Best Albums of 2008 - Running Thread

Hope the new CC album is up to snuff, hard candy was gawd awful. Sara B. She does have a great voice but compared to piano players like ben folds or jamie cullum shes average, a little too heavy on the cords and too poppy for my taste, although she is cute.

I wasn’t really that impressed with the new Counting Crows album after I had read a bunch of good reviews… but I have really loved anything they’ve done since August and Everything After either.

The new Black Keys is pretty good, but on the first couple of listens it didn’t captivate me as much as some of their older stuff did. Definitely a change of pace album for them with the choir, some electronic sounds, and banjos on various tracks.

Just got the new album by the Drive-by Truckers… Brighter Than Creation’s Dark… haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but I kind of like it so far. This is the first album I’ve heard of theirs.

The older DBT albums are supposedly better Max, but I’m not enough of a fan to confirm that.

I absolutely love the album cover concept/imagery/name. Brighter than Creation’s Dark is a fantastic name. They’re also really heavy into the crow symbolism, it seems.

I have a few of their songs on my iPod, and I never skip them when they come up. I have a feeling they’d be incredible live.
LOL, I believe I was busy buying this one while you were typing this. The first listen was solid. Looking forward to the next.
You should enjoy it, I’ve been liking it more each time I listen to it, a huge improvement over their last album.

Forgot about that Black Keys album, I liked that one too. Also, I like the new Portishead album after a first listen. And I also forgot about Beach House, I thought that was pretty good too.

A couple that I like…

ASHES dIVIDE, Keep Telling Myself It’s Alright (latest project of Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle – will be part of Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution 2008 tour)

Nada Surf, Lucky

You didn’t like Magic potion? I thought it was good.

These New Puritans - Best Pyramid

is a pretty good cd.

I’m not sold on Hamburger’s latest.

I thought it was alright, I liked Rubber Factory a lot more and so far I’m liking Attack & Release more than Magic Potion as well.

The new M83 and Roots albums are both pretty fantastic.

Didn’t know Nada Surf had a new album.

My favorite album of the year will probably be Banner Pilot’s album coming out soon.

Panic At The Disco's new cd, in my opinion is a catastrophic failure
I'm sorry, but I just cant listen to crap like Jason Mraz, OAR, Panic whatever, etc.

I was at a get together this weekend and heard the new Panic at the disco record. I never gave them much of a listen. Heard bits of the last crap they put out and couldnt take it. The emo thing doesnt do it for me.

This new record sounds nothing like the last. Much more harmonic. Sounds like they locked them selves in a basement for a few months with only Sgt Peppers, Abbey Rd, and a few Cheap Trick records to listen to.

I also heard a few cuts from Weezer’s new record. I hope to God it was a joke cause the stuff I heard was unbearable.

Aimee Mann’s new CD is really good, as always. Also, I really liked the new Goldfrapp CD…Seventh Tree it’s called. Good stuff.

I haven’t liked a Weezer song since Pinkerton, with the exception of Island in the Sun.

I picked up the Alk3 Ep in preparation for seeing them in June. It is pretty solid.

Interesting. I just have a hard time believing I’d like them. Then again, its not unprecedented for an already susccessful band to change thier sound. I actually liked when The Walkmen changed theirs, until I found out their best song was a cover. Great song, but write it yourself.

Heard a song from it the other day. Sucked horribly. And WTF is up with Rivers’ pornstache? The new album cover looks like the Village People:

Agree, on both.

Jason Mraz’s new cd is amazing.
as is Gavin DeGraw’s new one.
and, of course, Clay Aiken’s newest album:wub:

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good cover.

See:

MxPx’s version of No Action
Get Up Kids’ version of Close to Me and Alec Eiffle (hell any song they cover)
Scared of Chaka’s version of Hand in Hand

I’m actually a big fan of Face to Face’s version of In Between Days, but I like the Cure version better, and I hate the cure. Death Cab for Cutie does a pretty good cover of This Charming Man, it is one of the few DCFC songs I like. Hendrix did some great covers, Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower. I like Digger’s cover of True Blue and Sonic Youth’s cover of Get Into the Groove.

I could go on all day. Leatherface’s version of Hops and Barley is way better than the original.

How about a running thread for the most disappointing albums of 2008. Be Your Own Pet and The Spill Canvas, I’m looking at you. Also, Nas’ Greatest Hits CD was pretty weak considering the amount of legitimately good material to choose from.

Johnny Cash-Hurt
Madeleine Peyroux-Dance Me to the End of Love
JamisonParker-Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Death Cab for Cutie-This Charming Man

Etc.

Edit: I didn’t even see that you had the DCFC cover in there, PB. Really is a great song.
