Any 2013 recruits?

Some one else brought up a good point about there being zero seniors next year, so I am OK if we only use two of the schollies now. I just dont want to have a year go by when we have so many open schollies and no recruits. B/c then the JUCO train starts to roll in and who knows what that will bring.

We need to bring in AT LEAST one more big man (JUCO-ready to play) and one shooter (freshman or JUCO) for this fall. Can’t just depend on Lester or improvement from current players for 3-pt. shooting.

How is depending on Lester any different from XYZ high school player?

Are you speculating or do you know for sure mayfield is gone for good? I have not heard an official announcement but that does not mean anythig.
They won’t make an official announcement just like they never did for Spears.
they will make it official if he is dismissed just like they did for Spears:

Based on the timing of the Spears release, we could find out this week on Mayfield. 17 days is Saturday.

Wouldn’t it be the most reasonable to assume our players will improve?

Yes, it would be but surely you don’t disagree that it would be nice to pull in at least one guy that has potential to be that “missing” shooter that we all know we need.

Its not----my point was that we REALLY need to have one player on the roster next year that we are confident can hit a 35% clip or better from 3. The more options we have on the team, the more likely one MIGHT be that guy (ie; I’d rather not put all our eggs in the “basket” of a red-shirt freshman----I would love to see a JUCO brought in for this).

I would rather rely on guys that have been here than expect someone new to come in and produce at a high level.

I think we will see Twill and EVic take another step and am anxious to see Benny and Denzel next season.

With that said to 9Rs point I think it would be wise to bring in some more talent aside from Lester so that we aren’t having to count on a certain level of improvement.

For me it isn’t either/or - I want our current players to improve, but to also guard against some of them hitting ceilings or problems by bringing in more talent that may be able to do the same things.

A JUCO would be ok with me. At this point I am expecting that we are looking at our main rotation next year right now - with Thorne playing more, minus Bras, and obviously Lester coming in. Throwing one JUCO into that mix makes sense to me.

JUCO could make sense, but JUCO’s tend to want plenty of playing time. We’ll have Henry, Ingram, Lester, Twill and Benny at 1/2.

Should still have mins in the post right? We also have successfully recruited JUCOs in the past just to play a certain role.

Yeah - I wouldn’t want us to fall back to a JUCO unless we knew we were missing on top talent. A JUCO shooter I am guessing would only be on the table if Lester was looking like a bust. I know he can’t practice with the team but I am sure the staff has an idea how he is looking.

If this program is making progress, then freshmen we bring in should not be for next year, unless they are blue chip recruits. At this point, I don’t think we’re signing sg’s that are likely to be instant contributors over upperclassmen, but I’d be happy to be wrong when we sign an elite recruit.

So realistically it sounds like we’re really talking about whether to bring in a juco sg to contribute next year, as opposed to the returning players. But then we’re going to be adding to the bulge of guards we have as juniors and then seniors for that year, and we won’t be bringing in someone else for another 2 years that could develop into a solid player/star. I’d rather see if the returning guys can step up to the point that they are sufficient, rather than bring in a juco. I’m skeptical they’ll be able to find someone that can step in right away and play well enough with the other players to take minutes from the guys we have. Most jucos have required at least half a season to get integrated into the team. We already have three players that are ok 3 point shooters, Benkovic (40%), Nickerson (34%) and Ingram (32%). I think both of them will improve other aspects of their games, and I also think Williams and Henry will improve their outside shooting with another offseason to work on it, with Lester coming in with the potential to hit outside shots even if he isn’t already a lights out shooter.

A juco post player with some height might make some sense to help with the center position. I’d rather not see Clayton have to play center too much, and Thorne can only play so many minutes.

Are we debating whether we hope to get better/good recruits in? Isn’t that what you hope for for every class? To get the best possible players? Hoping for that doesn’t mean you think the current players are complete busts.

I would too, but competition is NEVER a bad thing.

If we can get a JUCO better than a current starter, you get him. I hope all of our guys get better but we still need a shooter.

The question is does Major think we need a shooter or anymore shots from the 3.
The question is does Major think we need a shooter or anymore shots from the 3.
Of course Major would like to have that as a threat. We don’t have a ton of minutes available takes getting the right guy. I think a big is a more pressing need than a shooter. EVN and Twill have improved from first year, one must imagine they improve again.
