ECU/SJ filibuster

that was a disappointing turnout from a instate, large school, “peer institution” that likes to talk about how they are part of the Charlotte market on message boards from a conference affiliation standpoint.

I know they are a football first school, but that was pathetic. There weren’t 300 ECU fans there, and absolutely no organization of the few who came to really sit together or cheer.
They don’t care about basketball.
And that is why they are going to the Big East in football only, and why we are only a few years from eclipsing them in all sports.
I understand that - but it is pathetic that given their overall size and number of grads in this town that they didn’t have more people there. I mean law of averages seems to dictate they would have a few more then they did. Past that look at the crowd we bring to Greenville - how many and how vocal and then compare that to the no student turn out from them. Just sad…

And they shouldn’t. They are god awful at it, always have been, and always will be. Stilljonesing makes it seem like there are alot of people who care about ecu because he posts about them all the time on every board and won’t shut up. But, they have about 5 total real fans because their program is a joke.
That being said, I loved our effort last night. Guys played hard, though I didn’t think we played particularly well. I still am concernced about PH’s health, you could tell he was bothered by the injury. He was not all over the court like usual, played very measured, and you can see that by his not having a steal (when was the last time that happened?). Anyways, he still played well I just hope he continues to get healthy and back to normal.
ecu is awful. I think Bowden and Akeem Richmond are even worse as upperclassment than they were as freshman. Their big, big, talented freshman that we only wished we could have Guilmette was thoroughly and utterly bitch slapped by little old 6’7’’ Willie Clayton from tip to horn. He clearly was out of his league in this game.
The only pieces that ecu has that have any kind of talent seemed to be Kemp and Paul and they are seniors. I am glad that lebo is a recruiting god, because they are going to be even worse next year.

You guys better hope our guys stay cold another game because if they do get it going and shoot like they have thoughout their career we win easy the way we defend and crash the boards. I fully expect we will pack it in downlow with our size and dare you to beat us from the outside as well as making you beat us from the free throw line. We got plenty of depth downlow to hammer you anytime you get it in good scoring position around the basket. The only thing that keeps it close is if you get some little Rudy going off from 3 like Brisco last year or our guys stay cold.

This quote is fun.

This is so awesome. Where is this guy, I’d like to hear about how their bench had a higher PER, so they’re so much better than we are, blah blah.

I was surprised at this also. I looked around for the ECU fans but only saw a couple scattered in with niner fans that were obvioulsy friends. I would actually like to see a group together making some noise to make the game more
exciting. 2 years ago they had a pretty good group in the upper corner. There are plenty of ECU fans around, they
just don’t care about basketball.

IIRC ECU bussed in some fans for that game. The only way they could get fans was to pay for students to come. ECU grads don’t want to pay to see their team lose.

Dayton brings a bigger, better crowd every time they come to Halton. ECU basketball is weak, and their fans reflect it.

I guess it is official then, the Niners own Halton and Minges.

Love the quote by Lebo about our size putting them at a disadvantage. Didn’t StillJonesing say that we had no one that could match up with their bigs and that we would get pushed around.
ECU shot 44% FG despite 26% 3-pt. They have some quick ball-handlers who had some sucess driving the ball against us. Maybe they should do more drivin & dishin instead of jacking 3’s. I wouldn’t mind if our team didn’t shoot a 3 the rest of the season.
I was disappointed that we gave up 44% from the floor to them. I think PB already said it - despite some highlight reel defensive plays, on the whole, that wasn’t our best effort. And yes, they threw up some prayers (banked 3 for one), most of that % was gaffes by us - missed switches, gambling for steals, and to your point about us shooting 3’s - when we started jacking them near the end of the first half, they got several run outs for easy looks too.

I do think we need to shoot the shot, but only in the flow of the offense, and only a select few guys - e.g. Benny, Ingram, and Bras (though I prefer him to only shoot 1 or 2 to remind the defense to come out and guard him on the perimeter).

Some nice efforts last night, but we’re going to have to be more focused to beat Davidson.

I am glad that lebo is a recruiting god, because they are going to be even worse next year.
Sampson seemed like he might be ok. I didn’t think Kemp was all that impressive, he benefited greatly from the bs touch-fouls they started calling, and his defense was not good at all. Guilmette is a major project at best. I can’t wait to see the next video of him dunking on some 6 foot D-III players on here. Richmond, Bowden, and Paul were all gunners, taking some really ill-advised shots. ECU was dominated from beginning to end. The refs inconsistency and bizarre no-calls on our offensive end and some sloppy, lazy play when the Niners were cruising are the only things that kept this under 30.

Clayton just had a monster game, really ate up their post players again and again. Williams continues to excel at taking the ball to the hoop, but I thought he made some poor decisions against the press, got a little lax on D a few times (not fighting through screens), and is still pushing that 3 shot instead of shooting in rhythm. He’s still putting it all together, hope the coaches continue to help him along. Henry and Braswell played well as usual, though Henry did seem to pull back at times. I’m really hoping Mayfield turns it around. He had some nice play around the basket against their undersized sf’s, but he’s going to have to start hitting some jumpers at some point to keep decent teams honest.

