Ebuka Izundu - 2015 C - requested release from LOI

Id disagree here. At this point the wheels are falling off at least as far as next year is concerned. No way he even has time to fill that many roster spots. Most of the best recruits are gone and we haven’t heard a spec of us targeting anyone. Maybe down the road we will get to rebuilding but this loss is a gut shot.

Now we’re back to another 5 years of wait and see if the staff pans out. :-[

But hey, at least the program isn’t broken…
The wheels were off next year regardless, a good coach will come in and make guys better. Most big men come in unpolished anyway, so it’s unlikely Izundu would’ve had a huge impact on the Niners in year 1.

This - reset button has been pushed. One guaranteed year of suckage, probably more now.
Unacceptable.
Was it unacceptable for UMass to release Eddie Basden when they parted ways with Bruiser Flint or was that different since we were on the benefiting end?

As always, it was different because we were on the benefitting end.

I appreciate your honesty.

Reading comprehension problem? I am talking about the idea that we have “one guaranteed year of suckage, probably more now”…you know, the quote that I replied to.

Ultimately, it all comes down to if we made the right coaching hire. I am not too worried that players are leaving. It tells me that the coach is preaching “something” that the last staff wasn’t. Hopefully, that “something” results in wins.

The only reason I care is I felt like the young core of Dorn, Woods, Braxton, and Izundu could have been really special with the right coach.

Now we’re starting over from scratch and are very likely looking at a terrible season ahead. That’ll only make recruiting more difficult for Price.

I was not surprised that Clayton and Thorne left. Thorne has opportunities to go somewhere with potential for next year. It will be interesting to see what happens with Clayton. Who will be interested in a 36% free throw shooter, a 50% lay up shooter and several bone head plays per game. I will acknowledge his rebounding.

It is more concerning that Price couldn’t convince Izundu and Woods to stay. I hope we learn why each of these guys decided to leave.

Oliver just got hired at UT, and a poster here whose son is involved with the program (Manager maybe? I can’t remember for sure) said he is 99.9% confident Izundu will end up at Tennessee with Oliver.

I was afraid that would happen as soon as I saw Oliver was going to Tennessee. I haven’t felt this way since we lost Beasley.

If that happens… coupled with the football recruit flips… I hope Tennessee gets hit with the worst NCAA AIDS ever.

This is typical of any coaching change. It sucks, but it’s what we signed up for when we fired Major.

Thanks. That makes sense with Izundu.

Hopefully, Price, Ferguson and the staff can bring in some recruits leaving other programs. We have plenty of playing time up for grabs.
I don’t think it is a great mystery. No matter what the NCAA rules are, I strongly suspect this has everything to do with the phones of people around them (or theirs) ringing off the hook from other schools vulturing our coaching change situation. Where they end up will say a lot about who was calling them.

Oh well, I wish him luck. At least we’ll have reason for sucking next year. As this last season showed, there is no guarantee we would have been any good next season if the coaching change didn’t occur. Better to suck while regrouping than to suck with good players and no coaching.

Oliver was close with E Vic Willie and Darion Clark too so maybe we can get Ebuka back when he transfers out.

Pretty much how I see it. Hence, why I’m not acting like the sky is falling.

Yup, pretty much nails it, people on this board get so tied up with how much talent we think is on the roster, and maybe the 15 years between 1995-2010 it was fair to think that way, as we saw with the coaching staff we just fired, talent won’t win you games alone, let’s see what kind of kids Price gets in here for next year and how he does with them. He’s not going to start the season with 5 guys…

Yup - And unfortunately at our level we might find solid talent but not talent so good that it can go win games without quality coaching. If losing some of the talent now for quality coaching is what this takes then so be it. It sucks but it has to be done. With that said I don’t think this is a 5 year build. I think Price and Judy know they need to win in a hurry. We hired the wrong guy in Major and then made this more painful by keeping him longer than we should. Sadly it just means a few more years of pain for us. I am still more bullish on Niner basketball than I have been in a decade.
