Its a message board and everyone talks trash, I get that.
But Please donāt dismiss another schoolās accomplishments (Davidson) compared to
us. It just makes our program looks even worse.
Iāve stated before and here again.
Charlotte, App and ECU should be on the same page regarding football.
We need to pool resources to lift all programs. It should be US against the
ACC, not US fighting each other. App vs Charlotte vs ECU games would be
a big event in North Carolina.
Amen. This App/Charlotte animosity is being driven by posters with too much time on their hands and who spend too much time on message boards (unlike me of course ;))
You say things like āThe others were first round exitsā as if we have anything other than that to latch to. They have more NCAA success than we have had since 77. Its depressing as hell but its true.
I just dont get the dismissiveness some have of Davidson. Iād give my left nut to have the past decade they have. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves.
Agreed
I think, as a general rule, others tend to undersell our basketball success and we tend to slightly oversell it. I think we have had a helluva lot of success, but I wouldnāt put us in the top-30 programs of all time. My frustration is when other people donāt want to put us in the top-100. Hopefully, football will raise the overall profile of the school and peopleās general awareness of our strong athletics department (soccer, golf, baseball, basketball, etc.) will also see an uptick.
Except for the blue bloods (and even they are not totally exempt), college basketball is a āwhat have you done for me latelyā game. Charlotte going to one Final Four in the 70s or like San Fran winning 2 national champs in the 50s are great accomplishments, but are absolutely irrelevant to everyone other than fans of those programs. The only way they become relevant is if you continually have that kind of success, such that those accomplishments become part of a lasting legacy.
Consider this thought: Louisville and comparable programsās court side video boards have a screen that reads something like (iām making these numbers up) ā6 final fours, 2 National Championships, 32 All Americans, etc etcā. Those final fours may have been from the 60s or 80s or whatever, but they matter because they elevate a program that has continually had success over decades. Do you think we could run a similar screen? We could, but that 1 FF would have nothing to bolster it.
Iām not trying to trash the program. We have had more success in a short period of time than many programs that have been around for a lot longer. We probably rank somewhere between 70-100 all time, depending on what criteria you want to use, but in the past 10 years we are no better than a lot of the programs we continually look down upon. We should never overlook any opponent, we should value every victory, learn from every defeat, and hope that we can build our program into a lasting legacy with deep tournament runs and production of NBA talent. But we simply have never been at that level and anyone who believes that is fooling themselves.
Playing App would be great for both team but we donāt need to force having a regional rival as conference play will provide plenty of opportunity (Marshall, ODU, MT, and WKU). The Observer really wants to force the issue.
If we hadnāt thought weād be playing a while in FCS would anyone care about playing App now? Think about it, App is a standard in FCS and also due to proximity its only natural the new kid would measure themselves against that kind of success at that level.
Had the Chancellor been able to say weāre fast tracking to FBS we would have found an FBS level team (probably ECU) to measure ourselves against and wouldnāt have thought twice about App.
Before we started football did playing App in any sport matter to us as a fanbase? Iād say not much to none at all.
Outside of both teamās online community, thereās zero animosity and zero real interest in a rivalry. The Observer wants storylines and App vs Charlotte would be one but this ārivalryā doesnāt interest the majority of the people that matter, fans and donors.
I donāt think we should play appy until we are sure we will beat them. Playing them and losing would only validate their insufferable claims that they an actual university that can compete at the highest level.
If the only positive in playing App is that we steal some of the pub the triangle schools get is it still worth it? If we all know that playing in Boone doesnt do squat for us and them playing in Charlotte can help their recruiting and fan base then we have to really think if the trade off is worth it. I am not even talking wins and losses - just publicity.
Thatās true as well, and sorta where I was leading to. We should only play them once they are safely in our shadow. Hopefully that will by 2018. I think the AAC is going to need more schools and we will have the size, market, and C-USA experience to be a good fit.
App, Charlotte and ECU could play each other every year and it would never take one damn piece of artificial publicity from Tobacco Road. What state do you guys live in?
Our goal should be this City and then the counties that touch it. If we achieve even becoming folks 2nd college team in that area then weāll be doing well.
I probably would have. Playing App every now and then would be a fun time. Similar schools with a close proximity. Many of us have friends/family that probably went there. Iād rather catch that game then some of the others on our schedule.
Appās relationship with FCS/FBS has little to do with it. Like most Americans, I dont give a shit about FCS and anything App did or didnt do while in the FCS means little. My interest in playing them is based primarily on the geography.

Iām fine with playing App every now and then, but I donāt think itās a good rivalry for us. Weāve never been in a conference together, weāve never played each other regularly, weāve not even similar schools with similar missions. We need to focus on Marshall, ODU and UAB.

let alone everywhere. For god sake, 10,000 UNCc fans have never been seen before.
Shall we compare spring games?
They have a thread on their board explaining why our Spring Game attendance is just a 1 year fluke. They have all the answers.
What is the draw of even going over there and engaging them? Aside from the fact that their board looks like shit, what reasonable conversation has ever happened there that involves our team?

Ask NWA and ImFromClayton. I donāt engage, I just know theyāll be a Charlotte thread there anytime thereās an Observer article about us.

Some of them are pretty solid guys. I donāt dignify Gonzo with responses. I donāt mind visiting there from time to time.

Its kind of like going to the zoo. Some folks like to see the animals and others canāt stand to go see them in cages.
