Covid and 2020-21 College sports

It seems like Mike Hill said our Athletic Dept had spent a million, or 3 million, dollars on Covid testing, protocols, PPEs, etc. I don’t remember the exact amount, but I can certainly see some FCS schools throwing the towel in and deciding that they cannot come up with that kind of money.

Hell how is App and ECU coming up with that money given their funding issues.

clt asks how many games were cancelled by appy and eCu?

Could all of the schools receive extra funding from the UNC System or is that not allowed for athletics?

Not allowed. No state funding for higher education or tuition charges is allowed to fund athletics or athletic facilities in NC.

It’s why ECU borrowing from physician’s fund to stay solvent was so suspect.

clt looked into this. eCu cancelled the first 3 games, and appy cancelled none.

seems like they were not testing, or at least not testing diligently.

Yet somehow NCSU and CHeat had arenas / stadiums built with state funding.

Two sets of rules.

Well the ESA isn’t an NC State building - totally different but still bull shit since partly state money built that but the city of Charlotte was denied state funds for our arena. Part of the reason o absolutely hate the Canes.

Chapel Hill has placed an academic room(s) in some of their places - I’m pretty sure Keenan expansion had a few classrooms so that it qualified for partial funding.

Didn’t we pay for half of the SAC with state funds because it’s the student activity center?

I’d have to go look I thought it was paid for with fees my generation paid.

clt says that academic room was never occupied.

Miami was already in Chapel Hill when the video surfaced. I’m sure Cheat will reimburse them their travel expenses

Don’t know if this was posted before, but it is an important read. It is a peer reviewed study on the CDC data reporting on Covid-19. Apparently, on March 24, 2020, without an opportunity for public comment prior to implementation, the CDC changed the way deaths must be reported by medical professionals. The previous reporting method was in place since 2003. Using the previous reporting method, the comorbidities are listed differently as well as Covid-19’s impact on death. Covid-19 deaths using the pre-March change would have only found that 6% of the listed Covid deaths were a direct result of Covid-19. The other 94% of deaths had an average of 2.6 comorbid conditions that contributed to
the death. As a result of that would government policy have been different regarding Covid. Could we better target high risk individuals for protection. The difference could be huge for colleges and businesses who are struggling due to the lack of patrons and the money lost resulting from government orders.

This is not an argument about is Covid real or not. Of course it is real. The question the study brings up is were deaths and infections being reported accurately such that the public and government could make the best decisions possible.

Seriously. Have you been involved directly with the Covid outbreak or even its testing in the last 12 months? I can’t today.

A friend from high school passed away. Numerous family members have had it. This is not a post about my feelings on Covid-19 nor was it meant as political. It is just a peer reviewed piece on data collectionand reporting. Just thought it was interesting.

The Ivy League just essentially canceled their baseball season for the 2nd year in a row. Brutal.
