Before Xavier, Tulsa was the school that kept getting jilted by its coaches following NCAA success - Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, and Bill Self being the most notable.

That also meant they were having a lot of success, including an elite 8 under Self.

Buzz did not do all those things but I bet he has dinner and been over to the homes of the people that did and he picked up the phone and called I bet they would take his call.

I am just saying everyone on here talks about moving to the BE. If you want to do that move there are only a handful of people in Charlotte that can make that happen and none of them are in our Athletic Department / Administration.

I am not saying hiring Buzz puts us in the BE and money to burn but all else being even on the coaching search do you not think this will not come into play? If you do not then you have never seen how the City of Charlotte really works.
I agree with your point about raising money. Not sure about the Big East reasoning though. If Coach A, say Brownell, takes Charlotte to a Sweet 16. While Coach B, say Buzz, only makes it to the NIT. Don’t you think Coach A makes the school look better than Coach B for the Big East?
My question back to you is how much did South Florida’s win loss record factor into the BE decision?

I am also making these observations based on there are no home run canidates out there and how this is moving Buzz up the ladder based on that.

Want to know how you get support in this city? Win in the tournament.

If you want to try to sell me on Buzz because he is a good coach, go ahead… but don’t try to sell me on him because he has Chapel Hill ties that will help with fund raising and his MJ is going to help with recruiting. I don’t see it happening.

Get a coach that can get us in the postseason on a regular basis and our other problems (fan support, media coverage, donations, etc.) will take care of themselves.

Tell me how you feel about him (or assistant) when the NCAA probation hammer comes down for that.
Come on HP. You know how the game is played. If they can go see a Panthers game why not a Bobcats game and just happen to run into old friends?

The QB that grayshirted to Wake in football and then Marshall comes after him hard and on the way back to the airport he just happens to run into ex Marshall QB Chad Pennington. Crazy coincedential world in recruiting.
Carolina doesn’t cheat, but all the top 10 programs are extremely creative and shady. I remember Joseph Fortes mom having a job with a sports agent in Chapel Hill making 150k a yr. I am sure she really “earned” that.

If you wanna get the best talent, you gotta bend some rules.

Typical Charlotte fan…fairweather fans…if things sounds or are going good= Great!!!
THings sound bad or lose a game= TERRIBLE…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…You guys really do think people are going to write checks for UNCC…they never have and never will…that has beeen the problem with Charlotte all along…Think of it in terms like a recruit…Recruit 1 has been offered by UNCC, UNC, Memphis, Louisville, etc…your pitch…Just imagine the teams, exposure you get at Charlotte…get to play Duquene, Fordham, St. Joes, etc…UNC, Duke, Memphis pitch…Your on TV every night…you play UNC, DUKE, Florida State, UConn, etc…
Rich Guy 1…You can give money to watch Fordham, Duquense, St. Joe’s, in a 5,000 seat arena…or you can GIVE to a university with a 20,000 seat arena…get to watch eventual pro players…other good teams…

This seems to be a common practice with many school, many cases of similar jobs with Dukie parents. I remember alot us hubub about Duhon’s mom.

I think they saw it more as they were a sleeping giant and because FL is such a hot bed for football recruiting. Definitely not because of the coach.

I believe if somebody, say like Temple, does better than us when we get a new coach, they would look more favorable in any BE expansion.

I totally agree with you that money talks, and Buzz potentially could be the best at bringing that. But I also think winning will increase donations.

I still say we will hire Buzz

Man I hope not, if he can’t win with Tenn’s resources he isn’t going to win here. I don’t care how many unc-ch butts he’s kisssing.

Wasn’t Bobby connected to a lot of the $$$ in the Charlotte region, as he himself is part of the $$$???

Winning is what matters, not being able to mingle with some douche from Myers Park in khakis and boat shoes.

Get me a coach that can coach, recruit and win. If we wanted a wine & cheese host, I am sure we could find one with less responsibilities than the men’s basketball program.

Do you even have the ability to speak or write in complete sentences with proper punctuation? Are you sure you went to UNC Charlotte because your communication skills resemble that of middle school drop out.

i hope we hire buzz. i think he’d be great for the school. He’s certainly done well at ASU the 2 times he’s been there. the only place he didn’t succeed is at Tennessee. but a lot of people didn’t succeed there.

