it really shows how much we miss deluca. he is a great tackler and can play in space. i wonder if we can still redshirt him. i hope the staff lands a couple 3 star commits this week.
He has missed throws both games. He said he did not play well at Clemson. He made poor decisions in both games. You canāt blame anyone else for those. He needs to be better.
Well yāall are way more down than I am. We got beat in every phase but I donāt think we were that far off. We consistently put them in 3rd down and often time had tacklers in the right place but didnāt put them down with some poor tackling. We had some absolutely killer self inflicted penalties on both sides of the ball. We tackle and clean up flags itās a different game. Reynolds INT in the end zone was a killer for sure his second though I felt was just trying to make something happen at end of half, I donāt put that on him. Also anyone holding the Clemson game against Reynolds is crazy. Getting away from Benny was also a bad move as well and one Iām sure the staff will review.
As for attendance we did have more folks there than is being reported. The systems the AD uses are being reviewed and I know that for a fact. They are locked in with some contracts and I would expect to see some of these systems changing over the next few years.
Overall was a great tailgate, had a bunch of first time attendees come by and they had a blast and said they were buying tickets to the rest of this season. The heat wasnāt too bad on the top row, but Iām sure other seats were really hot. Hard to be upset with kick time though as late September isnāt expected to be so warm.
Letās regroup during the bye and take it to FIU!
Maybe we werenāt watching the same game. In the future, the ints canāt happen. But it had no bearing on this.
First INT - FAU 3 plays -17 yards, punt to 45 (1 minute time). 4 plays later we score and it was quick. (Will check play, 90% receiver got bumped/stopped running route.
Second pick, 20 seconds left. Absolutely stupid BUT, forced when down, Takes away what would have been at the time a 55 yard ATTEMPT. Maybe you knock it down 45. 3 points, maybe.
Actual problem: that defense isnāt stopping a thing. Itās hard to watch. I wish Spencer were still here. Having to play catch up against everyone is going to be the trend with this. Oline playing that way is going to also make it impossible.
Thereās a lot to figure out.
No one has blamed Clemson on Reynolds. I just said he stunk both games. Most players have. However, the game plans going forward will be to stack the box and make Charlotte throw the ball. If Reynolds plays like he has the last two games we are in trouble.
He made bad throws because he was either running for his life or had pressure in his face ALL DAY at Clemson.
Great post. Spot on.
Noā¦if the defense and o line play like they have the last 2 games, we are in troubleā¦I donāt think anyone has mentioned that FAU is just a bad matchup for our Defense. Our defense is still ok against a run first offense, but a strong passing team like FAU is bad. That then opens up the run game.
**obviously itās still early but looking at the trend we gave big plays at app Clemson @ Fau Two were the first play of the game one on the second. We had busted coverages at app at Clemson we had busted coverage s yesterday over and over again. We struggled getting lined up & ready But more concerning yesterday it looked like we had some guys quit in the second half. Like I said at the start itās early so looking to see what adjustments the coaches make You can have all the talent in the world but if you donāt have guys lined up & in the right position. Good luck. ? Who has the final say on the defense. West or cooper. **
Going into the season, we all said that depth would be an issue. On defense, we are without an all conference defensive end, an all conference safety, an all conference linebacker and another linebacker that possibly would have been on the all freshman team. Thatās alot. On offense, we are without two starting linemen, including a preseason Rimmington list center. And the lack of depth shows on special teams.
Itās going to take several recruiting classes to get the depth we need to be where we want to be as a program.
I was optimistic going into the game yesterday and am disappointed because a win would have vaulted us to where we want to be more quickly, but it is what it is. We are where we thought we would be at the beginning of the season. We still need to win the games that we should win and steal one more to get to a bowl. But the future is still bright!
This is as tough a realistic complete matchup personnel wise (Clemson doesnāt count) we will see all season.
Marshall might have the D and Unt has the O, but FAU is more the complete package.
FIU has a qb that can carve us up as well.
