Fire Ron Sanchez

Maybe for an assistant, but not nearly as much of a sure thing as hiring someone who had actually been a HC before. Assistant Coach hires are not ever sure things as a HC.

I put very little stock into coach speak. I think some of you overrate what our coaches put out to the media. I would be surprised if coach Sanchez isnt more expressive to the team when the cameras arent on.

I also don’t buy the notion that we are doing significantly less with what we have talentwise. I think we are pretty middle of the road with our talent and also CUSA is much better this year than in any year since we rejoined.

I also think Sanchez has done a better job rebuilding where we are today from where Price had left our program. At the same time, I dont think he is much better, if at all, than Major. He is probably a better coach but worse recruiter and overall a wash.

All that said, I’m ready to move on from Sanchez. He’s had long enough to bake in as a head coach and deliver better results than what we’re seeing.

Definitely the best Conference USA has been since we rejoined and overall in a decade. Top ten league per NET just behind #9 AAC.

Not sure if he reads this board. A lot of what is said here is also on Facebook and Twitter, which he does post.

Hill should not get any stick about the Sanchez hire.

It was a great hire at the time and universally praised.

It just didn’t work out.

The extension was questionable. But the hire was not.

Never a sure thing in hiring - in anything.

agree, sorry I have a sick sarcastic sense of humor.

Terrific hire. Hill is to be commended. Participant trophy for Hill. There. That should make everyone feel better about how terrific a hire Sanchez was. I mean it was spot on. There was nobody that was available at the time for us better than Sanchez. He was the best coach for us and it just didn’t work out for anyone but Sanchez and Hill. Great job Mike Hill. And thank you Ron Sanchez for being better than Price, and for giving us all these exciting years of process. I mean we are now about the process too, so thank you Mr. Sanchez for helping us to appreciate the process over winning. Thank you very little

Coaches are like referees. Ever meet one that didn’t take up for their fellow coach or ref???

No, but guys that have been a HC and won before atleast have experience and have shown they can do it…unlike an AC, no matter where they worked, they have never done it themselves.

Remember…
Its not so much about wins and loses
And we should be happy when one of our stars transfers out for better opportunities!

Most ADs would have made the hire. That’s the point. It wasn’t a reach it wasn’t a blind guess it wasn’t based on being friends. Of all the people we’ve hired in basketball since Jeff it was probably one of the strongest hires we’ve made. Basketball analysts and commentators praised the hire.

I’ve hired lots of people. Some worked out some didn’t. Some look like sure fire hits and washed out. It happens.

Now that it hasn’t worked it’s time to move on.

That’s true but it’s also true when you elevate a lower level HC (will Healy) you have no idea if they can handle the step up in competition vs a AHC that while not the head man is coaching in that environment (Biff, Lambert). If you hire a an older experienced former HC you don’t know if he’s bringing the same energy, lost his touch, or his connection with the players and his contacts.

All I know is we have tried multiple basketball coaching profiles over the last decade plus and none of them have worked out.

Down bench assistant- fail
Respected basketball name assistant interim- fail
NBA Legend- fail
Former HC interim- fail
AHC off #1 in nation- fail

At this point I’ll take some guy that won a state title in middle school basketball if it helps us win.

One thing we did not try…

Bring back the head coach that had been successful here before. Previous head coaching experience; at this university. An alum that loves this school.

Most head coaches have a few down years along the way. It happens.

We tried every thing but the sure thing. Most have strong opinions rgarding this but I can assure you, Charlotte basketball would have been far superior, and a hell of a lot more fun, with the one thing we did not try…sad.

Most also praised the Price hire

This is a fresh opinion I haven’t heard before.

One thing to keep in mind, we are located in probably the only state in the country that has 5 schools that have all been to the final 4 and a 6th one in SC, that’s closer to us than the other 4 and 3 of those schools have multiple Nattys. We’re in the heart of ACC country and boardered by the SEC, which raids NC of talent too in both basketball & football. It does make it hard to recruit the talent we need locally because we’ll probably never be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th option in our home town or state, and a lot of times not even that close. We’ve lost kids to the other ACC schools, SC & TN and ones that didn’t want to stay locally. It means the staff has to find some way to overcome those built in obstacles to bring in the talent we need to at least compete within our own conference. I had hoped with Fearne, we’d be able to pull in more international players (We’ve gotten some) that don’t have that ACC fixation. We’ve had plenty of evidence just how hard it it to recruit and build a program here, except for the time we were in one of the top 3 or 4 Bball conferences in the country. I believe that Ron’s a good coach. We’ve been in all but one game this year and when was the last time we could say that, even going back to our final 4 year. Yes the style of play keeps games close, but the team plays hard. I’ve seen posts on here saying we’re a better team without JY, but I can’t help but wonder if we would score the 3, 4, 5 or 6 points a game more if we didn’t have a potential 1st or 2nd team Big10 player still here. Yes ultimately it comes down to wins and losses and it’s up to the staff to bring in the players we need from somewhere. And yes, when you’re a new staff trying to build a program back up from scratch, Covid did have more of an impact on that process than it did for most more established programs with the inability to recruit locally, regionally and internationally for a couple of years. (AND NOW IT’S BITING US AGAIN!) It’s hard sometimes being a Niner fan, but that’s what most of us on here are, so suck it up and cheer for the teams, bemoan the losses, cherish the victories and keep hoping that we’ll have more victories than losses. If not, then at some point we’ll rinse & repeat and start all over again. Go Niner’s!

Price got two seasons and eight games. Sanchez will get at least five full seasons. We aren’t any better off now than we were under Price with virtually no chance at post season play. I find it almost impossible for the system Sanchez runs to win four consecutive games in a conference tournament. You are never going to run into four cold shooting teams in a conference tournament. The only way we are winning now is playing inferior talented teams or catching a team on an off night.