Davidson is going to be interesting. They will probably use the same hacking strategy ECU did, but I doubt we get many calls on their court. Cohen’s biggest weakness is being foul-prone, but he won’t foul out there like he did in Halton last year. And their shooters are better than ECU’s, so we’ll need to cut down on the breakdowns on D. The Niners will need to play better, I think their best game so far this year, to win. It’ll be interesting to see if the team raises their game, like they seem to when they’ve gotten down so far this year.

What does it say to Lebo’s coaching ability when a guy like Jim Baron can get so much out of a young player in Akeem Richmond, but Lebo can get nothing out of him.

We looked pretty good tonight. Agree with some of the ticky tact fouls and the phantom goal-tending call. Overall we played to our strengths and stuck to the game plan. There were a few times we got to running on the fast breaks and just seemed to get too excited about maybe hitting a three, resulting in a miss and then an ECU fast break. We need to stay focused in those situations and not get too excited.

Why cant we hit a three? We are terrible at it. Benny hit one and I am starting to warm up to him on offense, but his defense is horrendous. He is too slow and is often out of position by the time he gets to the ball. T-Will needs to stop shooting threes period. He is shooting 7% from beyond the arc. No I did not forget a digit in front of that 7, and yes you can look it up right now. http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/north-carolina-charlotte/players My GF could do better than that. He needs to stick to driving and his mid range jumpers. Him shooting a three is almost as bad as him passing it out of bounds. Mayfield is not far behind at 15%. Also a good driver and mid range guy, but his threes are killing us. They each need to have a “Shoot till you miss” approach. One or two shots max, if neither go you just pull that shot down the rest of the night and drive.

Our rebounding and driving skills will be the bread and butter of this team all year. On that note I am glad we seemed to have worked on our FT’s from last year. (Although that Tx. St. game is killing our average this year). We will need to keep hitting those going forward to make teams pay if they decide to try the “Hack a Niner” strategy.

Certainly been impressed with Major’s defensive game plan to date. We have been able to bother our opponents and make them attempts shots that are outside their comfort zone, some times they will go in (ECU and NE banking deep threes) but you cant make them miss 100% of the time.

Overall VERY excited and thrilled about this team. I did not think we could beat Davidson earlier in the year and had it marked as a clear L on the schedule. Now I am on the fence and am much more optimistic. Hoping for a big win on Wednesday.

Can you point to a single play where Benkovic has been a defensive liability? All I see is him making plays on the defensive end.

Yeah Benny isn’t a lock down defender, but he has look good enough and has made a few defensive plays. He has had a few times where he is out of position, but that happens to everyone.

Also Mayfield’s shooting started slow last year too. I expect that will come around. I do agree though T-will needs to not shoot them. He can’t hit them and his shot looks awful.

I really disagree with the TWill doesn’t need to shoot them. If he doesn’t ever take them, defenders will sag off him completely. Then all those moves on the baseline are gone. He doesn’t need to take more than 2 a game, but not taking them at all puts us in a position where TWill is neutered because the defense KNOWS he wont shoot.

Benkovic and Ingram are the only two guys I want shooting them regularly, but I want Mayfield, TWill and Bras to take them as well. Bras because he will actually hit them and Mayfield and TWill to keep defense at least a little honest.

Willie Clayton - 14 points and 13 rebounds
Marshall Guilmette - 2 points and 0 rebounds

:)) :)) :))

GO NINERS!

Play where he fouled the ECU player shooting a three ball. He got there late and in trying to run fast enough to catch up fouled him on the arm pretty clearly. But that wasn’t the worst part. No. The worst part was that by the time he got there the ECU guy had already shot it, so not only did the three go in but they got an and one as well that the ECU guy also hit.

A four point play for ECU courtesy of Ivan “I swear my shoes are laced with lead” Benkovic.

I agree. Kind of like Dewhurst and Wilderness.

If I were the coach of an opposing squad I would let them shoot it and sag off each of them until they did. I know they can drive and they have each proven that ability time and again. However, at 7% and 15% letting them shoot threes would be one of the better defensive strategies I could employ. I would let them shoot threes all day until they proved they could hit them.

I’d love to get SJing’s response to this. Too bad we will never get one.

Congrats. You guys beat our ass last night and it was a pretty pathetic performance on the glass and downlow. I thought you gave us plenty of good outside looks , they just haven’t gone in the entire year and that’s starting to get concerning. We are a shooting team and if we aren’t shooting well we aren’t going to beat a lot of good teams especially that play the style you guys do, that’s pretty clear. I thought our gameplan on D really sucked last night too, didn’t even try a zone. We’d have been better of putting everyone in the paint and making you beat us from outside.

It’s still a long season and I would have said that win or lose. I’m not writing our team off yet. If we had hit a couple more FT’s like we normally do only hit about 32% of our 3’s, which is a pretty sorry percentage at that, and well below what these guys shot last year, we’d have been right there in it at the end despite the pathetic performance in the post. I just don’t see how we shoot 27% on the year for the entire year from 3.
