2023 Softball šŸ„Ž

clt says video review should be obvious, that wasnā€™t.

we still had to win another game to advance, but it was clear the umps were ready to call it it a day

You, sir, are hardly a bear. No one is ā€œbutthurtā€ by your posts. Youā€™re giving yourself way too much credit.
So, as it turns out Middle was just a hot team at the right time. While you had no reason to suspect that at the time, turns out you were wrong to disrespect both them and our team. Maybe once admit you were wrong. Maybe once say you shouldnā€™t have characterized that loss as ā€œshitting the bedā€ or ā€œpulling a Ninerā€. Admitting you are human and sometimes wrong is OK. Iā€™m not going to throw back ā€œDude. Itā€™s ok. It happens, Itā€™s lifeā€ That would make me appear to be a condescending jerk.

Do I think you are going to admit you made a mistake? No, I do not. Again, just to be clear, your posts donā€™t hurt my feelings at all. There is an old adage that applies. ā€œConsider the source.ā€
Carry on.

Dont like that Sam got called for illegal pitches several times this weekend, and Dukes pitcher was three feet off the rubber every pitch!
Home cooking :flushed:

Most of those calls were in the Campbell game Saturday night. The word at the game was that Campbellā€™s coach was chirping about that to the umps and they finally gave her what she wanted.
I hate that complaining about some non existent rule infraction until you finally get a call is a strategy that sometimes works. Officials normally donā€™t have the fortitude to point out to coaches that they know the rules and donā€™t need the coachā€™s help.
The calls didnā€™t seem to bother Sam.

Our catcher had the ball in plenty of time for a sure out. In reality Duke slid way short of the plate so what was our catcher suppose to do ? Wait for her to reach the plate . I think not as she instinctively put the tag on her way short of the plate. If the ball hadnā€™t arrived it definitely would be a block. Why is home plate any different than anywhere else on the field? Really a BS call that changed everything.

Terrible call but bases loaded with no one out and only score 1 off a wild pitch was the game to me. Have to seize that momentum right there and capitalize since Duke was struggling with scoring runs at the end of the season.

Great season and hopefully many more to come.

Softball podcast, goes in on the NCAA and talks about the call in our game in his intro. Also talks about our students who were ejected yesterday.

I believe it was one specific student who was ejected. There was some back and forth yelling between Duke fans and Charlotte students. Security made no effort to control the Duke people. Furthermore, as the Charlotte student was being escorted out, there was derogatory stuff being yelled at him by Duke fans and no action was taken against them. I suppose that was because Duke was home and their yelling fans were ā€œadultsā€ , which I consider to be cause for them to be held to a higher standard than students. Thatā€™s just my opinion.

On the subject of NCAA stupidity: there was a nice old lady handing out Double Bubble gum to fans before the game. She said that Duke normally throws the gum pieces into the stands when one of their players hits a double, but the NCAA nixed that for the Regional Tournament. First of all, I like Dukeā€™s little ritual even though I hate bubble gum. Second of all, would it not have been OK for them to do it last weekend for all doubles and not just Duke doubles? Seems as if the NCAA has a very tight ass.

On the subject of umpiring, I agree with the podcast that the obstruction rule is way too much up to interpretation. As the podcaster read it, the catcher has to be DELIBERATELY blocking the runner for the call to be made. I very much doubt replay showed out catcher was intentionally blocking the Duke runner.

BTW, one of Dukeā€™s bats was taken away from their dugout before the game when the umps were inspecting their bats. Draw your own conclusion. One of our fans observed that Duke players were all using the same bat and his conclusion was ā€œthat bitch is loadedā€.

clt hates the acc even more now

Being loaded is typically not the reason an umpire removes a bat out of the dugout. The bats are random tested for compression compliance before they get to make it into the dugout (as of a few years agoā€¦unless this has changed).

Once they pass that and make it to the dugoutā€¦The umpires review EVERY dugout bat for cracks and dents before every game. An umpire can remove a bat for excessive cracks or dents for 2 reasonsā€¦1 is safety in case the bat shattersā€¦which happens with composite batsā€¦2 some bats actually get ā€œhotterā€ the more they crack/dent (why some players illegally ā€œrollā€ their bat to crack the carbon fibers and make it ā€œhotterā€)

Each team is sponsored by a certain bat company and is strongly encouraged if not required to use the same brand bat (which is why they all use what looks like the same bat).

Not sure which brand Duke usesā€¦but Easton Ghost bats are the worst. They are amazing batsā€¦very hot out of the wrapper but many of them crack within the first 100 swings. Many umpires let most of the superficial spidering/webbing cracks go and only look for deeper cracks (or dents or rattles).

Funny story: We were in the Little League World Series 2 years ago (12 yr olds) Easton was a major sponsor and gave every kid a new Ghost bat ($350 bats!). So we had 14 brand new Ghost bats. Literally half of them were removed from play after 2 games due to cracking (but those umpires were ridiculously strict and looking for the smallest of cracks).

If dented/cracked within a year, Easton will warranty replace it once within the first 12 months.

They ALL get warranty replacedā€¦all of them.

This seems to be right.

So help me with this one. The people from UNC-NJ that have brought us the abuse of other teams in Cameron were upset and/or offended by our heckling at an outdoor facility? Funny!

It wasnā€™t them. It was the NCAA officials there.
Well, they may have been offended, but it was the NCAA officials who kicked our guy out.

BTW, during our Saturday game against Campbell, one of those same officials was sitting in front of me while a Campell fan was complaining loudly about every freakinā€™ call. She remarked that alcohol might have been involved, but took no action. Probably assumed he was a parent and was giving him a break, but still a double standard when a student is ejected the next day. I really wanted to punch that guy, as he was saying something about one of our players that was obnoxious and untrue.

Carmichael?

Clearly from context, he meant Duke(Cameron) Indoor Stadium.
Still havenā€™t figured out how a basketball arena is a stadium

Yep Cameron. When I attended Chapel Hell that one long year I lived in Winston dorm right across from Carmichael. Should have known better but I am getting rather old now. Sorry if I offended any UNC @ NJ fans.

Iā€™m sure the same ā€˜NCAA Officialsā€™ were ā€˜Duke officialsā€™ during the regular season.
