fire Sanchez and get some new blood in here as we join the AAC!

If you want to beat the Niners you can almost sandbag it the majority of the game because you know that we aren’t going to score many points given our offensive style. You just have to turn up the intensity late in the game and make a few extra plays.

How many games of their career have been had against Charlotte BB? It is a statement I have heard many times a year for many ,many, many years. It is mind numbing.

I really want to know Sanchez take on not taking TO’s. It makes no sense. BB is a game of momentum and runs that have to be countered. I know he is a stubborn grinder but there has to be some type of philosophy behind it that I would like to hear explained. Not holding my breath on that though.

One of the things this year Ron said in post game that infuriated me was when he said they knew the adjustment they wanted to make but like to wait until later in second half so the other team doesn’t have time to adjust.

What? So you know how to counter but instead I want to wait because I are afraid of their adjustment? Just terrible coaching Philosophy.

It was an amazing shot, you just cannot give up a 3 pointer on this play.

It was an amazing shot, and we did play good defense. Unfortunately, I bet that move/shot is one he has practiced a 1,000 times. You could just see in how he moved that whole dribble step back was purely to get rhythm and then boom 3 in your face.

MTSU has athletes and play a brand of basketball I find enjoyable to watch.

Fla Atlantic lead MT by a dozen at half. The result of our game yesterday is probably inconsequently except for Ron’s continued employment at Charlotte

I don’t think MTSU are world beaters but they play more palatable basketball than what we see.

One point game under 5 minutes now

Freakin’ Weston is 1-10 from the field today, including 0-4 from 3…of course, he is.