The actual mechanics of the loss sucked. Fundamentally poor defensive effort. Didnāt use the offense weapons we have properly⦠no positives at all.
The reason it sucks so badly we could have had all of the momentum on the field and more importantly in the city. This was a shot to demand the cityās attention⦠but now we are 2-3 with a moral victory on our resume. As Marlon Brando said- we coulda been a contenderā¦
Think I got my hopes up a little too high after the first few games. Myself I guess I had Hopeās that the change in coaching staff really was worth a few more wins this season. Yesterday just brought me back down to the reality that the previous staffs biggest failure was recruiting & we just donāt have the talented depth to go head to head with a lot of teams. Add in the injuries & the extreme heat yesterday & I think our guys were just worn down & over powered by about midway through the 3rd quarter. It did appear that some guys kind of quit later in the game but Iām going to try to believe that was due to being worn out from the heat. My biggest concern is with the defense. I can understand this defense giving up some of the bigger runs if we are playing basically 5 defensive backs but I donāt understand some of the wide open passes. It looks like weāre playing prevent defense at times and giving up 8 or more yards on almost every play. Guess we have to give the staff time to get the personnel they need for this defensive scheme but if we donāt have the personnel to play it this season at some point do they need to adjust to the personnel we have?
Got out over my skis a little bit thinking weād go on a nice run, but itās just one game. It was a poor effort, especially on the defensive side of the ball. It hurts to give up big plays early in the game and have to dig ourselves out of a holeā¦this is the third game where weāve given up a big run or pass on the first or second play from scrimmage. Itās so deflating.
On offense, FAU clearly had a gameplan to stack the box and force us to beat them throwing. Thatās what the tape says any D should do and we should expect a lot more teams to just sell out to stop benny at all costs. That falls on Reynolds to will us into some games, at least completing enough passes to keep defenses honest. He didnāt do that yesterday, and we paid for it.
Iām not ready to give up on this season yet. The effort we showed against App and UMass is in there somewhere, and if we can channel it a few more times, a 6-6 record is still attainable. FIU and UTEP are not good. Obviously this next game will tell us if we should stay invested or be ready for another disappointing season, but with a bye week to scheme and hopefully get a little rested up, I expect us to come out of the gate much better in Miami in two weeks. Still wanting to believe in this team, despite a stinker this week.
I donāt think Reynolds was as bad as a lot are saying. Given the pressure he was facing I thought he played decent. Not sure why we gave up on the run game so early. I agree we were outmatched - we were noticably slower all over the field yesterday. The injuries hurt us and if we canāt get healthy itāll be hard to see hitting 6 wins. I still have hope for the rest of the season, though. I thought FAU looked like they will compete for the conference title.
This image is from the student section in yesterdayās game. We have all been begging for the students to get more involved. Well this group (which is my daughterās group - she is on the far left - 3rd row) - have been out in force this season with the body paint and big time enthusiasm. How does Charlotte reward them? At the entrance they got their foam pick axes confiscated, their cow bells (ok understandable) confiscated, their flags confiscated. You will note a flag in this CHARLOTTE FOOTBALL promoted picture. This made it in because of the the students wore it as a cape. Soon after this picture was taken - they were told they could not display the flag like this. It was not āattachedā to the wall⦠they were just holding it like this. The Football team will use this āviolationā in their promotion - yet not allow the students to do it. Itās just counter to what we are trying to build.
And in another āwhat are we doingā category. We had tickets in section 110 yesterday right smack dab in the middle of OG season ticket owners. Never again. These people are nuts. (And if it is any of you - you need to self review yourself). In this āSquareā of about 4 rows, 6-7 seats deep, they all know each other. Apparently been coming to games since the first one. And they will LET YOU and everyone else around know it. 10000. Times. They use this fact to belittle those that ācome to one game a yearā. They will use this fact to as a reason to be rude to others. They will use this fact to order to be rude to each other.
