Fire Ron Sanchez

Let me put this in perspective. I’m probably the oldest Niner on here. (81) I was at the NIT in MSG and the Final Four in Atl. I helped recruit for Bill Foster, Lee Rose, Melvin. Cedric, Melvin and Phil Scott came several times to the hospital to visit my youngest son when he busted up his leg. I’m WAY to old to ā€œboastā€ about this, but I’m too young to forget that we have a storied past of great people and great athletes that brought us here.

I’d like to see us get back on a road to that before I leave.

Nope, class of ā€˜75.

Or are you 81 years old? I step back!

Class of '73 here. Almost 71 years old. Yes I hear your voice echoing an historic NINER past. It’s distant past now, but I’m glad to say I too have been in attendance for 99.9 of the best wins ever. I lost a lot of hope during the wissell years. But when we went to the Dance three years in a row I naively thought we’d always be there or very close. It’s been a rough time since. Currently I don’t see us coming even close to being really good again in the years I have left. I hope you younger NINERS get to experience good times again some day. It was a supreme high only a fanatic like me can understand and appreciate.

"What I’ve done, I felt like I’ve won the Indianapolis 500 with a Honda Accord. And then they tell me: Do it again.ā€

Awesome quote.

Well I am glad to see that there are more old farts on here than I thought but I may be the oldest at 82 graduated in '70 but actually played basketball for the Charlotte College Owls in '57-'59. Went back later to get my degree.

I’m 59, started following the Niners during their 76 NIT run while I was in 7th grade. My dad called me in during a game and said check out this other team from North Carolina. They seemed like magic to me at that time. I went to Charlotte during Wissell years and came back to earth. I’d love to see some more Rose / Lutz type years!!

I’m 30 and have been around just long enough for the fall of the empire apparently. It’s always very interesting to read the perspectives from the glory days though as my first season was Lutz’s last. If it’s even an upside (it’s not), I usually can find a silver lining in a .500 season especially after the 6-23 BB years and 1-11 FB. I’m excited to be mad about it and finally give some shit to my App friends.

These last few posts have been great. I am so proud that we have loyal alumni like this.

Ron is bringing us together :flushed:

I’m 27 and was 11 years old when we blew that lead against state in 2005 NCAA. I can barely remember that, but my diehard love for Niner Basketball started in 2007. Had some big wins that year against right Wake, Davidson, etc…

Unfortunately, I missed most of the glory years. High School was tough because I would announce that my favorite college basketball team was Charlotte (Parents were 85 and 87 grads) and most people would laugh. Till this day it’s why Chapel Hill could burn down as a city and I would enjoy every second of it.

Went to school at Charlotte from 2012-2016 and became a basketball manager. Best years ever…… just wish we could have danced at least once… now I sit here wondering why I constantly put myself through the pain of Niner basketball lol.

I hope Mike Hill reads these posts and understands how most of us feel. This is one of the longest down periods this basketball program has ever seen. If things don’t get better this season it’s time to fix it.

Love the comments on here. A lot of us still have the taste of success in our mouth. We are still loyal and committed. That’s awesome!

We are moving to the AAC which could prove to be a game changer. Let’s keep the optimism.

My concern is we need to give the next generation a tasteful bite. My kids have grown up without it but still remain distantly connected, due primarily to me and my passion. We owe them and us since we have continued to survive our drought.

Until the wins come, the AD needs to stimulate our excitement.

  • stadium expansion
  • updates on move to AAC
  • continue to promote our new logo
  • get some decent merchandise on the shelves
  • improved tailgating
  • better align with the city of Charlotte to draw in new fans
  • this list can be expanded

Let’s attempt to realize our potential! The time is now. Let’s go Niners!

I was curious and looked up the Fire Major thread. It only got to 1,160 posts.

There may be other threads I should put in the Major bucket too though.

I’d take Major in a heartbeat over Sanchez. They didn’t win big like I thought they should have but they had talent and we’re fun to watch. We had 4 guys with ACC talent, pretty rare for us to be honest

Dear Lord no. They had the talent and did nothing. I dont want Major. I dont want Sanchez. Lol

I keep having some suspicion there is behind the curtain conversations taking place with the UNC system asking us to ā€œplay our role.ā€

I know for a fact they prevented us from adding a medical school and law school. They tried their best to prevent us from getting football. BY far, we have the most upside potential in the UNC system.

The difference is Major took over solid team and program under the direction that we haven’t been to NCAAs in 5 years and that isn’t acceptable. He sucked. Goal posts moved to NIT. He gets canned and we bring in Price. He doesnt take over a solid program he takes over a floundering one. Goal posts moved to just being decent. He gets canned and then Ron takes over a program in the dumpster. The two best coaches weve likely had in this timespan is the interim guys Odom and Fancher. I Have no idea where the goal posts are now.

I will say this much. I never felt like Judy cared about actually winning. Every time I talked to her winning came up last. Mike on the other hand every time I talk to him he brings up winning. I know he cares about it and prioritizes it. The question now is if it isn’t happening what will he do about it.
