Edward Van Halen and all things guitar 🎸

If I remember correctly, EVH was a classically trained pianist. This would also add to his phasing and techniques. Obviously, Mom and Dad were huge influences.

Set your echo volume to 10, repeat to 1, delay to 200 ms and play along. EVH and Brian May had this kid. They could have stopped after 3

The man can play. I’m more an Albert King type listener but I try to enjoy all music.

Love “Blues Power” but understand that Albert was a little ornery. He played with a chip on his shoulder.

Wouldn’t let me listen to Nino.

One more person to add to the innovators is Terry Kath. Man he could play the guitar. Hendrix like him too.

They sound like twins. I still think the world of SRV, but after I saw this many years ago, I discovered that much of SRV was Albert King! Who strung Al’s guitar upside down?

I saw it too. That was a good show and you can see how much SRV looked up to King. Also was lucky enough to have 5th row front seat at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in the late 80’s for SRV. Opening act was Lonnie Mack. It was a good show.

I don’t recall seeing a Flying V bass before

That V bass is made by Dean Guitars, which also makes six strings for this guy:

My kids got me a new Casino guitar for Xmas. Enjoying it so far, but I have to get used to the hollow body again and it does sometimes give some feedback if I’m not careful. One of the 90s guitarists I like (Neil Halstead) plays one to this day, but he stuffs bubble wrap in the F holes. Definitely doesn’t give a rip how it looks:

If you look closely you can see the bubble wrap.

Of course, the first one I ever saw was John Lennon’s:

I’m not in the mood for anything too heavy around the holidays…instead, I like chill stuff like this at this time of year:

Power trio The Winery Dogs have a new album coming out in February and will be performing in both Charlotte and Asheville in April.

Does a good hollow body sound good on a couch? I have a semi hollow tele and it can feedback badly if cranked. It doesn’t have enough chamber to be loud unplugged, one of my favorite couch guitars is a French Canadian parlor guitar, but it’s much smaller than most hollow body electrics

Lennon was a genius, as was Paul

Ever see Junior Brown? Caught the last 20 minutes of him in Austin and he blew my mind. His granddaughter let us back stage to meet him.

While I await the C-USA outcomes in Birmingham and Denton, this from July:

Interesting that Brian May was #1. I love his playing.

On EVH, if you can’t learn tremolo pick like him, you will never sound like him picking fast otherwise. It is kind of spastic, but the technique is so clear and fast

Not so sure about the Brian May #1 pick. I really like early Queen up to Jazz. After that they went a little wonky other than Innuendo.

Did get a chance to watch Junior Brown on Austin City Limits one time. Very interesting style and really good picker.

I have been giving Guthrie Govan some listens lately. He is different but a really good player.

Tommy Emmanuel is amazing to watch

Been listening to Govan ever since he collaborated on a couple of albums with Steven Wilson. Always found it ironic that Wilson, who has made no secret of his disdain for shredding, hired the guy many consider to be the preeminent shredder!

Not really a metal shredder per se. More of a guitarist like Zappa with a little bit more technique. Lot of jazz leanings. Listen to Bad Astroid by The Aristocrats or his West Coast EP for a great sample. He can shred when the mood hits him though.

Love his stuff with Wilson. Of course, I love all of Wilson’s stuff solo, Porcupine Tree, and Bluefield.
