Right after voting to increase the SBC’s exit fees? Are the fees only active starting on a certain date?
Why do they want to leave? I haven’t lurked over there in a long time but according to the Sunbelt board it is amazing.
My guess is it’s because of what almost everything else is for…money.
I’m not following it closely either but like the tweet says, most of what I’ve read suggests the entire SB east division wants out.
Could an existing FBS conference split and still remain in the CFP playoff group? Could a new FBS conference be created?
Certainly precedence for an FBS level conference splitting. Most recently is the WAC “divorce” that created the Mountain West and historically the SEC and ACC both the result of schools departing the SoCon.
If they’re leaving the only options are the Pac XII (most likley) and MWC. I would imagine both of those conferences would want enough teams to have an eastern wing if they make a move.
clt says marshal and liberty have no chance in the AC.
jmu had to show plans to get to R1
With conference championships games going away and with the conference membership numbers being so large to the point you don’t play many of the teams in your conference, what is the point if you are a powerhouse program? Being independent might be more beneficial.
Charlotte would still benefit from a conference for scheduling and media rights purposes but I’m not as sure for Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Miami and some others.

University of Miami is considering the independent route,
“If we have to go independent, I like our chances because we are a national brand,” Echevarria says. “I wouldn’t like to do that because scheduling [other sports] is really tough. It’s great for football but what about track, volleyball and the golf team?”
Miami president discusses moving to SEC, Big Ten or going independent - CBS Sports
I’m on the opposite side.
I don’t think anyone is going to benefit from being an independent like Notre Dame does.
That’s a very unique situation historically and they have unique appeal.
Miami for example I think is kidding itself if it thinks it will thrive as an independent.
These schools are crazy. They aren’t Notre Dame. And they also need to realize that Notre Dame has been a pain in the ass for a lot of people. They are not a very good partner for their TV outlets cause they struggle to get good games and they have some less than valuable traditional games they schedule like Navy.
I think the first team to do this will have some first mover advantage but that will wear out quick. I would be very interested to see if Miami can get P2 money if they went independent. I would bet not.
Independent would be tough sledding for Miami from a scheduling standpoint. With conferences increasing their conference games there just aren’t a lot of open slots for the P4 to fill.
There’s really no benefit at all being in a conference aside from the TV deal. Would Ohio St get more if they went independent? Texas? I would love if this blew up the P2
For it to work, you would need a number of bigger spending teams to go independent at once like Miami, USC, and a dozen others.
Miami was an independent for 64 years and won 3 national championships during that time frame. Could they repeat that, I have no idea. TBH, I think it’s just a negotiating tactic and they much rather prefer a P2 conference than go independent
I do t think it will work but I encourage any P4 team who thinks they can make it to go independent.
I root for Chaos in the P4.
Discussion around Miami going independent.
I used to like Steven Godfrey because his old podcast would talk a lot about G6 teams but now find him highly annoying.