Here is a story that was unbelievable. Early on in the game when we had the ball⦠the stands were quiet but for some reason the cheerleaders in front of us were cheering. I didnāt notice or care. However apparently this is the worse insult to the OG in our section. She literally stood up and began screaming at the top of her lungs āSHUT THE F*** UP CHEERLEADERS! YOU DONāT FUC****** CHEER WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL. CHEER 101!ā - She repeated this about 5 times. Everyone in the section was just quiet - in shock. It was just very very ODD.
A guy a few rows up there with his wife and two young daughters. One of the daughters was about 3 and decked all out in a Charlotte cheer outfit with paint on her face and all. Charlotte promotion picture cute. She was standing on the bench watching and enjoying the cheerleaders while this OG was screaming venom at them. The father had enough and came back to talk to the OG and explained he had young children and please watch her language. (later to find out from everyone else in my section that he was one of those that ācome to one game a yearā and thus have no right to complain) She told him to shut the F up as well that this was a game - people say bad words. That put him over the edge and thus he started to get the cops. Another OG friend talked him out of it and promised to calm her down. He want back to his seat.
The OG quit yelling at the cheerleaders but she kept and on and on talking loudly, so everyone could hear that bad words are a fact of life and this guy, that comes to one game a year, needs to use this to teach his kid a life lesson. She kept on and on, and friends in the section also chimed in.
Another guy in the section (also an OG) a row in front of her got fed up and turned to her and asked her to stop. He said please, just stop. She kept on talking back to him so he finally went and got the cops. The cop came and got her but she was soon back. The rest of the day (literally) was her making cracks to the guy loud enough so he could hear and the rest of the section urging her on, laughing, agreeing, and also adding their own comments so he could hear. He apparently he is an OG owner as well who owns several seats and used to have family come with him. And apparently has worn a kilt in the past, probably as a fan. But now since he was there this week by himself, he was the āloser who came by himself because his family left him and he wears a kiltā. She did not say this ONCE. She said it many times over the next 3 quarters. And the rest of the section allowed it and urged her own.
It was a sad sad display of Charlotte fans, alumni, and adults. I donāt own season tickets. (I own Panther tickets since 2010 and this does NOT happen there) But I come to most games. I will not buy in that section again. But I will come back. Others that may have come to their first game that was in my area - I would not be surprised at all if they never come back. Why would they?
I actually agree and have seen a lot of what you describe. we have a few garbage fans that think they run the roost because they spent a few saturdays on the ramblinā rose. Many of our fans are also football illiterate.
Please tell your daughter to keep at it. We need her and others like her in full force. Please try to get them to come to basketball. People used to be terrified of our student section. Near the end when things got salty with administration, Judy really neutered the student section. We really need to relax on that, and encourage the crazy. The whiteboard had been a tradition at Charlotte game for well over a decade, and they stopped allowing that! In reality, we havenāt done anything of athletic significance since these kids were born, and we need to do whatever possible to get them to show up.
Please keep at it, and weād love to have you back.
Edit: For the record, the people in front of my group Saturday moved, because we were loud on third downs.
clt says it was not great cape weather
Fan behavior at sporting events can either enhance or ruin the experience. People use foul language every day, but need to be respectful of others. My wife is from the Northeast where the F bomb is a commonly used word in general conversation. She respects people and does not use that word unless she is in a group that is ok with that type of language in conversation. My section is decent in 112. We sit around some people who have kids in the band and some new season ticket holders. We are new to that section, and so far it has been a mostly positive experience.
I have experience negative fan behavior at Panther games as well as Nascar events. You can give some people all of the money in the world, but how they handle themselves shows their true worth.
Iām in 111 and while I didnāt hear all the yelling I saw the cops come and take her out. Odd thing is I didnāt recognize her or her man and Iāve only missed one game.
I think I know the kilt guy. He always wore a solid tan or green one. We kilt guys kinda remember each other.
Either way tell your daughter to keep it up. Send what they had to deal with to Chris Fuller and maybe things will change.
One thing is as we climb the ladder we are gonna deal with more of this crap. New folks jumping on and older folks that have been around thinking they are better than someone else.
Hell I just want us to win and the city to jump on board. All of them.
