I have had a lot of cars - but the M is my favorite. Absolutely the pinnacle of sports car engineering IMO.
Have a 1999 540i 6-speed manual with the “M” package (but not an “M”) - love it. It’s my toy car. Makes me an asshole on the road when I’m driving it. Goes through tires like they’re dirty socks that need to be changed daily, without even laying any rubber. Used to have dreams that I still had some of my old cars and wake up disappointed. I don’t wake up disappointed anymore.
Old cars have a soul. I can not be convinced otherwise.
My toaster does not have a soul - neither does a EV.
I have always wanted an older AMG hot rod or a M series.

Thats crazy considering how many fewer moving parts and complex systems EVs have. I expect the EVs to become much more reliable as time goes.
Part of the reliability problems is also new companies that are still trying to get their quality control in place.
Yes, the headline (as with most headlines) is a little misleading.
That’s because EV buyers are so hungry for their fantasy’s of a utopia, they are ripe for the taking.
Oh I can’t wait for all the failings to come with the Fantasy CypherTruck. Its going to be a gas!
Eventually the EVs will have way less maintenance. Just a matter of time and refinement. They will still have some of the same maintenance as ICEs - tires, brakes, AC, etc.
The interesting thing to watch is the long term usage once batteries need replacement, secondary market used market prices, software ownership and lock downs.
I don’t like EVs because I hate driving them. I can not deny that for most people they are absolutely the right thing to do.
All cars break. EV’s will break the same, and in different ways. Look into all the trouble they had building non production cyphertricks then imagine what’s going to happen when insurers have to pay for collision repairs. People act like the piece of shit is invincible. It’s fantasy
Of course they will still have maintenance needs and issues. The difference is they don’t have near the number of moving parts or systems. Just a far simpler machine. No transmission, no exhaust system, no fuel management, no filters, etc - once the kinks get worked out it will be a better bet with the one caveat of battery life and replacement being a simple but potentially very expensive maintenance item.
Electrics should have reduction gears. They wouldn’t go straight from motor to wheel even if it is a 4 motor car. Granted the reducer is typically less complicated than ICE. I would still think those reducers would have some sort of gear oil. To your point there are less moving parts. I am waiting to see the used market and battery replacements as well. I imagine battery replacements will also require a software upgrade to modify charging for the change in battery technology from x number of years earlier.
In essence, most electric cars use a single-speed transmission with a reduction gear mechanism, which helps to slow the high rpm — revolutions per minute — of the electric motor and match the rpm to the actual wheel rotation.
If you hear that an electric car has no transmission, it’s likely referring to a vehicle with reduction gearing, which essentially performs the same functions as a transmission.
Yeah the reduction gear is certainly far simpler than either the clutch system or todays modern automatics. I don’t even count that as a transmission.
I didn’t even mention cam chain and tensioners and guides and valves and lifters and air intake systems.
All the stuff I love about ICEs certainly makes them far more complex a machine and more to go wrong. Of course older ICEs also aren’t going to basically turn into a brick either, though inguess new modern ones could.
