CUSA as a league is significantly better than it was last year. A lot on here have continued expectations that we should be what we were in the late 70s and the run we had in 2000s. The reality is we are so far removed from it.
Like it or notā¦a 20 win season in a league that is 9 or 10th best in D1 with a NET around 100 is significantly better than weāve performed as a program over the last 10-15 years. We arent a program who should be firing coaches after the season we are now having. We are what weāve been the last 15 or so years. Not what we were 20-25 years ago. No one playing college ball now or getting recruited knows us as the program a lot on here think we should hold ourselves being.
Iām not sure Ron will get us back to the tourney. Iām not 100% sold on him. But he has done a decent job with improving our program from a pretty bad starting point when he took over. I do not think deserves to be fired as long as we win one of our last two games of the regular season. Where it gets tricky is if we lose these last two games and/or cant get at least one win in the CUSA tourney coming up.
I am not going to get into a back in forth. Anyone can pad wins with: choppin state, not MD, just the eastern shore of it, Presbyterian, monmouth etcā¦, but we lost 1 to the team we are supposed to help pad, det mercy. Nothing against you, but you must be young, you have never witnessed Halton packed and on national TV playing and beating #3 Cinn and others.
my main question is, Donāt you want more? This is acceptable to you? I for one think we can and should do more. We used to have the talent etc⦠to compete. We fired a coach that was 218-158, got us ranked, NCAA tourny bids, conf titles, etc⦠We wanted more
In full transparency, I didnāt want WH fired. I thought it was a young program and needed to build, I was wrong, but basket had a rich history here of high-level success.
Like Sanchez or not; firing him after our Universityās best season in 15 years could make some quality coaching prospects think twice about wanting our job.
Dude Elvisā¦ā¦who are you talking to? Yes we used to be a different program. 20 years ago. Stop living in the past. We havenāt been good for 2 decades. We are a forgotten program nationally. People on here have an inflated ideal of what we are. We are on the bottom rung. We are having a momentum rising end of year push and maybe are finally building something after 20 years of misery. Enjoy this. Itās not where ANY of us WANT to be. But itās a step in the right direction. If you have followed the program as I have watching every game for the last 18 years then youād have to agree this has been a fun year compared to those 18. From the Davidson buzzer beater. To the early season tourney. To having a massive comeback to beat app st. Yes we had a bad conf start. The point is we are finishing HOT. Thatās what you want. GO NINERS!!
all very good and relevant points. I just have one question, I wish I knew how to do a poll,
in the next 3 years are you more excited and think will have better overall success in:
Football
or
Basketball
(remember the ānewā football hasnāt even stepped on the field)
If someone hires Ron away I can guarantee you I will not be bitching. I would consider a strong finish & Ron getting another job to be the best thing to happen to Niner basketball in the last 15 years. Itās not going to happen but I think that would be the absolute best case scenario for this program.
Everything about Ron is irritating. His rotations (especially his insistence on giving JT 32 min per game)ā¦his thankfulnessā¦his pillarsā¦his terrible systemā¦his lack of adjustmentsā¦his defensive philosophy that isnāt even effectiveā¦his schedulingā¦his complete and total insistence that wins and losses do not matter (itās about being thankfulā¦the journeyā¦to be the best version of ourselves).
But I do hope he gets hotā¦I hope Aly and Brice freaking go off down the stretch and we pull off a miraculous finish (against the scrub ass teams in this conference) and win the CUSA Tourney and get into the Big Dance for the first time since Bobby.
That kind of buzz could get some dumbass to hire him away.
Iām ALL for thatā¦and pulling hard for it to happen.
Playing in cusa itās hard to make NCAA the bar. I know that sucks to hear, but itās reality. You can have a great season and miss it. Happens in one bid leagues often. Now we will have to see what new look AAC looks like.
When we were in a league where at large was a common occurrence metro., cusa 1.0 and a10 making the tournament was the bar. Now I think we have to focus on conference finish to judge the season. That isnāt me moving the bar itās me being realistic.
Next season. We should see a tougher sos both out of conf and in. Maybe we can once again make the tournament the bar.
If his defense is ineffective as you say, why have we been holding our opponents to way below their scoring averages? Teams donāt like to play against our D, especially after he started to mix the lineup up with Folkes starting and Patterson leading the next wave. I know you will say it is because of our slower offense, but if you have watched this year our offense is so much better and fluid especially over the last month.
We may not win out and make the NCAA but you have to admit this team is playing better than any of his, or Pricesās have played.
I donāt know if he will make it long term, but dude just enjoy the ride, come to games and cheer this hard working, good group of kids on.
Hate doesnāt look good on anybodyā¦ā¦ oh except I do despise the TarHoles.
The ānewā AAC will likely be a one bid league most years. When a league has the #1 team in the NET yet is only ranked #9 overall - just ahead of #10 C-USA - and is going to lose that top ranked team to the top ranked conference, then multi bid seasons will probably be the exception.
We have played great defense the past two games, but if you think points per game is a sign of great defense, you need to look into other stats. Points per possession and opponent effective field goal percentage. Last year, we were terrible. This year we are middle of the road defensively.
That said, Ron righted that ship these past two games. Letās see how it goes. I hope we just keep winning.
We all know Ron is NEVER getting hired away. Heās put together a nice late season winning streak and deserves credit. If he comes back, it had better be on his current deal.
Nice late season run it might be, but letās see where he takes it, like the ambulance man says. Boise State was a nice early win, but they are not a ranked team. They followed that win by getting beat by a weak UMASS team. North Texas has had a good year, and itās a meaningful win like Boise State, but itās a difficult game on a powder puff schedule. I never heard of a Detroit Mercy.
Itās astonishing how defeated our fans are that they believe Ron has arrived because of this season. Halton is 30% filled a guys are posting pictures of the lines outside like itās a huge crowd. I think I give you credit for showing up and watching losing basketball for so many years, but I am not wired that way. Those 70% are NOT coming to Halton because of the basketball product, and right now that is the responsibility of Sanchez and Hill.
I can handle losing if we are competitive in meaningful games and our arrow is pointing up.
Implying this thread should be closed right now because of this season? Well I am afraid I have got some bad news for you,
