Canada trip

Ian was leading scorer!!

Sept. 1, 2008 Charlotte 109, Sheridan 55

Junior shooting guard Ian Andersen led six players in double-figures as Charlotte raced past Sheridan College, 109-55, in the finale of the 49ers 2008 preseason Canadian Tour. Charlotte finished the three-game weekend with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents by an average of 49.0 points.
Andersen hit his first three three-point attempts to push Charlotte to an early 13-3 lead and the Niners never looked back. Charlotte led 58-19 at the half.

Junior Phil Jones scored 15 points with 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Red-shirt freshman Javarris Barnett scored 12 points with 11 rebounds, sophomore An’Juan Wilderness added 12 points and nine boards and seniors Charlie Coley (11 points) and Lamont Mack (10 points) both hit double-figures despite limited playing time in the second half.

“I’m really happy with the first half,” said 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz. “Our defense was excellent and we shared the ball well. I was really pleased with our pressing and we mixed up defenses really well. The second half was not as sharp but I’m still pleased overall with what we did in the second half.”

In the 49ers three games, they were led in scoring by three different players: Charlie Coley vs. Toronto with 15 points, Shamarr Bowden vs. York with 21 and Andersen vs. Sheridan with 18. At least 10 different players scored in all three games. Eight different players scored in double figures at least once. Charlotte forced 73 turnovers in the three games, an average of 24.3 per game and collected 43 steals, an average of 14.3 per game. Junior DiJuan Harris averaged 5.0 steals in the three games.

“We wanted to look at a lot of different lineups and give guys a lot of minutes, and we accomplished that,” Lutz said of his goals for the trip. “Everybody got significant playing time. We saw some things that we weill work on that will make us better, but the togetherness of the team, the unselfishness and the fact that they play hard was the main key. This team is a lot of fun to watch and I’m excited about the season.”

The 49ers scored an average of 106.7 points in the Canadian Tour.

Sounds like a lot of people willing and ready to score points. That’s my biggest concern coming into this season, but if this many people can score, then opposing teams are going to have a hard time focusing on one or two threats because then someone else will hopefully be able to step it up.

all these stats should be taken with a huge grain of salt

Accomplishments of Canadian trip

 1. Coaches were given an opportunity for some additional scrimmage time for their team against someone other than themselves.
 2. Team was given an opportunity for some intangible bonding.
 3. Team visited Niagara Falls

most def.

Barnett put up 3 solid performances: 7/4, 13/8, 12/11… do we have a surprise contributor or was he just getting over with his athleticism?

I don’t put a lot of faith in the overall stats, but he showed up all 3 games. I was expecting very little from his this year. Looks like we may have another player.

Barnett is not a surprise to me. He red-shirted his freshman year (which I think majority of freshman should do if possible), he learned the system, improved his skills, and got bigger. Playing time is the only question though, but the minutes he does get I think we will see great things and he will be a beast years to come.

Even though these numbers are ridiculous, they show that our team has scoring ability and can work together. We outperformed all the other teams up in that area by a pretty wide margin. Even Kansas didn’t score 120+ points in any of their Canada exhibitions. This has the potential to be one of the most exciting seasons in a long time.

all these stats should be considered proof of a Nat'l Championship this year.

Fixed.

This sums it up pretty well from Bobby:

Think about this team last year at this time. 8 new guys and the coaches and players had no idea what roles each would play. A year later with everyone back except Lee, they’ve already practiced for 10 days and had three exhibition games…and it’s only September 2nd.

This sums it up pretty well from Bobby:

"…Everybody got significant playing time. …

Church got shammed… but hey, free trip. Guess he can’t complain too much.

roster spot = team GPA booster

how come gaby wasent playing?

The main problems with our teams in the past have resulted from not doing what they are supposed to do. For example, losing games they should win. This team went up to Canada and did what they were supposed to do with no let downs. That is good enough for me. We shouldn’t look at any of the stats, because those will all change remarkably during the year when we play against real competition. We should look at the fact that we went up to Canada and kicked three teams’ asses that we were supposed to kick. Good job guys, let’s keep up the hard work.

Do Canadian colleges use the same 3-point line as the NCAA or is it the current international distance of 20 1/2 feet? I’ve tried to find an answer on the internet but nothing as of yet. Anyway, just wandering from what distance our guys were shooting from.
