Yes and maybe. If the PAC can survive with only WSU and OSU, the ACC will survive because they’ll presumably have more than 2 schools to rebuild the conference.
I could see only Wake, BC, SMU and maybe Ga Tech being left behind if the ACC falls apart. Cal and Stanford will probably go back to the P12.
Yes, they will absolutely poach the aac, although o think only temple, Memphis, ECU, usf, and possibly us would be realistic targets. And we only will be if albin is a home run.
USF and Memphis will be locks. They may try to talk to UConn again but that ship has probably sailed especially if Pitt and Cause move to Big12
Tulane, USF, and Memphis will likely be the first to go. Would AAC backfill with Sunbelt teams or fully dissolve?
I forgot about Tulane. Based on the last few years, yes they’re a lock as well
Will be interesting to see what Duke does if all of this happens. I don’t see them making the B10 or SEC cut because of football. Although they have been better than UNC the last couple of years. Guess they could go B12 but I wonder if they would have the same academic concerns about that like Cal and Stanford did. Maybe Big East for basketball but not sure what they would do with football.
Tulane, GA Tech, BC, Duke, Wake, Syracuse, UConn…
Throw in USF as an AAU university and you can start to see a potentially workable conference, maybe with Temple too. Feel like I’m missing another AAU school.
Can always add the Service Academies too.
Rice is an AAU school.
I think Duke is a natural fit for the Big East if they deign to go down to FCS in football.
However I think Duke would be a very attractive add for the SEC or Big 10.
Why?
Because the strengthen hoops and can serve as cannon fodder in football.
The p2 needs conference cannon fodder to help teams get some wins so the alumni don’t get pissed off.
I don’t think any D1 conference is going to completely dissolve as long as they have an NCAA tourney autobid and share available to them.
If that goes away all hell will break loose.
At that point (when the ncaa tourney is no longer all D1) we are going to see a lot of changes I think.
Regionalization will be a must. Cost control will be a must.
If we are beneath the dividing line we will be in an all Carolina’s conference I would think.
FWIW, if Duke did land in the Big East - which would result in a tremendous financial hit for the Blue Devils - could do like UConn and be an FBS independent.
If I had to bet, I think that’s what they would do. The Big XII could make some sense with their basketball prowess but I don’t think they go that route.
Big East long term isn’t going to work for UConn, so just can’t see Duke going that route either.
When the P2 breaks off to do its thing, the ACC will take a hit. Don’t see the Big XII getting raided at all. Then probably some sort of rearrangement of remaining schools plus openings for the likes of UConn, Memphis, USF etc plus possible landing spots for P2 castoffs.
Five or so years down the road is going to be very interesting.
Anyway, my 2 cents.
What alternative do they have?
IMO it all comes down to what the P2 do. If they take off and leave the big12 and acc and the rest of behind then there won’t be a huge pot of money left for everyone else and I’m not sure the fiscal difference between the b12 and aac and acc and pac and sunbelt will be big enough to justify far flung leagues. Once the networks have all the brands they really want consolidated into the two major leagues then the rest of are expendable as far as they are concerned.
Not trying to be negative at this stage, but there is no way we should think or feel we can attract an opportunity to move up in any re-alignments.
We should probably think of moving sideways/down at best…… The moving has basically destroyed our anchor program mens bball and we have had no idea what we are doing in Football. Our current AD has fired and hired 3 HC’s now trying to make it work due to our record and lets face it the majority of games we cant even compete for four quarters with this level of competition.
I don’t think our next move will
Be up or back or sideways as much as I think it will Just be dictated by greater alignment across the board and what the new structure looks like.
clt says we aren’t investing in enhanced facilities to move down
We just need to do everything we can to win in basketball and football between now and 2030 to put ourselves in the best position for the changes that are probably coming. Tulane only had a couple of years of successful football and it got them in the P12 and some down the road ACC conversations. 3 to 5 years of success could put us in a good position.i know that’s easier said than done.