Ouch

IMO- and I am not endorsing him just objectively looking at it- he would have a better situation here because he is a unc guy in a unc town, access to mj/bobcats and I suspect we would get a ton of recruiting help

I think the unc alum, media, support and money here would not allow him to fail- to a degree

At App and UT those factors don’t exist
I think the idea that the unc-ch connections will help get people in the city excited or interested isn’t as true as people make it. I mean the Bobcats have MJ, Larry Brown, and have drafted a number of tar heels, yet their attendance and following are still relatively weak.
He would get the South Charlotte and Myers Park movers and shakers excited enough to stroke a check. Do not ever underestimate the Chapel Hill pull in the City of Charlotte. We have buildings on our campus named after Chapel Hill grads. If you ever doubt the Chapel pull in Myers Park / South Charlotte look in the Carolina Living section of the Observer on Sunday’s and see how many debutante and wedding announcements are from Chapel Hill grads and see where they went to High School and you will see the coorelation. Probably 70% are South Charlotte / Myers Park area grads who went to Chapel Hill.

I have been trying to tell you guys since Monday that this has momentum and makes sense in so many ways except on court performance but was pretty much shot down as a stupid idea and Buzz as a retread. I am sure if Buzz comes he will be set up with a pretty nice staff.

Our Administration wants a hand shaking, fund raising, show him around town Coach.

-Buzz gets the ACC / Chapel Hill / influence going and the media will love that

-He also gets to be paraded around town and tells the money people the old Chapel Hill / MJ war stories they all laugh and slap him on the back as one of their own then he asks for a check to get that same type of tradition started around Charlotte.

-He also still has his house in Charlotte and is kids are in school here and he is still driving to Boone everyday. He wants to coach but loves living in Charlotte.

 • He brings a recruit in and just happens to stop by and see the Bobcats and gets a quick word in with Hall of Fame Coach Larry Brown and happens to see MJ walking down the hall and says hello. Pretty good impression to the kid as he is telling him I know the in and outs of the NBA and what it will take to get you there.

I am not saying he will be the next Coach but this is what I imagine is running thru more than one head in the Dept. Also never discount how Chapel Hill takes care of their own and if he is brought in for an interview Dean Smith and Larry Brown will both be on the phone to the decision makers making a case for him.

What he did at UT is a complete different situation than what he will have here in Chapel Hill West and you guys do realize what the acromym you given to our current Chancellor.
You make some valid points but reading that makes me want to puke. I don’t want to become some sort of Chapel Hill JV team.
Sparty 100% endorses Mr. Bojangles’ statement. My thoughts exactly.

Man I hope not, if he can’t win with Tenn’s resources he isn’t going to win here. I don’t care how many unc-ch butts he’s kisssing.
Sparty also agrees with this statement. Good point. Y’all are some smart peeps.

Being a fan of the Denver Nuggets, I’m glad at least one Dean Smith disciple is doing OK!
Uhhh, from a long time UNC-Ch hater, Lary Brown has done ok. George Karl isn’t shabby. Ole Roy has two titles and a few more FF appearances. Gutheridge went to the FF.

You can bust on the holes all you want, but Dean Smith’s tree is pretty healthy.

If it was a poker game Bobby could not even ante up to play. There is CRAZY money in Charlotte. You would be amazed. One low level Investment Banker that just made partner in Charlotte makes more in 2 months than Bobby does in a year and he is probably under 35.

Here is where the problem lies. Tapping into that money!! I loved Lutz but put him in a dinner setting meeting and greeting and selling and I think he is very uncomfortable. On the golf course he is fine but it was just not in his nature. There is nothing wrong with that. It just was not his thing.

I am saying all things equal (winning, recruiting, etc.) you have to push Buzz up the ladder. I also want a BB coach not an exclusive fund raiser but Charlotte needs both.

The recuiting thing is a little funny to me because who did most of our recruting Lutz or Moxely? Whoever comes in must bring in assistants that can get it done. If we sign a great Coach and have sh*t asistants then we are worse off than we already are. New Coach needs a hungry Orlando Early, Butch P. on staff. I think that is as important as anything.

Are you Buzz Peterson’s cousin or brother?

The guy has little personality, average coaching ability and average recruiting ability. People need to stop looking at everything with their powder blue tinted glasses.

I’ll say it again, people overstate the amount of $$$ some UNC-CH alums are going to throw at our athletic program, especially basketball. Our focus should not be UNC-CH money, it should be hiring a coach that can win, recruit and energize the program.
