Fire Ron Sanchez

We weren’t the fastest growing campus in NC for years for no reason. I agree the assholes in Chapel Hill want us to toe the line and obey. Getting a medical school will be like when CLT airport expanded. City exploded and so will Charlotte when (not if) that occurs. '79, '84 Geography.

Great comments dorm. Could not agree more. Med school would be a huge catalyst for us.

UNC Board aggressively objected to us starting a med school. Told our leadership to “stand down.” It was career threatening.

Everyone has seen first hand the resistance to us starting football. I’m surprised wer were “allowed” to join the AAC. I give Hill the credit. I also recognize that Chancellor Gabber was extremely instrumental. No way this would have happened with Dubuois and Judy.

It gives every appearance our leadership is fighting. This keeps me energized.

I’m suspicious regarding our expansion plans. Is the UNC Board holding us back?

Look at our new hotel and convention center. The UNC Board and the president in particular opposed us. “They wanted us to stay in our swim lane.”

All of us on this forum have to be more vocal regarding these issues.

We need local city support, State government support, general public, and local business. Most importantly, we have to have university leadership willing to oppose the resistance.

The UNC BoG actually change the rules after we opened the hotel. That’s how much we went against their wishes. Kind of amazed Phil pushed it that hard.

Can you explain? What rule changed? That you can have a hotel on campus?

I love the idea of us fighting for what we deserve and want to be. It’s our identity, and I always identified with it myself.

That’s Niner Pride to me.

We financed the hotel through the schools foundation. The rules were changed to not allow campus construction through the foundation arm of a UNC campus school.

Got you beat by a year. 80’. Those were the true “glory days”! I will concede that Mullins did some fine work and Lutz was good for quite a few years. Always baffled as to how Major took Lutz’s 19-10 team and flipped them to 10-19 with virtually the same players. Oh yeah, didn’t he get rid of our top scorer? Let’s quit getting crappy assistants and bring in a successful coach who has been a head coach. Didn’t CofC hire for a while.Bobby Crimmons? If they can pull that off we certainly should be able to.

I’m not going to lie. I was not a big fan of the sanchez hire when it happened. I didn’t care what anyone said at the time about him being the number one assistant in the country at the time. I thought Virginia’s system was awful and a gimmick. and the fact that they had a consistent track record of being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs every year was worrisome to me. I was much more interested at the time in either picking up a proven head coach like retread from a P5 program, or an up and comer from a smaller school. If we had to go get an assistant I would have much preferred one from a program like villanova or gonzaga.

Anyway at this point I don’t know what to do about fixing the basketball program. I was thinking about maybe giving sanchez another year to fix it because I didn’t want to be like florida firing coaches after every three years because it likely prevents us from building a culture here. But then some people already pointed out that sanchez has already been here for 4 years already. At this point the only thing I can do is hope that Hill knows what to do. If he wants to give sanchez another year then fine. But if he wants to fire the guy then please go get a proven head coach that has a proven track record of building up programs. Then I can at least feel more comfortable in a long culture rebuild if it comes to that.

I hesitate to even type this, but it should be clear, without my comment, that NC higher education is becoming highly politicized. There is an abundance of articles and news releases that document the conservative drift of the Board of Governors. Charlotte, a bastion of liberalism of course, will not fare well in that drift!
That’s also what is on the table.

I’m not trying to take a political position here; I’m just calling attention to facts and their consequences.

In response to the above from NinerWupAss, we cannot use our foundation money to pay for campus construction. However, look at NC State that I also follow, and see where the NC government pays for their stadiums and arena on the back of the tax payers. Sure, it’s shared with other venues but it was paid for or subsidized by the government.

Of course they changed the rules. We found a way to move the checker forward without having to beg the system for funding. Does this even make sense that they would shut down this option? If true, isn’t it obvious they want to control our growth?

UVA postseason under Bennett:

2010 - none

2011 - none

2012 - Round of 64

2013 - NIT quarterfinals

2014 - Sweet 16

2015 - Round of 32

2016 - Elite 8

2017 - Round of 32

2018 - Round of 64

• Sanchez hired by Charlotte

2019 - National Champs

2020 - NCAAT cancelled

2021 - Round of 64

We shoulda hired Bennett

clt says the Charlotte region has a population similar to the state of Kansas.

Would be the 36th largest state.

At this point - the program MUST stop picking first time head coaches for THIS JOB.
Major - failure
Price - failure
Sanchez - 99.99999% chance he’s a failure

Get someone - anyone - that has had success in navigating a program at the mid-major/P5 level to multiple NCAA Tournaments and actually won games in said tournament. Picking first time head coaches just isn’t going to work at this point.

I agree but nothing is a sure thing. Hal Wissel was huge success at DII Florida Southern.

Hate to say it but the safest bet is still Bobby Lutz. He meets all those requirements and he did it here. He could also be engaged in building a transition plan upon his departure similar to Mullins handoff to Watkins and then a transition to Lutz. It would be great timing alongside the move to the AAC.

Or, we could take another chance and HOPE for the best. How’s that worked out so far?

Hiring Bobby is not the safest bet. Far from it. Who knows what assistants he could scrounge up with what recruiting ties. The safest bet is a d1 HC now that is having success now.

Name them. We have to be able to hire them and pull them away. Others are looking for the same.

Again, it would also provide us with an electric atmosphere and return hope to our program…assuming we let Bobby coach.

I show you Lutz and you present?

Sometimes it not (what you want to do) but (what you CAN do).
