People bad mouth JR Smith’s shot selection but the fact is for every 100 shots Smith has taken in his career from the floor he has scored more points than Kobe and Carmelo and is comparable to some of the best scorers of all time like Jordan. That’s just simple math and the absolute facts.

Hell even from 2 pointers
FG
.476% Kobe
.469% JR Smith
.455% Carmelo
3 point
.371% JR Smith
.345% Carmelo
.331% Kobe
I don’t know how it’s so hard to believe.
Have you ever watched a Knicks game?.. Better yet, have you ever watched a basketball game?
He only shoots the ball twice a game! Twice! Thats it! And he was just cut by his 3rd team in 3 yrs so it appears that 3 league front offices disagree that he is one of the best pick and pop/block guys is the nba.
He only plays 15 minutes a game too…
I never said he was a great player, I never even said he was a starter. I’m actually surprised he’s started 39 games the last 2 years.
What you leave out is the context of THAT conversation was Steisma vs Phil Jones who were both trying to make the Timberwolves that year. Who was cut and who is still around?
What I said was true though. The guy shot an incredible 55% from 16 feet last year, up from the .500% the year I mentioned that. He’s still blocking a ton of shots too. Those might be his only skills among many holes in his game that don’t allow him to be more than he has been but the fact is find me another player that hits 16 footers and blocks shots like he does. You can’t an won’t.
He has an NBA career and Jones is in the Bahammas.
Many great players get cut every year. Bruce Bowen was cut many times and only had two skills as well but in the right system and mix of players he was effective doing what he did well.

No what? You want to talk about his shot selection, the fact is he’s made shots as well or better than many all time superstars scorers his career. That’s just the facts. There really is no advanced metrics in it so you can’t even talk s*** about it.
I understand the math behind effective FG% but it only works for people who come from the “He Who Shall Not Be Named” school of thought that 50% 2FG = 33% 3FG. Mathematically it works out, systematically it doesn’t since it doesn’t take into account that long rebounds off 3 pters tend to lead to fast breaks for the opponents, which then hurts your D. It might be a fun number to throw out here and there, but it’s not representative of a whole picture.
What do you call effective field goal %? Most call that an advanced metric. It is a stat to make shooters seem better than they are. JR Smith has shot above 40% from 3 one time in his career…and he shot 40.3%. His career shooting % is 42.5% and 3% is 37.1%.
Guess who is incredibly close to that? Kirk Hinrich. 41.3% and 37.7%.
Don’t give me some garbage effective % crap. Averages tell more of the story. If Kirk shot as many threes as JR Smith does he would be near the top of the effective field goal % leaderboard.

I just showed you from just two pointer land alone he’s been half a percent as good as Kobe, and better than Carmelo for his career, and he’s significantly better from 3 than both dared to be.
He’s hit 47% from just 2 pointers along and 37% from 3’s. In what world is that not good numbers for a shooting guard?

:)) and you don’t factor in at all that he fact he shoots far more 3’s than about anyone. Per 36 minutes he hits 2.6 compared to 1.4 for Hinrich and how that impacts his overall FG% has to be factored into any discussion. The reality is he’s still scoring more points per shot attempt from the floor. It has to be factored in that

No…the reality is they both suck at shooting period. Their career averages are nearly identical…meaning if Kirk shot the same amount of shots as JR, they would apparently be the best shooters in the history of the NBA.
Works out on a scoreboard too. 3 points is 3 points.
Look up the experimental D league team that dominates the D league by shooting basically all 3’s. Look at the rate of 3’s per game and how it’s grown the last 20 years and where basketball is headed.
systematically it doesn't since it doesn't take into account that long rebounds off 3 pters tend to lead to fast breaks for the opponents, which then hurts your D.
And more offensive rebound opportunities for the team shooting them. It’s a negligible difference if any. Seriously if you are shooting three’s then there are players out around the 3 point line by definition that have position and should be getting back to defend.
It might be a fun number to throw out here and there, but it's not representative of a whole picture.
It is. You take a certain number of shots and you score a certain number of points on them. The facts are the facts.

A streak shooter like that may shoot a team to a win they normally wouldn’t win otherwise, but they’ll also shoot them out of some wins they otherwise could’ve won with more consistent shots.
The 3 point shooters also tend to get to the free throw line less. Free throw points may be taken into account in the scoring %, but it doesn’t account for other limitations of fouling, such as players getting into foul trouble and having to sit, and teams being forced to play softer defense or double more when a player gets into foul trouble. That’s why using the shot some is helpful, particularly when a team is overmatched in other areas, but relying on it too much, and when you allow the opposing team to bait your players into even lower percentage shots if they have a decent perimeter D, is problematic.
They shot 45+ three’s a game and were one of the top teams in the DLeague.
If you really can’t see basketball and how far it has moved towards this ALREADY then you are completely blind. The NBA has already went from 5% of shots to 20% or something like that from 3’s on average. Three’s and layups has been the trend for years now for most winning teams it’s just been identified more recently but the fact is most of the winning teams were doing this already, they’ve tracked it.

Players don’t foul out often in the NBA number one with 6 fouls. #2 taking jumpshots inside the arch are really no more likely to be a foul as many are fade aways to get it off and who do you think is drawing fouls under the basket mostly? Dwight Howard? Even if it’s a bunch of 75% shooters that’s almost as good as a turnover in many cases if you come away with less than 2 points which is usual for most high ft rate players to be sorry at the FT line. It’s usually not the types shooting 90% that draw the fouls.
They led the nation in 3’s attempted and were in the national championship game. They’ve won 30+ games like the last 4 years and easily been one fo the best teams at that level. Even beat a D1 team in an exhibition I think.
You can say what you want about the brand of basketball, but people are getting it and starting to implement it. The Vipers in the Dleague aren’t even a great shooting team from three at 35% yet they still are having success and one of the better teams in the Dleague jacking up 50 three’s.
Wait until some team runs their system and shoots 50 threes and hits 39%. They already won the championship leading the league in 3 point shots and played in the finals another time.
It doesn’t matter where you get points for if you are scoring more on less shots and pushing pace teams are going to have a hard time matching you if your effective FG% is about 60%. That’s where basketball is headed.
