Elon post game

Grobe redshirted nearly every freshman. Lambert will likely be the same way. We’re only seeing freshman play out of necessity right now.

Just get used to it.
If I recall correctly, Wake lost some of the better recruits because of that philosophy.
They also won the ACC and went to the Orange Bowl with it

Why is it we can stomp the heck out of JCSU or Campbell and no one says a word, but the moment we lose to Elon, I get asked the same question by 10 people today. “What happened to your 49ers Saturday?!”

Because beating a team that doesn’t have scholarship players is not impressive. Also, Johnson looked like crap in that game too… against kids that weren’t even good enough to get a scholarship to play football.

Worst part of Elon loss? A big chunk of the loss was on the coaching staff. Redshirts aren’t going to help that.

You really don’t like Johnson do you?

He really is a great kid. Very high character, loves the program, and probably works harder than anyone on the field. He is definitely the kind of guy we want leading our team. Unfortunately, he just does not have the skill to run the type of offense we do. If he is starting next season and his passing does not improve (which it seems to have actually gotten worse), he will likely be the worst passing QB starting at the FBS level.

I’m sure he has the desire to improve. Not convinced he has the ability.
I agree that his skills don’t match up to our offense.

He would thrive in the triple option, but I understand not changing the offensive philosophy to meet the skills of a player who will only be here for a short period of time.

This. Great guy, bad quarterback.

When they got away from the redshirting they struggled as well and ultimately led in part to Grobe “resigning.” There are pro’s and con’s to redshirting but for a young program like ours I think it’s beneficial.

I kinda like the idea of Johnson moving over to H-back. He has the size and can run, and doesn’t shy away from impacts. The question is whether he can catch the ball. Maybe we can design some trick plays for him.

Matt has the arm to make all the throws. He has the work ethic and toughness to do it all. Unfortunately they are trying to force feed years of experience into a kid that doesn’t have it. He was a bulldozer in HS, not a pocket passer. He just doesn’t have the pedigree as a pocket passer. He does have the pedigree of being a football player though.

This.

As stated above, I understand not changing the system for a specific player… but that doesn’t mean you can’t shuffle in some option plays. Play to your strengths.

He’s shown an ability to make something out of nothing, and oddly enough seems to be a better passer when a broken play forces him to be mobile. Why not add some bootleg run/pass option type plays for him?

I think Matt Johnson has the skillset to be a fantastic QB, but only if the staff opens up the playbook a bit for him. Trying to make a pocket passer out of him is basically trying to take away the strongest portion of his game and force him into the weakest.

This is an interesting view… you kind of wonder why we recruited him in the first place… I mean it’s not like the guy was force fed to us that doesn’t have the skills to run the offensive coordinators game plan…

Mullens was here from the begninning and helped recruit him, why didn’t we go for more of a traditional passer if that’s what we are going to run?

I think we had 7 QBs in our first signing class. I bet they were all over the map in strenghs and style. Johnson just floated to the top in practices.

I think the message here is if you can’t sign top level talent year end and year out you are better off building more experience into the talent you do have.

No doubt. I actually agree with the general philosophy. Just wanted to point out that its not like Wake was going to the Orange Bowl every year using it.

That last play where he was past the line of scrimmage was a perfect example. He scrambled, rolled out to his right, and put the ball right on the money to the back shoulder. That was a great pass while on the run. We definitely need to use him for what he is, a mobile quarterback. Running more bootlegs would help tremendously.

Absolutely… It was a fantastic throw… Just top notch.

But his gut says run when things break down. Hard to untrain the mind when you’ve been so successful doing something. He’s an easy kid to root for, but I feel bad that it seems we are trying to hammer a square peg in a round hole… The frustrating part is that square peg would fit just fine in a square hole
