This is a bit different on the issue, because in my experience with most academics they know the differnce between UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte, but I was at a conference 4-5 years ago in California and someone asked me what “Charlotte” meant. I looked at the person somewhat blankly, muttered “excuse me?” and this fellow responded by saying “I thought it was Charlottesville.”
Sorry about the bad link, that is supposed to go to the uspto’s registry for the UNC trademark, relevant portions are below:

Same thing happened to me at a conference while I was a student back in 2001. I was in DC for a conference talking to different folks. First they saw the UNC Charlotte on my nametag, and thought it was the Tarheels. When I corrected him and told him Charlotte, he thought I was talking about Charlottesville.
The same thing was done with football and is done continuously in any research.
This is more exploratory, not scientific.
Well then it really doesnt explore anything, being that the sample used is so obviously biased that it skews any findings horribly. I expect the anti name change crowd to be a lot more than 4 percent of the Charlotte family.
There will be an official poll on the spring election ballot, per the below lines of the name change resolution that was revised and passed again at last nights meeting:
II. Requests that a question be placed on the Spring 2008 election ballot asking students the following question: “Would you be in favor of changing the name of ‘The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’ to ‘The University of Charlotte?’,
III. Asserts that the results of this poll will be deemed the official student opinion on the prospect of changing the name of this institution,
The poll that is up now, I presume, was only placed there to get some preliminary polling information. This is actually the second time such a poll has been on the SGA site. The results of the first, which had nearly 1000 votes cast, is here: http://sga.uncc.edu/polls/namechange

Darren, is there an advocacy group that will campaign to get this passed with promotional materials, debate, on-line promo, a “position paper” that I have suggested in other posts, etc.? When are the Spring Elections? The on-line poll at about 60/40 is a little to close for comfort. Thanks for your efforts.
I think thats the one he’s talking about. Its more in line with what I would expect an accurate poll to represent. It would be a hell of a fight thats for sure. There would have to be some heavy grassroots movement to get the word out.

I have not heard of any groups that will be specifically dedicated to promoting this issue up until the election. The elections are March 25-26.
I would like to ask that one of you on this website set up a ‘Charlotte Football Initiative’-type group on campus, the sole purpose of which would be to promote changing the name of the school. CFI did amazing things with regards to football, and promoting the student poll, and I am sure that a strong, dedicated group could easily do the same for the name change.
I’m all in to help you get this group set up, but I will have less and less time to help as the elections come near. PM me if you’d like to get together next week and get this set up.
